I work for a major oil company and all indications are that oil prices will pick back up and demand during the summer is set to hit a record after being locked down. Will demand for our guzzlers evaporate? I take no sides because it won’t be good for anyone. Just interested in the opinions as mine should be considered one too.

Look at the last time this happened. Not just a blip but a sustained high gas price. Land barges take a huge hit during high gas prices (eg. $4.00 average across U.S.). The Tundra may an aberration, but the I recall the v8 pigs from the big 3 taking a large hit in demand.

No one wants to see high gas prices but if a few bucks a gallon is gonna make or break it for someone they got bigger problems to worry about.

If you put 1000 miles a month you’re talking about an extra $60 give or take per $1 increase. Just fill up at 3/4 of a tank. You’ll always have a relatively full tank and it doesn’t sting as much. Haha.

Doubtful only because the 2022 is coming out this fall with a smaller efficient engine. I think the 5.7 will be less desirable as it’s the least fuel efficient half ton in its class by far as gas prices rise. Why fill up for $80 per week if I don’t have to and can spend half that and go further?

The people hurt most by higher fuel prices are the ones who can't afford to replace whatever vehicle they are driving. Over time, as we get accustomed to hybrids or full electric, or whatever the future technology is that replaces larger gasoline engines, the market for used vehicles will exist for people who either can't buy a newer vehicle or simply refuse to switch to the new technology.

That's what I always think, I've been with people on roadtrips where they bitch about missing a gas station that's 5cents cheaper. At full tank that's a single dollar difference, and obviously we're talking more but it's a few dollars at the pump ultimately regardless how high it climbs. I'm all for cheap gas, but in the grand scheme of things gas is a small part of my budget, and I average 20k miles a year which I think is above average. Hell, three mortgage payments costs the same as a years worth of gas :D

I don’t think so. We’re all used to driving a beast and have accepted that the 5.7 doesn’t get great mileage. How much more does it really cost per tank? Per month? Per year?

The question you SHOULD be asking is, "Will it be LEGAL to drive Tundras in coming years?"

You probably think I'm joking ...

Unfortunately you’re right. With the current state of things trucks like current tundras will have a huge target on its back.

I think it will be legal, but heavily taxed. Although, it has been interesting to watch how EV's are now taxed higher in some states when registering, because of the "lost" revenue from gas fill-ups.

There’s always the “chicken Littles” running around saying “the sky is falling” and do the knee jerk reaction. These people sell their gas guzzler for pennies on the dollar, then get something they hate but fuel efficient, drive it for a few months, gas drops and then they are back looking at trucks again...repeat cycle.

I agree with the both of you however I think it’s going to be a lot more than a few bucks. Many places have seen a rise of over a dollar in a few months. It’s going to get much worse before it gets better and I would not be surprised if gas per gallon doubles or triples from what it was at the low...

I’m not going to say either way, but I know the US production is ramping up. This in turn will force a price war since OPEC wants to be dominant in the market. It won’t be a couple months for sure...more like 14-18 months.

    (I own wells in ND...FYI)

Gotta burn coal to make electricity or mine lithium to make batteries. How the fuck is electric any greener than gas?

The greenest car anyone can buy is a used one since it's already sunk cost for production. Any new car is net negative whether its electric, gas, hamster powered or fart powered. Doesn't matter.

High gas prices hurt SUVs more than trucks, because trucks have actual utility value past just basic transportation. People need them for work trucks so there's always at least *some* demand for them. That being said the tundra resale would be affected but who knows how much

Just depends on the individual. I used to have a job where I would commute 1000 miles a week. You think a few cents here and there isn't much but $1 per gallon increase adds up quickly. And I live in California so I'm used to historical high cost of fuel.

Coal is outdated and out of time. If anything at least say you need to burn nat gas to make electricity. Nat gas is readily available and way more cost effective to produce than coal.

Lmao not coal....at least not the majority of it. Read my name, oil and gas production is what I do. I'd give you a lecture but it's not likely worth the effort.

But to stay on point, most of the green innovation happened around the last time oil prices were high. But I'm not too convinced oil prices will go above 75$... Nothing to back that up, but it seems many small O&G outfits can survive at that price, so I'd think the market would flood with oil again and stabilize around there.
