Had an overhead fan box wired where there was no ceiling fan and a new light switch put in. I finished the "no need to do that, I can handle installing the fan (because I don't want to pay for the extra hourly)" portion of the fan install. Just need to swap the existing fan in the adjoining dining room to match. Also got the vegetable beds in place, some of the lawn edged, and bought the soil and compost to put in tomorrow. The Mrs worked on getting the weeds and bark out of the front yard for the landscape consultant to come help us build out some curb appeal.

    Happy wife!

    Depends on who you ask.

I don’t like they the dirt flattens to pancakes and makes my yard lumpy. I’m trying to level out my yard if anything.

some say the dirt/core sample break down and add nutrients back into the soil….I just fertilizer after instead but raking up the cores definitely sucks.

Went and picked up 20 x 16" pavers at 35 lbs each.

Had to lift them off the mid rack above the shoulders to the flat cart. Had to pull and push the cart up the slight incline in three parking lot. Had to move them to the truck bed. Had to move them out of the truck bed to the dolly. Had to move them to a temp storage near where the deck is going in.

So, 700 lbs x 5 different interactions today. My arms are noodles.

And I somehow need 80 of these things?!

Is the delivery cost reasonable? Sometimes the cost to have them deliver is less than $100. Might be worth it just to move them once. Or enjoy the workout :benchpress::muscleflexing:

It's on my radar... Have to figure out how many I need first :(. 80 is a rough guess.

I considered it, but was strapped to get these lines in before the next wave of precip hits our area and completely saturates everything again. Plus, I’m on paternity leave and needed an excuse to get out of the house :)

All lines are in and back filled. Got distracted with family yesterday and have to tie in a few of the heads today, otherwise happy with the work. I installed sprinklers as a summer gig between years in college - happy it all came back quickly.

I used to do this for money way back in my school years over the summers.

Built a “mister” for our chickens when we get warm sunny days. The one I had built froze last winter and cracked, so it was time for a new one…

Yard work for a few hours today. Sprinkler heads in the front yard keep getting covered up by the bermuda grass. So I pulled the grass up around the heads and planted som Fescue seed. Eventually I'll pull up the Bermuda bit by bit and plant Fescue. I'm not a fan of how the Bermuda grows out not up, or of the foxtails.

In the backyard, my neighbors unmanaged grass had been growing under the fence and into my yard. I even broke through the sod I laid down a few months ago. So I used some Liquid Nail to glue the plastic barrier I had placed fence to prevent that from happening. Problem was I didn't glue it to the fence when I put it in the first time.

In prep for the pavers, my wife wants to tear down a privacy panel to make the walkway bigger onto the patio. But we didn't want to give up the privacy so I'm rebuilding the gate and fence to our existing patio and extending it up to 6'. Tore the backside of the fence off to see what I have to work with and bought the supplies for rebuilding tomorrow. The panel had both sides finished but I was afraid to sawz-all without knowing what may be behind it. Now I know... Nothing!

Thanks Ray. We've got 19 hens and one rooster. 4 of the hens I think are 5 years old now? But we still got 14 eggs today (averaging around 10-12 a day currently).

We wanted chickens but we're afraid the dogs would eat them or they'd freeze during the winter (being a Cali transplant, I didn't know what to expect).

Now, my kids would just terrorize them.

    Maybe some day.

They won't freeze as long as they've got a good protected coop to roost in. Give them a round rod (we used closet rod, but a 1-1/2" round branch would also work) to roost on and they nestle their bodies down over their feet to keep them warm. If we've got a nasty cold spell (like we had this winter), I'll run a cord out to the coop and hang a heat lamp, and also block off the small door into the coop overnight to help hold in the heat. But they are pretty hardy animals really. We've lost probably 7-8 over the years to coyotes, but have only lost one to dogs - my parents visited with their dog and between him and our dog, they two got worked up and got ahold of one (the favorite from our first batch of chicks). But that was a couple years ago now...both of our dogs really don't pay any attention to them. If they are in the front yard, sometimes the younger lab will jump at them in fun, but never touches them.

As for kids...well, guess that depends on your kids, their age, and all that. Our girls were very interested in the raising of the first batch of chicks and so have been pretty good with them. But mostly they are my wife's - she has names for about half of them and they come to her (for the most part) if she's outside. We've gotten some from other people that didn't want to keep there's any more, we've raised some from chicks in our garage, we've raised some from chicks by simply sticking them under a broody hen one night so she would take care of them, and we even have one that was raised from an egg from our own rooster and one of our hens. It's certainly been an experience.

Do you travel at all (like in a trailer)? Curious how long we could stay away. My guess is it depends on the egg laying. If we normally do a weekend stint locally, would they be ok in their coop?

Oh, and I put up some copper looking fence caps with built in lights. Meant to do it last year. Finally got around to it.

Landscape lighting upgrade today. Added 10 new lights to the current set up. Had to install a second transformer since the old one couldn't handle the load.

We go on vacation a few times a year for a week - typically we'll have a neighbor come check on them an collect the eggs. It depends a little on the space you have and how many chickens you have. We have an enclosed run attached to their coop - the coop is 6' x 8' and the run is 8' x 16'. They can be in that for a few days without anyone checking on them, but because of how many eggs we get we prefer to have someone let them out (they have a fenced area about 20' x 100' that the coop/run are in the middle of). Otherwise, they sometimes will break the eggs climbing in/out of the nesting boxes to lay new eggs.
We use nipple waterers in the bottom of a bucket that is hanging in the run for them, which keeps the water clean and will last a few days even for the 20 chickens we have. (like this: https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/little-giant-hen-hydrator )
And I custom built some feeders that use 4" PVC drain piping - three individual feeders hold a 20# sack of feed between them and that will last us about a week. We also clean out the coop once a week to swap out for fresh hay (not straw) and wood shavings inside...but it if goes 1-1/2 weeks it's still not bad.

Chickens will return to their roost at dusk every night - so even though we'll let them out of the run in the morning (and then typically open up the fence and let them run free in the yard at about 5pm in the spring/summer), they will always return to the coop at night. We go out about dark to shut the door to the run just to keep out any predators.

It's harder to board our dogs when we leave than it is to worry about the chickens...it takes only a few minutes a day for someone to tend to them. Even the cats are probably more trouble for our neighbor to check on than the chickens are...and when you let them take the eggs in payment, it usually works out!

Picture of the coop/run at sunrise before I've gone out to open the run for them (the "screen door" on the right). You can see one waterer hanging under the nesting boxes on the left side of the coop, and the other is inside the run (sort of a blue glow). Half of the run is actually covered in a roof for some additional rain protection and the other half is open but has chicken wire over the top.

That's awesome. Thank you for all of the details! We definitely don't have that kind of space but would love to in the next few years. COVID didn't do any favors on that front but it gives us goals.
