So I shop for two weeks for a new truck and finally find one. I call the salesman and he gives me the run around for two days. The truck they were advertising was still in build and they didn't know if it was sold or not or when it would come. I had to find that out from another salesman. I blow him off and call another dealership as they were advertising a truck with the options I was looking for at a dealership where I bought a 4Runner at less than a year ago. The salesman said they had the truck but then didn't return my call. Two days later I called and got another salesman that seemed like he wanted to sell me the 2021 brown 1794a that I wanted. We worked out a deal over the phone where I filled out a form for him with my credit card info for the deposit and we make plans to meet up at a place about half way between us and the dealership to finish the deal. We would meet in a fast food joint parking lot and I would give him a check and he would give me some paperwork and a bill of sale and send me the title in less than 30 days since there was no financing involved. Normally I would not do a cash deal for a vehicle. First I usually wouldn't be able to afford it and second it's just not a smart move to use cash when interest rates are so low but it's a weird situation and a long boring story.

Yesterday was 30 days so I call about the title. I ask what the status is and they say that they should get 30 days to process it. I said that I know that and that the thirty days is up. They say that they might send it to me or they might send it to the county. I ask them why they would send it to the county since it was a cash deal. The answer was, "We send about 90% of the titles to the county." That doesn't answer my question. I ask them if they are going to send mine to the county or to me since it was a cash deal and they said that they didn't know but they would know by Wednesday which would be 35 days and I still might not have a title in hand.

I have the feeling they don't know where the cert of origin or the title is or they don't want to look for it so they just give the salesman vague answers to shut me up. I feel for the salesman since he did his job. It isn't his job to get me the title. That is the comptroller's job. He's kind of stuck in the middle. He did reminded me that the temp tags are good for 60 days but they have already burnt up 30 of those days. That only leaves thirty days for the county to screw up or the post office to lose my stuff. I really don't want to be a jerk but I don't want to do anything substantial to the truck until I have the title free and clear in my hands just in case they can't produce a title. At this point I am just trying to figure out how much I should push before getting real cranky with these folks. I have a talent for being a supreme Ahole when I have to but I hate doing that unless it is absolutely necessary.

Sounds like you need to take a personal trip to that dealership with all of the paperwork involved and have a chat with the GM. No more middle men.

make sure your DMV still issue a title. I had a similar problem with my truck and my wife car both payed for in full the same month we got the title for the wife car but not for my truck went to DMV and was told they don't issue a paper title un les the seller request it or the new owner dose. was a bit odd

Either way the dealership should be able to get you another temp tag too if it doesn't come in. I also agree with the above about cutting out the middle man

I would totally agree but I don't want to drive three hours one way to get them to do their job. I sent the GM of the dealership an email. If that doesn't get some movement then I will file a complaint with the state.

Still waiting for the title. Talked to them a week ago (last Monday) and they said they were going to send it "any day" and that they were going to "overnight it" to Larimer County". I just talked to a clerk ad the county and they haven't received it yet. Time to give the dealer another call this morning. If they don't give me an honest and direct answer I am going to file a complaint with the state and the BBB. By law they have 30 days. It's been 40.

Fl is the same way. Title are electronic at the DMV unless you request paper and then they mail it to you. Alot of states are like that now.

I talked to the county this morning. I can't register the truck till the state gets a title from the dealership. The state has 30 days to "deliver" the title to the person that purchased the vehicle.

I wish they did here but they don't. The only thing they can do at the lot here is issue a temp tag. The county or the state has to do the rest. That is even what the DMV told me this morning on the phone as stated in my previous post.

Why are you wasting time by emailing the GM? Should have been calling him by now on a daily basis. And yes, it's about time to become an "a-hole" (we actually all know what you meant, you know). I'd've been going up one side of him and down the other by now.

I am working on the formal complaint now. Colorado requires that the person contact the GM to try to resolve the complaint or the state won't even look at the complaint. This is on their web site. I have checked that box now so I can move forward with the formal complaint.

    From the state's web site:

    Before Filing a Complaint
    1. Contact the dealership's general manager or owner, and explain the problem.

    2. If the dealership does not satisfactorily resolve the problem, file a written complaint with the Auto Industry Division. An inquiry into a complaint is limited to alleged violations of the motor vehicle law.

Hawaii certainly isn’t. It takes a month to get an appointment to go to the DMV with your paper title.

I might have missed it, but how far is the dealership? I saw where you met the salesman halfway. If not too far, drive there one day and don’t leave until you have it and some free stuff from the accessories they have. It’s easier to blow someone off over the phone than in person.

Usually I am a "face to face" type of person but the dealership is a four hour drive one way with good traffic. I live almost on the Wyoming state line in the mountains and they are on the other side of Denver.

Yup. No such thing up here.

You need a bill of sale to register a vehicle. If the vehicle is brand new and never registered before, the dealer gives you a new vehicle form (basically states where vehicle was manufactured and that it aligns to all Canadian rules) that you bring when you get plates. They keep the form and it's done.

Any lien holders (like banks) register against the VIN through the registry database which is why most people get a VIN search done before buying a used vehicle.

It is but it also put responsibility on a used vehicle buyer to check the VIN for liens before buying. Not everyone does and sometimes there can be a surprise.

I called the Colorado Auto Industry Division yesterday and left a message that I wanted to talk to someone before I filed a formal complaint. I got a call back today. She asked me to summarize the situation. I did and she said that they get complaints like this a lot. I filed the complaint with a lot of documentation tonight. We shall see what kind of results that will get. She said it would take 7 to 10 days to get back to me.

She seemed like she was motivated when I explained the situation to her on the phone today. I told her that the dealer solution was for me to just shut up and wait for the title and that seemed to piss her off. We will see I guess.

    Update:

Still no certificate of origin or title. I filed a complaint with the Colorado Automotive Industry Commission May 11. They say it could take awhile to complete the investigation. The guy that is going to work on the investigation called and said that he has 40 cases ahead of mine.

I already ordered a topper and I am ready to pull the trigger on a lift kit, new wheels and tires but I don't want to do that until I have the title. That is putting 10k into a truck that I don't actually own yet but have paid for. Yesterday I decided to do everything that I can to be a terminal pain in their ass in the attempt to get them to deliver the certificate. I filed a complaint with the BBB and called Toyota Corporate today. The woman that I talked to said that if I don't have a satisfactory answer by the end of today I need to get back with her so she can escalate it to a higher level with corporate. I just want to customize my truck. I hate arguing with anyone to get them to do what they are legally required to do.

It's almost time. If the call to Toyota corporate or the BB don't work pretty quick then it will be time to put some money into an attorney. I would rather put it into headers or a winch bumper however.

    Update again.
I finally got fed up and decided to become a terminal pain in their ass. I have a talent for being a pain in the ass. I filed a complaint with the BBB, the state and Toyota corporate then I got one of the sales manager's cell phone numbers and office extension. I gave the complaints all time to percolate and get back to the dealer and then I called the sales manager on his cell. I left a message and immediately called his office number. He answered his office phone. I asked where my certificate of origin was and when I could expect it. He apologized and expressed frustration I didn't have it yet. He said that it would be hand carried from the dealership in Englewood to the Larimer County DMV in Fort Collins. We will see tomorrow if it was delivered. If it was it will be build time. The first thing I will do is order the wheels, tires, shocks and stuff for the lift.

You're still being way too nice. I'd press them hard with the threat of legal action for their failure, your inconvenience, etc, and ask how they planned to make it right. "Hand delivered" after over a month would not be cutting it IMO.

Contact your state Attorney General and file a complaint. That will certainly get the stealer--ships attention and hopefully your issue resolved
