Repainting 1st gen tundra hood

I have a 2004 tundra that had a repainted hood, years after the repaint the clear was destroyed and demanding a repaint. Paint is 1D6 and I have the equipment needed to repaint except for the actual paint or paint gun. I am not sure where to go from here and would greatly appreciate any input. I tried rattle can, it was a waste of money which is why I have collected the correct equipment. Now I really need proper guidance as this is completely out of my knowledge spectrum. I only have some knowledge with paint correction lol

 

I myself have never attempted color match with any sort of paint other than black rattle cans.

Based on readings from others here, unless you are patient, and willing to start over from scratch a few times ($$$) to get it right. For example, dust got on wet paint, accidental finger print, booth failed, etc.

If you're not willing to be patient, restart, and be frustrated I would take the truck into a body shop, and have them paint the hood.



Not sure if you can see the color difference like I can, but I've attached a picture of my truck. This bed side was replaced in 2014-ish after a small fender bender. It was repainted using OEM Toyota paint, but is much newer than the rest of the truck.

The bedside looks slightly "bluer" to me than the rest of the "silver" truck. I only notice it in certain light, which just so happened to be this time of day during the picture.

Be prepared for slight differences in paint too, unless the whole truck is getting done to match.

Anyways, enjoy the bump because I can't offer much help except what I've read.

I rattle canned my roof and it came out good enough for me. I watched a bunch of youtube vids first. I suggest doing this and you will see that there is no single way to go about it, but there are some fundamentals: sanding, primer, even coats of paint, 2K clear coat, sand orange peel. I did my job outside and there was some wind that kicked up, even at 6 am. I will paint my hood at some point soon, in my new garage (I'm moving) which should make the job come out better. I'd love to have an actually paint gun too, that should improve your results noticeably.

 

Given you will need primer, sealer, color and clear coat, reducer and / or lacquer thinner, and maybe a catalyst hardener, not to mention consumables like d/a sanding disks and fine grade wet and dry, you will probably dollars ahead to have a shop at least give you an estimate. Professional auto refinishing products are pretty expensive and getting harder to find, almost impossible here in Ca. See what a shop would charge at least. Pretty hard to get a nice finish on a big project without a spry booth as well.

 

Has everything needed, minus the materials, tools, skills ect.

I got a quote for $400 to repaint the hood of my Tacoma. I wouldn’t waste the time to try and do it myself.

 

I need to learn this skill myself and get some pointers from my father who’s been doing auto body for 50+ years before he retired.

Prep is everything.

 

I live in florida, specifically Miami, I am surrounded by paint and body shops. I actually spoke to a recommended shop, they've sent me what I need I will be painting a fender from another tundra as practice I have all the sanding materials needed and picked up a 22 gallon compressor for a deal with the tools. will be doing my black truck first as it will be easier and more forgiving. Gonna repaint some smaller things and take it as a learning process. only thing I wont do is my roof cab and probably doors I rather pay a shop

 

please do, knowledge is power, don't choose to pass up on these valuable skills, I try to learn wherever I go it's much easier when it is someone so close to you. Then afterwards you can teach us LOL

 

I enjoy doing things like this in my freetime so it doesn't feel like a waste, I just dont want to drive a truck missing a hood, it was easier to buy new parts that were dent free and had perfect metallic paint meaning a solid basecoat to paint on which was OEM

 

2K is amazing $30 for a pretty good amount of clear in a can, sucks that it takes long to deliver but from what I've heard the change to a paint gun is more than worth it in paint quality and effort along with price depending on how big the project is, also please use a respirator they're pretty cheap and your lungs are pretty important, i have heard horror stories

Thanks. I used the ‘Regular’ Clear Coat from Automotive on the body and got ok results. Their 1D6 is spot on!

The Rustloeum is outstanding on the wheels. The Clear Coat is Superb! Wished I had done the Wheels first to know how nice the CC was and maybe would have tried it on the Body. Inexpensive, too.

All Shpraying done outdoors in little to no wind. Dry atmosphere. Multiple coats. Lots of prep! Prep is key.

