Touchy Throttle

I've found a little info on a recall on another site but nothing here.
My 2007 with 5.7V8 has a super touchy throttle. Most of the time it's fine, but sometimes even the slightest throttle application causes it to leap forward. It did it yesterday at the airport as I was leaving the curb and scared the crap out of folks.
Throttle also seemed super touchy on the bumpy freeway, where bumps were causing throttle surge.

Toyota has done a general inspection on the truck, wondering if I should ask them for something specific. Any info would be helpful thanks!

The Pedal Commander has really reduced the touchiness of the gas pedal in my '07.

 

I had the same issue when I bought my 07 used. I replaced it with an OEM pedal that I bought off of Amazon and the touchiness went away.

 

I love the responsive gas pedal in my 2007, and I wouldn't do anything to change it.

 

Responsive yes, its the inconsistency that bugs me.

 

It appears that revised part 78110-0C012 cures the touchiness. I may try it.
The inconsistent response could be my foot - when I had the issue at the airport, I had just come off a week driving a Nissan Titan, so perhaps my foot was miscalibrated

 

nah, its definitely not just you. this is the first vehicle ive ever had an issue with. its impossible to roll onto the throttle. the first 1/8" of throttle depression does what the first 1/2" should do.

idk why people mistake it for throttle response. its possible to have great throttle response and still be able to ease onto the throttle. ive gotten a bit better at easing away from a red light, but the tundra is my second vehicle, so every time i switch back to it, i end up giving my GF and i some wiplash at least a couple times. it especially sucks for trying to increase my mpg, or retaining traction on a slippery surface from stopped. ive heard the throttle commanders can help, but im not about to spend a couple hundred to fix something so stupid.

ive heard that the issue arose from toyota's shitty fix for the recall. apparently the fix was to install a shim which made most trucks accelerate in this manner. ive also heard that if you complain about the touchy pedal they will swap out for the newer pedal under the recall.

 

You can have the pedal replaced with the latest version and it will help. That’s what I did.

 

Found a new pedal on ebay for $85 so I ordered it. I'll report back.

 

Yeah, they put a shim in the original pedal during a recall which is what is causing the abruptness.

for that same recall they could have also replaced the pedal with this part number if the owner complained about it:

I ordered one of these pedals a few weeks ago for my '07 for $27+shipping and a brand new 78110-0C012 pedal showed up. it solved 90% of my issue with it.

 

I took the shim out of mine and it was still sticky. There are some plastic cams inside that cause friction and were binding on mine. When I inquired and said I wanted to just buy the pedal the parts guy at dealer insisted on taking care of it for me. Ever since then parts cost double though

 

I had a cut pedal from the floor mat recall that was touchy in my 07. I replaced it with a

You’ll get used to it. I remember back in 2004 or so we had a new Tahoe and it went for service and they gave us a newer Tahoe with drive by wire. For the first mile or two every bump was a throttle jostle. I got used to it quickly and didn’t notice it until we got our throttle cable Tahoe back.

 

After 4 years I'm pretty much used to mine now, but if there's crappy asphalt (holes, etc) when I take off I can still snap necks.

 

I was wondering if it was just me. My Tundra scares the crap out of my 17 year old when he drives it, compared to his V8 4Runner. The throttle on mine will snap your neck every so often. It just isn't consistent in the way it accelerates.

 

I also dislike the touchy pedal. It’s a day and night difference between the Tacoma and tundra.

 

ok, so im trying to figure out what pedal to buy... seems like the 04000 pedal is about $30-50. the 78110 is about $150-200. big difference. id obviously rather spend $40 than $150. my only concern would be replacing it with the part that was recalled to begin with. im assuming the last owner did the recall, so i dont want to end up with liability undo-ing the recall work.

which part number did you go with?

do you know which part yours was?

may i ask what led you to that part number vs the other? im assuming this is a quick install.... seems like 2 bolts and an electrical connector?

04000-0440C pedal. The pedal in the box will be labelled 78110-0C012 which is not the recalled pedal, it's the new one.

I assume that this was an internal part number for Toyota so the dealers could order the pedals at cost or something for the recall.

I ordered a 04000-0440C pedal and got a new pedal labeled 78110-0C012 inside the box labeled 04000-0440C.

and yes, it's easy to install, takes 60 seconds. Two nuts and a wiring plug. the nuts can be a bit tricky since they're lock nuts of some sort, but they are reusable.

 

The replacement pedal helps but the throttle mapping pre 14 is in fact different. No mistake about that.

 

THANKS! yeah, everything im seeing in googling the 04000 part number refers me to different threads on the forums shows people talking about it being the pedal to get to solve the issues. and it looks like there is an online toyota dealer in my state that will ship it to my door for $37. i went ahead and added it to my, input email/information, and then close the tab right before completing checkout to see if they send me a discount code. ive had that work at quite a few dealers over the years

im pretty stoked to check off the top item on my very very short list of annoyances about this truck. and i dont expect miracles, but i have a feeling it will make a mild improvement to my MPG.

04000-0440C for cheap-ish. 10 minute very straight forward install, 2 nuts and the electrical connector.

 

Yes this is the most recent version of the pedal that is called out as a replacement in the recall bulletin. Same as the one I have.

Got pedal, installed it - very simple install, two 10mm nuts and one electrical connector. Took about a minute to swap it.
I haven't driven it that much, but so far the new pedal definitely seems less touchy.

Why? I'm guessing that if you measured the output of the potentiometer, pressing 1/2" on the old pedal yields more voltage than on the new one, so that's why it is more sedate.
At WOT (wide open) the voltage should be the same, so if you floor it there is no loss of performance.

 

The throttle pedal on my '07 Tundra was modified by Toyota in 2008 - per TSB, they added the "shim". That didn't seem to change the level of throttle sensitivity, IMO. Over the past 13 years I have not thought much about it. A few of weeks ago I found the metal cover that you remove to install the shim, on my floormat. Decided to replace the pedal after reading so much about replacement pedals and throttle sensitivity. Got the replacement pedal for 37 bucks delivered (

$46 04000-0440C Accelerator Pedal Assembly

04000-0440C). I must admit, it did change the "feel". It's subtle, but, definitely improved.

 

I'm so glad I didn't jump on either of these TSBs... I don't have issues with my pedal... The only unintended acceleration I got was once in Arizona when I flew past an unmarked state trooper, that I didn't see.... and I got out of a ticket for....

 

I picked up my 08 5.7l last June. So I've had it about a year now and have always felt the has pedal was a bit jumpy, especially at intersections or stop signs with ruff roads, if I'm not paying super close attention it's not a very smooth acceleration. After reading about a recall, Im curious if the previous owner did anything about it, or if I have the new pedal. Is there a part number took look for?

 

Log into Toyota owners (Toyota website) and add your truck. If it was done, 99% chance it will show up there. 99% chance if the pedal recall shows up that they just installed a shim and didn’t replace the pedal.

It’s inside the pedal assembly. Won’t hurt to get a new pedal, even if it had been replaced.
