For that price. I’d totally buy that. But first mod? Get rid of the lift.. make it a stock height sleeper

I think the 1st gen hit the bottom a few years back, and like other “classic” yotas, is riding back up in proportion to the inflation of the dollar and the new model prices.

My thoughts: You can spend $15k on 1st gen and have zero depreciation over 10 years or spend $60k+ on a loaded 22 crew max and lose $30k+ in depreciation in the first ten years. MPG difference and maintenance won’t cost you that much...

 

Normally I’d say you are correct, but no one wants a tiny twin turbo v-6 Tundra, that’s probably still going to get shitty mileage. 21’s are going to be worth a lot long into the future.

I’m still wishing they would of thrown some tech at the 5.7 and a 10 speed Aisin and call it good till 2030.

 

There are good deals to be had it you are a little handy and don't mind that you aren't driving the newest model. My thoughts on buying our 2012 gx460 with 80 thousand miles was something like this... It could last 10 years and 100-150 thousand more mileage, hopefully without anything serious, and if we keep it in decent condition it still might be worth $15k. I also don't think I'm losing any money on my tundra unless you consider the dumb stuff I do to modify it.

The trick is finding something solid and that will be in demand later on. I think the first gen tundra and other Toyota vehicles are right there. No doubt.

I picked this 1995 T100 4x4 DX in California for $15,000 then put another $7000 into it. The professional appraisal came back at $28,000. So yes when demand exceeds supply the price will go up. Plus they are cool looking trucks

Using a 100 point system when grading a vehicle, The higher the score the closer to perfect. There is a lot to conceder when grading your classic vehicle, How close to stock is it?, That is a big one. Anyway this truck is a 91 as it sits 05/2021 and Im addressing the items that will bring my score up. There are only a hand full of T100 4x4 that rank in the 90's in the USA and thats it.

After driving it, yea the VVTI and 5 speed is very noticable

 

I need to tow with an older first gen sometime and see what it's like.

Not having driven the 05 and newer I have no real comparison, but I’ve been happy with ours thus far. I think I’ve always said another 30 hp and 30 ft/lbs would be nice with every vehicle I’ve towed with.

I am not entirely familiar with the Toyota vvti, but in my experience with Honda’s similar vtec, the main power change is a small increase in low end torque with a much higher impact to peak hp when the cam profile change occurs.

I feel like my 4.7 w/o vvti falls on its face at >4K rpm. Between 2300-3500 is pretty damn good. I imagine the 05 and newer extra gear in the transmission is more beneficial than the small increase in hp/torque you would see, as I imagine that increase to hp/tq is up higher in the rev range than I typically am when towing.

When towing below 2500 rpm on a hill the power drops off considerably, then the next gear change down to second seems like an enormous jump in rpm. Having that extra gear like you guys have would most likely make me a very happy fella.

I feel like I am making really good power around 4k+. I don't hang out there for long. I towed a lot with the 4 speed in the 4runner so I was specifically looking for the 5 speed this time around. The torque of the v8 may have been the only thing I was missing. I drop down to 3rd often and I suspect that is where I would notice the most difference. @ezdog I know 44 gets into the hills as soon as you head SW, is that where you tow or is it flat? How do you generally drive?

Look at these two with 270k+ miles. Could still live a good life with some TLC, the frames probably aren't too bad.
