I'm new to the trucking world. Just picked up a 13' SR5 TRD with custom 20in rims and, get this, 305/55r20 Baja MTZ P3 tires. WAY too big correct? These things are not only large, but also have aggressive tread only meant for some real off-road use.

Here's my biggest issue ... we only got 9.5 MPG on the Highway over a 200 mile trip from buying the vehicle. I'm very concerned and my first thought is ... it has to be the tires!

I will never go off-road. Primary reason for buying the Tundra is eventual towing of a Travel Trailer.

I would imagine these tires would be sought after by some folks given they have very few miles on them. I hope we can sell them and apply that toward a set of new std size tires.

    Thoughts? Any help appreciated!

Dang too bad your not in Texas. I've got brand new OEM tires and wheels I would have traded you. I would post them on your local Craiglist. Someone would probably pick them up from you.

Those tires are 33.2"... a little wide but actually not that big. I don't think they're the reason for getting 9.5mpgs. Are you hand calculating?

Looks like I have the LRG Rims Two Time 108 (20x12) rims. I measured the width of the current tires (305/55r20) and they are about 12in wide. So, I assume my rims are the 12in rims (and not the 9in rims that this make/model of rim also comes in).

I assume then that I am restrained to only buying new tires that are within a certain range of width to fit these rims? The LRG website does not mention tire sizes for each width and I'm not experienced at this at all.

Thoughts? I will be towing and driving on mostly paved surfaces other than the occasional gravel/dirt.

    Thanks,
    Brian

    Hey Joonbug,

Yes, completely hand calc'g the mileage. Filled up the tank. Drove until gauge showed exactly half a tank -- 125 miles at that point. Then continued driving until fuel light came on and it was around 240 miles. I think that comes out to around 9.6 MPG with the 26.4 gal gas tank. Am i missing something? I wouldn't doubt it if so. And, the wind was gusting non-stop from a crosswind at 30 to 40mph. So, that had a little to do with it of course.

I was shocked at only ~10mpg! Will be getting less aggressive and smaller tires for these rims anyway soon. But, still am curious.

    Thoughts?

Because the tire is 12" wide doesn't necessarily mean the wheel is 12" wide. Find some markings on the wheel, usually in the inside somewhere. Mark down all numbers so you can figure out the offset too.

There you go. First of all, our tanks only use about 22 gallons when it reads empty. Try it again, but next fill up, drive, then fill up again to see how many gallons you actually used.

And only about 20 gallons when light comes on. So you're probably closer to 12 mpgs.

26 gallon tank but how much did you fill it up with.. you can't really calculate the 26.4 gallon tank cause you're not running it to empty.. so it you're only filling up about 20 gallons then use those same miles and calculate by 20 and you're looking about 12 or more now

On MPG ... yes, agreed. My initial effort was half-hearted. I'll try again based on your suggestions. Thx.

When your miles read 0 and you're on E, there's about 4 gallons still left in the tank. Warning light comes on with about 6 gallons left in the tank.

Did a more thorough MPG check and it appears I'm getting around 14.5 MPG with mixed (mostly highway) on the first half of a tank. I guess that isn't too bad, but still not as high as I hoped with mostly highway miles. Hey .. much better than 9.5 MPG!

    Joonbug,

Finally had the time to note all the markings on the inside of the Rims:

    LRG-108 S171 20x9J
    3600LBS
    SAE J2530 DOT-T
    5/6-LUG 2500LBS
    H2628 C1E25 M
Does any of that help? Looks like the first line mentions a 20in x 9in rim ... is that correct?

How do I determine what size tires I can put on these rims?

    Thanks!

Yup you have 20x9. I believe the stock tire size for 20" wheels is 275/55/20. You can go back to stock size if you wish. But like I said before, I don't think it will make a big difference in mpgs. And personally I like the looks of the bigger tires better. Definitely get an accurate mpg calculation first then go from there.

Put onNitto Grappler G2's today. Only paid $280 a piece installed and balanced. Not too bad on 305/50r20's. Looking forward to many good miles on them. If you have experience with these, let me know your thoughts.

I run toyo AT2's. Nittos are made by toyo so I'd say the two are pretty comparable. Others have run g2's and loved them.
