I picked up this adapter for my 2nd Gen after my wife got me a Nexar Beam for Christmas this year. The adapter is such a simple plug and play option and the camera works fantastic, but, with my 2nd Gen having my back up camera in the mirror, i've lost use of the screen in the rear view mirror. I suspect it's due to the Dongar adapter not being pinned out completely to accomodate the video wiring from the camera in the tailgate, but to just provide power to the USB. I'm now debating trying to add some jumpers with the pinouts onto the adapter or wait to get a head unit that has the connectivity to the backup camera.

I'll second the Nexar Beam, obscenely easy to setup and use and you have clips in your hands immediately. I slammed my tailgate shut in the driveway and the camera sent my phone a "Parking Incident" notification due to the shake of the vehicle. After two times of being backed into in a parking lot, with no notes or witnesses, this has really given me some faith in catching the next offender lol

 

Does anyone know if this will work with a 2016 Tundra?

So long as you don't have the backup camera in your rearview mirror, this will work perfectly. I have one on my 2013 and aside from losing the camera, it pulls power for my Nexar Beam with a short jump cable from the USB to the camera.

 

For whatever reason my wife is a magnet for idiot drivers when she is out and about. I get to hear lengthy details on one asshole or another almost every time.... time to get her front and rear ones for her Pilot

 

I assume folks using the Nexar Beam are only using them looking forward, not slapping another on the back window?

 

That's correct, I only have a forward facing one at this point. I'm not certain if you can run 2 cameras on the Nexar app at the same time, i'd have to do some research first.

 

It's a great looking camera, hard to beat the price, but I want a rear facing as well.

 

I have the backup camera in my stereo head unit. I pryed off the cover on the back of the rearview mirror and there's already something else plugged into the adapter? #Confused Help an old fart out folks LOL

 

Okay, so I'm going to order the same setup as you, and have been interacting with the Dashcam Store here in town. Three questions:

1. They say the 6m cable that comes with the product is enough to run to the rear camera in a CrewMax, but you say it's not. I can buy an 8m cable from Viofo; is it needed, in your opinion, to run in the door sills?
   
2. If I order a cable from Viofo, I can get it with both cable ends being right angle. I asked Dashcam about that, and their reply was "We’ve actually installed probably close to 50 of these camera setups all with the straight and right angle connections and have never had a problem." I guess "never had a problem" might not translate to "looks just as good as having a cable with two right angles", and it appears that you wish you had had the cable with two right angles. True?
3. I have an appointment for 2/1 with the Dashcam Store to do the install. They charge $200 for this, (but also give 20% off for veterans, yay!), but I'm pretty handy. I installed deadening in my Tundra, as well as an OEM Audio + setup, so was wondering if I should just skip their install and do it myself. Your thoughts?

I would bet you have a powered, auto dimming rear view mirror. This adapter just jumps the gap between the plug from the body harness to the mirror. There's a trim piece that's attached to my mirror, but it looked like part of the actual mirror that needed to be pried off. Do not pry this off, the trim piece is attached to the actual plug. If you remove the mirror from the windshield, you should be able to reach the locking piece on the body harness to unplug it from the mirror. I'll try to snag you a pic of it tonight when I get home.

 

I meant to follow up here. I went with the Akaso mirror dash cam and I really like it. Only issue I’ve had is that I tapped the reverse light power but it won’t come on automatically when I reverse. Minor inconvenience. I just tap the mirror face and it turns on.

It’s a combo front and back up cam.

Edit: some of these came out upside down. My bad. Promise the truck was right side up!

 

Anybody have a camper shell and a front/rear dash cam setup that they would recommend? I don't think most are meant to work going outside the vehicle and into the bed. Was thinking of going two different ones, but not sure how I would save the footage on the back one. Any input appreciated.

 

In the post just above yours, I've got my back camera mounted below the bumper. It's worked great for the year I've had it installed.

Thanks, that's all I needed to know! I'm going to order the 8' cable, with dual right angles from Viofo, and pick up the rest of the stuff from the Dashcam store here in town. The install will probably be a bit less then the OEM Audio+ system, and that was pretty easy.

Viofo A129Pro Duo yesterday, and everything worked as expected, except the 8m cable... No back camera, so I draped the 6m cable that comes with the product over the seats and plugged it in. Rear camera! I switched back to the 8m, just to be sure, and the camera dropped again. Bummer. They'll have to send me a replacement, but are on holiday for another week.

 

Let me know if you have any issues with your clock resetting. Mine keeps revering back 12hrs. So if I set it for 1530hrs it switches to 0330hrs after I turn car off.

Not a huge deal...but annoying when I'm looking for a video off the SD.

For those that use the Garmin mini and have the JBL head unit, does the video display on the head unit? I ask because it's a radial button when determining vehicle compatibility.

I have the A129 PRO Duo, and either I'm a dumbass, or the Viofo website needs a bit of organization to make it clear which cable I needed for my PRO Duo. Either way, I ordered the Plus 8m cable, both right angle, and that's the reason the rear camera doesn't work in my setup. Viofo is sending me the correct cable, and rather than pitch the one I have for the Plus, maybe someone here can make use of it.

Mine seems to be better since I did this:

Set my time zone to +0 (I was always using +6 like I do on all my other devices based on where I am) and then just enter correct time

It has been holding strong for a few days now.

Aside from that, my next fix will be to bring it inside and charge it via USB for 12+ hours. Some say the clock time is held by a small 3v coin cell, rechargable and short trips doesn't often charge it enough.

With Covid, I don't drive much and my drives are all to work and home.

I got this one for Christmas, so I'm just going to make it work. It's one of the Christmas gifts I received that I have not gotten around to installing yet. I hope to install it in the next couple of weeks.

I might be missing something here, but wireless isn't needed to run the dashcam. Sure, it can be used to download videos, and also to adjust settings, but I guess the question is how often are you going to do that, compared to how often you use CarPlay? Plus, downloading videos and adjusting settings can be, (and probably should be), done while not driving. In those instances, few and far between, IMO, just turn off CarPlay, do what you need to, turn CarPlay back on. Also, videos can easily be downloaded by pulling the card out and using a card reader in your computer.
