275/70R18 - NON E LOAD RATED TIRE?

There are only 2 options for non E load tires in 275/70-18.

Duratrac in a D load

Grabber APT in S load

Depressing huh? I really miss the vast tire options I had when upgrading my 4runner and past jeeps. Plenty of options out there in standard load, C, D and E. And C load was always perfect- tougher for true off road and towing but good road manners and did not totally kill MPG and ride quality.

If one of the manufacturers would come out with a C load tire, two of them, one At and one MT tire in 275/70, 285 and 295 they would make a ton of $. Many of the current 1/2 ton truck and SUV folks would run them vs a E load tire- get the perks of an upgrade and larger tire without the negatives of E load (greater weight, less MPG, harder ride, bit of wander at some high speeds and they seem harder to keep balanced). If you want to move up to a larger size then it means E load unless one of the two tires available fit you needs.

General At2 makes a nice 275/65/18 non e rated with 16/32nd thread depth.

correction i meant 265/70/18.

 

There’s a 295/70/18 Terra Grappler that’s P rated, a bunch of us are waiting to see what people think about them. I’m not due for tires for quite a while.

I don’t know if it’s just Canada but I am planning on replacing my stock size tires with 275/70-18 cooper discoverer xlt. They aren’t LT tires, not sure if they’re aggressive enough for you though

I lied, those are 10 ply after all. The cooper discoverer AT3 4S do come in 275/65-18 in non-10 ply if that helps...

 

I am running Falken wild peaks 275/75R18 and I am not too happy with the ride and loss of megs. I average about 12.5. I have had them for a year in the northeast and they are great in the winter and rain. The drawback is they are a heavy tire 61 ish pounds. I am on the fence onsetting Toyo at3 same size at 53 pounds or dropping a size to the Michelin at2 which are stocker the pro.

 

You mean 275/70? The weight and larger diameter as well as the more aggressive tread and probable E load will reduce MPG 1-2 MPG. With E load on a Tundra pay attention to air pressure, in fact, trundras can be pretty sensitive to air pressure anyway, more pressure = more feedback and firmer ride.

I dont think you are going to gain much if anything going to a different E load 275/70, even if it is a little lighter. I run 275/70 E load wildpeaks, moving from Cooper XLT (which were much lighter). I actually get better MPG with the wildpeaks even when they are 6 lbs heavier for some reason. I saw the MPG drop on the Coopers and they were like 54-55lbs.

What PSI are you running? Sweet spot for my truck is 35-40, running 38 usually. Even just a pound or two more and you do notice it in the ride. But E load on a Tundra does ride firmer, no way around that.

If you do not like the ride with E load, there are very few larger tire options in standard load in that size, only one I know of is General Grabber APT. So if you want the smoother ride and better MPG, you will need to look at stock tire sizes in standard load. One suggestion if you drop back to stock size- Michelin Defender is a much better tire than the Michelin AT, check them out.

 

I am on 18 inch TRD pro wheels. 275/70 r18. Well you just saved me about 1400 as I was ready to pull the trigger on some Toyos at3 with the same size. haha. I am going to do some more research but I may have to go stock

Looks great! How long have you had them? Miles? How is the road noise? Ride? MPG? What size/ tire did you previously have? Sorry for all the questions but I need some real world info.

 

Went from the stock michelins to the bigger AT3s a couple of months ago. They feel and ride great, there’s little bit more road noise compared to stock tires at highway speeds but is really negligible, no noise on city streets. Gas mileage hasn’t really been much different I might have lost about 1MPG? But that’s after moving up to bigger tires and leveling. I drive about 45 miles a day coming to/from work and haven’t had to change how often I fuel up. Here’s a shot of recent “fuel economy” on trucks display.

 

Thanks man! It’s between those tires that you have or jumping down to the Michelin‘s for Better gas mileage. I don’t think I’d like to look though.

 

Are those C Load?

 

Those would be E load if 275/70-18. The only tire I know of in that size that is standard load is the general grabber ATX.

 

I haven’t noticed with my 275/70/18 Nitto Ridge Grapplers. It rides good in my opinion. I’ve had them since I had 300 miles on the truck.
