    It's pretty simple to understand.
Supply goes down, costs go up.
Supply goes down on the east cost, west coast worries the cost will jump and tries to get a full tank before that can happen.

Then, when there is a truly finite supply and a piepline goes down, they start shifting distribution in trucks to go east and alleviate the issues - which would limit trucks going west.

    It's really not that hard.

No one is running a big surplus, so they are dependent upon regular deliveries. As soon as that disrupts, they go dry and the problem then cascades because demand increases on other stores til it crashes. That's how Virginia went from 10% dry to 70% dry in 48 hrs. It's the nature of business in the 21st century with just in time inventory. When Texas went dark for a week, a ton of major manufacturers had to panic because a ripple in their supply chain causes nationwide issues.

It can be exacerbated by "hoarders" and idiots putting gas in plastic bags, but the core issue still remains.

I wish that we all knew the answer to that question. Even more surprising is how many people have 1 ton diesels with nothing to tow...”because I want to...”.

I’d be back in a Tundra tomorrow if my needs were under 8500 lbs.

I am kinda guilty of this. Not 1 ton though, I was looking at 3/4. When I was looking at trucks, I really wanted a diesel. For no other reason than I just wanted one. In my head it was in preparation for the future, I just didn't know when that future would be lol. It wasn't "diesel or no truck" for me though. When salesman called me up to check out the Tundra, I showed up and left with it. It checked off a lot of boxes for me. I'm still not sure if I need a truck right now, but more than happy I have one. The only downside, and it's not even with the Tundra, more trucks in general, is people really do bother you more when you have a truck ....

Now I'm rambling, back to our regularly scheduled thread......

Most people want a diesel at some point for those reasons, and then regret it.

Greedy companies would rather roll the dice and end up paying 5 million per ransom + lose operating revenues while down rather than invest a few hundred thousand per year in proper information technology employees, network equipment, user training, and robust backup/disaster recovery.

Ransomware should never be able to take down entire operations. It can infect small portions but good practices keep it from spreading to everything. If it spreads to everything, you have been negligent. Few resources are as important to national security and health as these pipelines. For this to be handled like that? Should be criminal negligence.

Based on the big oil companies I've worked for, I doubt any reputable pipeline company is willing to roll the dice on cyber security. Maybe your state should stop letting sketchy, fly by night companies build and operate pipelines?

I wanted one for a while. Mainly because of the diesel performance craze. Still, if a nice megacab with a stick a 4wd popped up I'd consider it.

I'm very curious how they collect the 5 million without being traced. I assume they used a crypto currency but even that should be traceable in some way. Either way, 5 million tax free is quite a payday.

I heard about stories like this on Radiolab and according to them its been happening to places like hospitals and police stations for years, everybody just pays.

The whole point of crypto is that it's decentralized, and untraceable. They wont be able to track it.

@Pine Tree State, I totally agree with you. I think most of these companies are operating on "if it ain't broke, don't fix it "
and "what we paying you for if there nothing was broken," companies that don't innovate are usually the ones that end up in such situations and eventually the employees and consumers end up paying the price with "Fees" or no raise, etc.

I think we the consumers are going to end up paying for this in the form of some sort of processing fee/service fees/maintenance, I"ll use Rutgers University as an example here where some students executed a DDOS attack on the university network . After all said and done the university spend upwards of $ 3 million to get back on track.
Who paid the price for that 3 Million, The Students did. The univerisity raised the tuition fee by 2.3% for the 2015-2016 school year.
Its the consumers who end up paying the price, ALWAYS the consumers.

That $5M could have bought a lot of cyber security protection and staff to administer it.

Put cyber security to the side and just plain Old common sense disaster recovery plan could have saved this.

Not that I'm disclaiming your assertion, but not all govt recognize that as a holiday. My wife and I (Both fed employees) were asking our friends what they were doing on Columbus Day since our children didn't have school, They looked at us in a panic because they both were scheduled to work. Any way we found out that it wasn't a school holiday and we even received mail. So every year wwe get a free day off without a child. But that may just be Cali

Right on, and good point! I guess I was thinking (And as a fed you know) there’s a definitive list of U.S. Federal holidays maintained by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. If google is going to give you the results without requiring clicking into the source— they should include all ten federal holidays, right? VA is similar as far as public school goes. I remember my dad being extra happy as a fed when we kids went into school on a day he had off :)

Wouldn’t surprise me if a calculation was made at some point that it would be cheaper to invest in stronger insurance than better infrastructure :bananadead:
