Haha! Been wanting to do this, but we usually leave Coke cans for the date. It’s awesome to demo a kitchen or wall and find what other builders leave behind for us.

That’s pretty sweet. I got the idea for coke cans because I once found some Budweiser cans in a wall from 1960.

Whenever I use concrete for any reason, build a wall, fence post, etc, I always leave a crushed beer can in it.

I have remodeled a few places that had newspaper in the walls for “insulation” - the oldest was early 1900’s

Nice! I’ve noticed on this thread that you have a pretty vast knowledge in construction. What’s your primary area of expertise?

I found a 1944 first edition of Wag-By Wall written by Beatrix Potter on a demo project last week. My clients let me have the book since my wife loves old books. The book is in almost perfect condition.

this is gonna be a little long winded- sorry…

I grew up swinging a hammer when I was 4.

Every year as a kid my dad had one major project going on our house (which started life as a one-room school house that was converted to a 2-bedroom house). Built a shop. Jacked the house up and poured a foundation under it (originally sitting on cinder blocks). Amazing blued white-pine cabinets in the kitchen. Added a two-story, two bedroom / one bath addition on the back with a huge family room and laundry/mud room. Added an extension on the front to put a root cellar under part of the house and extend the living room and dining room. Cedar siding on the whole thing. Pole barn for storage. Wood shed (big enough to store a camper in along with about 8-10 cord of wood). Covered porch. Hot tub deck. Rock fireplace (inside). There was very little we didn’t do ourselves (the rich fireplace is about all that comes to mind). Plenty of yard projects. Huge garden. And growing up, my brother and I were expected to be working if he was working, and playing if he was playing.

At the end of eighth grade, they sold that house and we moved about 20 miles away. And the process started again…throughout high school and continued after I left home (they just sold that house with the 21 acres it sits on, and have been doing the process again on a new place for the past 15 years).

We also fished, hunted, raised rabbits and hogs for food, did lots of hiking and camping, and generally enjoyed life outside. And my parents both pushed my brother and I to work very hard at school and science. We were both very active in Boy Scouts (Eagles), 4H, and FFA, and had a network of people that pushed us to always excel.

I ultimately went to college for architectural engineering with a focus on building structures, along with a second major in construction management.

I got a job working for a large regional industrial construction company straight out of college and spent ~13 years working as an assistant PM and PM running construction projects ranging from small one day paper machine shutdowns to constructing dual cycle power plants and doing central utility plants for major universities, hospitals and microchip plants, including everything from dirt work, concrete, steel, piping, electrical, ductwork, equipment assembly, etc. I’ve had to help turn wrenches with the pipefitters or millwrights to get a facility back online after a 24-hour outage (where nothing goes as planned), and I’ve had to negotiate $15 million dollar change orders for added scope or undisclosed conditions.

The past 10 years (still same company) I’ve been in charge of the 3D modeling (BIM) associated with those same types of projects so that we can fabricate it in our shops before final assembly on site - including installing 78” chilled water mains on top of a huge microchip fab (using the largest mobile crane in the world), building a French Fry plant that processes over 1 million pounds of potatoes per day, countless high rises and hotels, and even building an anhydrous ammonia shipping barge in 100-ft pre-fabricated modules with 100% of the steel, pipe, and electrical all pre-installed before seeing on the deck.

Somewhere in the middle I managed to build the house I live in now - we self-contracted concrete, framing, insulation, and sheet rock and then did all the rest of the work ourselves, including a couple minor “remodels” (cutting in more windows and residing) and then a full kitchen remodel this last year. I’ve also helped several friends build houses and shops.

I never stop learning from every new job I do, and my engineer brain likes to fully dissect and understand how and why something works. I also retain just about anything that I take the time to read and understand. I’ve got a knack for reading code books and legal documents and being able to then explain them in layman’s terms. I’ve self taught how to read computer code well enough to follow it and trouble shoot it, and I have built excel files that literally melted a laptop CPU with the number of calculations and lookups they were performing (that was many years ago, and before I learned how databases worked).

So, my primary area of expertise? Probably industrial and mechanical construction…but mostly a jack of all things building.

Screwy thing is, I’ve never got into wrenching on cars. I understand the basics behind the ICE, but don’t know any real details and how a person would pull one apart, rebuild one, or how everything else functions. It just wasn’t something I ever spent time with someone that did that. :notsure:

there’s my life story in 5000 words or less. :)

ETA: lol - I forgot to mention the two years in college working as a residential framer, one year working for a handyman/remodeler whose wife was a high-end architect (we redid two craftsman houses from the turn of the century - that’s where I found the newspapers), and one summer working in a warehouse for a trucking company that shipped John Deere mowers.

So....I'm no where close to being a carpenter, not by any means, never claimed to be, or never had the desire to be. I Leave that shit to the professionals, for me its cheaper that way!
That being said, I haven't been to the hardware store for a while, I went in today for a couple sheets of 7/16" osb AND MY MIND WAS BLOWN!
$68 per sheet! 3/4" was almost $90 per sheet!
Is that the normal going price for osb, or is it just because of my location?
