Sorry for the delay responding. I was avoidably detained from posting, lesson learned...

I found the same as you on Google. Nothing.

I have the suspicion that this watch was purchased the same time my Dad bought some fake Rolex as a gag for me and my brothers off a vendor in NYC. :monocle::hattip:

I treated myself with the new Casio GA1100-1A1 Gravitymaster twin sensor G Shock. I've always liked the G Shock series. Had a triple sensor Pathfinder for years. Pretty beefy. Strap is good too.20210325_153047.jpg 20210325_153538.jpg

I first thought you guys were talking about antiques... not new stuff. ;)

I collect American pocketwatches. Waltham, Elgin, Illinois, Hamilton... I really like the Railroad grade watches. Finest pocketwatches ever built.

Here's the one I'm currently carrying: a Hamilton 992B. 21J, adjusted six positions. I need to replace the current plastic crystal with a glass one; I have replacements, just haven't gotten around to it.

    20210418_163917.jpg

    20210418_164457.jpg

I've got several more... a Waltham Riverside, a key wind Waltham 1857 made in 1868, and my pride and joy, a 60 hour Illinois Bunn Special. My dad found that one and overhauled it for my mother; she wore it for years on a necklace and I inherited it a couple of years. Need to clean it as I'm not sure how long it's been since that was done.

My grandfather gave me a railroad watch he had but there's something wrong with the mechanism; it won't wind. I don't know if I trust any shops around here to work on it, though.

Most watchmakers are pretty up front with their areas of expertise. But yeah, many these days do little more than change batteries.

You might want to contact the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors to find a local watchmaker. www.nawcc.org.

I'd offer, but I've long since stopped working on anyone else's watches but my own. If you want to PM me your area and maybe pix of the watch and movement (if you can), I can try and reach out and find someone near you.

Very nice Hamilton, they were built locally many moons ago. A few guys I work with had parents that worked at the Hamilton plant. They were king of the hill when it came to American made railroad watches. Their precession was top of the line back then. It really is funny when you think of how important a pocket watch was to railroad workers and how they tried to keep everything and everyone on time. Watches weren't cheap, and now a days mechanical watches are almost underappreciated. Rarely does anyone wear a watch that needs to be wound (by the stem) everyday, auto wind and battery operated are the norm. There were an unbelievable number made back then and yours looks like a survivor, keep care of it.

They were essentially laboratory grade instruments - they HAD to be accurate to within 30 seconds a week. And they were NOT cheap; railroad personnel had to buy their own, so that's why you find so very many high-grade railroad watches in cheap "nickel-silver" or gold-filled cases. They spent as little on the cases as they could, because the movement was the expensive and required part. No one cared what they looked like...

Back in 67 or so, my dad found a class at a local adult school on watch repair. He studied with the teacher for some 5 years (in his free time - my dad was an electrical engineer by trade and was the chief engineer and VP of a local avionics test equipment manufacturer) and eventually started teaching his OWN classes. His business card read "Antiques to Accutrons" - he worked on everything from 18ty century fusees to Bulova Accutrons - even made his own test equipment for the Accutrons.

I got my love of mechanical watches from watching him work on them, and have quite a few. Plus my own watch bench; I took the class, too. :) Oh, I have a smart watch, too... but I prefer my pocket watch. Just has more "soul" to it.

Unless you have the actual watchmakers tools to do so, AND a cleaning machine and the proper oils, may I recommend you take it to a watchmaker, instead? It's insanely easy to damage a pocketwatch with incorrect tools and oils.

Alright, I have a watch collection but only one left wrist.
I own one Rolex DateJust that was my first 'wedding ring' because Im not a ring person myself.
The Rolex I still have, way longer then my first marriage.
I do like a watch with weight, so Movado are my choice brand.
The Movado Bold Blue one is the feather of Movado, and lightest weight one I own.

Thats a nice watch but is slightly flawed. I can’t stand it when watch makers make the hands the same color as the dial. Black hands on a black dial and white hands on a white dial is idiotic in my opinion.

The hands aren’t the same color as the dial..it’s an open hand. What you’re seeing is the dial.

Nice thread! I have a small collection of not fancy watches as fancy watches are not really in the budget. My favourite brands are Casio and citizen sofar. Here is one of my favourite everyday watches. I’d say it’s perfect except for the acrylic crystal. The pushers are easy to depress unlike any of the square g shocks I used to wear, the lume is excellent and as a backup has the best backlight I’ve seen, it’s a multi band 6 watch so gets updates every night and it’s solar and features all of casios regular features. Another thing I like about these wave ceptor watches is the second hand lines up perfectly with the numbers...I have more expensive quarts watches that can’t claim this

Yea, but still the same problem. The outline is still way too small and can’t be easily seen when your eyes grow older. Not picking on your watch in particular but I’ve turned away many fine watches because of this. I’m very fond of micro brands and have come across some incredible watches but either ruined it with the hands or made it a 38mm case

I stopped caring about watches after I got my first Apple Watch to be honest. It’s just way too convenient being able to do certain functions without having to pull my phone out say during a meeting or conference. I did swap out my Apple Watch of 4 years for a Garmin Instinct Tactical Solar (a mouthful, i know) and love the simplicity of it

Ok guys who here dose watch mods or a Seiko guy in the US. I’ve got my original Seiko SKX 150 Meter divers from 1992 when I went to Navy Dive School and It’s in need of a Total work over. It stopped running several years ago and I’d love to have a new Crystal installed. I’ll add some pictures when I get home next week.

I do my own general watch maintenance myself but for the major stuff, I have used “Total Watch Repair”. They did a good job and was timely.