 

I'd suggest you find a good paint supply place local to you and start chatting with them. They are like anything else. You know some of the employees are going to be enthusiasts that have all sorts of side projects and passions involving auto paint. If you find a good one he will help you save some money where you should and keep you spending a premium where it counts. Maybe they know someone that does side work that might even let you help and be a part of it.

From my limited experience with my own car painting projects and watching my dad... Like everyone else says, prep is key. Also it seems like clear coat is your money maker. Just look at all those 5-10 year old Nissans that had clear coat peeling off the roofs and trunk lids.

I redid the clear on my titan roof. It turned out great. I had a couple specs that I had to sand/buff out and that's going to happen. We had a small booth and a plastic covered shop with a watered down floor. Having everything planned out will make your paint job easier to get right when the trigger is pulled. Like hunting I guess. Don't have the first trigger pull of the year be on a deer.

 

While you're at it, I'd do a black accent on the hood!

 

Here in miami the side work guys are either charging more than the shops or they're doing the same work I can do for a steeper price lol

 

Best approach to color match (if using real automotive paint mixed on site) is to use the back of the gas fuel door which has no clear coat on it.

 

And there might be a bunch of that. There still might be someone that you can talk into helping you and giving some info. Maybe an old timer. I don't know.

I was lucky enough to have a dad that has painted stuff his whole adult life, friends that had shops next to paint shops or that had painted, and a neighbor growing up that would do body work in his driveway every few weeks. I still rely on the paint counter guys for the supplies unless I know exactly what I want and get my dad to swing a deal.

Thinking back. I actually don't really know how I learned to paint. I just watched and tried and pops said "hey you laid that clear down pretty good". It's kinda like TIG welding. You watch for some things and react before it's an issue I guess.

 

My 2005 has fading clear coat. I’ve just let it ride

 

My hood and roof are developing the clear coat cancer. May get the body shop that sprayed my son's mustang panels to do mine. $150 for a loose panel. Could take the hood off and drop it with them. The roof on the other hand....

 

Just remember that the same thing might happen in a year or two, might not bond well with whats underneath. I picked up a spare hood today only thing I am waiting on is my paint and clear coat to start practicing, I got plenty of free time to do this piece by piece

 

Old timers are awesome, lol I know a WW2 veteran hes like family I go shooting with him every wednesday and tell him about my new situations I find myself in, this is the new one, they agree with the whole trying it out yourself and learning from mistakes. I love developing skills, I mean I started paint correction by hand and after three years I could really make an old car look pretty good with my equipment, sad that yota clear is so cr*ppy I really take care of my paint and being a near perfectionist I can't live with the cracks and solvent pops. As I said hopefully little by little

 

Paint correction is fun stuff. I worked for a guy that got into touch up stuff after I left. I went back for a bit to help him and he had me go along with him in some repairs. It was good to see how he did it. I've been doing little stuff here and there ever since. I made my last truck, a galaxy black titan, look very nice with my touch up and clear repair. It was sad when I sold it. Black is just a a pain in the ass for a truck though. So much area to keep clean and dry.

 

My 2001 has sat out in the SoCal sun since day one and the paint and clear coat are still intact. In fact the whole truck is nice, interior included. I've never figured why some have the clear coat go to shit. There is a Tacoma, just down the street, at least a 2010, maybe newer and it has the clear coat almost gone from the roof and hood, same color as my Tundra. My Suzuki Metro lasted about 15 years before it stated peeling. Not bad in the sun, but the Tundra is still 100%, 20 years later. Maybe waxing it a few times a year really does help.

 

If I had a garage I would do a color change to a metallic black my friend did, its a very fine flake and looks pretty hard to notice mistakes unless you look really really close, either way I love how it looks I just don't have the space to do it without being a neighborhood nuisance

 

I regret starting wax 5 years into it, I know to make sure it's a habit from the beginning if I want to preserve the vehicle

 

I think I may need to touch mine up too....

 

man I think touch up is the least of your concern lol

 

Roof comes off pretty easy.

Getting it back on is harder.
