The 2020 has a Ranch Hand front brushguard/bumper
I have been towing a lot lately, with a flatbed trailer.
The load is low, in the center and close to the rear bumper.
I can see nothing in the rearview mirror.
I can see maybe 10% in the sideview mirrors.
Thought occurs to me that I have the perfect tool for keeping an eye on the load Right There in the reversing camera!

Any ideas on how to get that thing to turn on while going forward?
It would be perfect to see a tarp come lose or a load shift.

There is a mod where you add a switch and tap into the wire in the mirror harness. I did it on my 2013. I don't if its the same on the 20/21's.

I’ve never had the balls to try this, but supposedly if you’re driving over 30 mph or something, the truck can be safely shifted into reverse and it will activate the backup camera. That research is on you though. I take no responsibility if you blow up your tranny trying this.

For the 3rd (14-19 for sure) gens with backup camera in the nav display there are two pins you can touch together (with a switch or relay) that will activate the backup camera. Check your specific year wiring harness but I believe it's pins 1 and 2 in the J135 connector (28 pin on the back of the head unit). I did a write up on my website for how I did this on my truck for cheap.

OR for the simple plug and play no headaches easily removeable with more features go with the FRAC system linked above.

I can confirm this works. When I'm almost home, I'll put it into reverse anywhere between 25 & 30mph. Not all the time, just random. What I'd like to know is, if I leave it there and continue to slow down, will it automatically actual shift when I get down to a certain speed, wait till I come to a full stop and shift, or nothing until I hit park or drive then back to reverse. I've accidentally put it in reverse doing about 5mph coming to a stop and it'll shift but feel awful.

Okay I wrote it up to share, OP sounds like you're only interested in the first anytime backup camera portion which can be accomplished with wire and a simple switch for a couple bucks.

    https://frugalfill.com/diy-14-toyota-anytime-backup-camera-and-front-camera-mods/

Added a post in this thread below for what I think will work on 2020-2021 models, if anyone tries it please let me know so I can add it to my website too! Thanks!

Has anyone figured out what 2 wires will activate the rear camera on the 20-21 models? The wiring and connectors are different from the previous versions. Thank you.

Searched for wiring diagrams and crossed what I did on my 17 above to the 2019+ wiring diagrams. Looks like you need pin 28 on the J202 connector for the reverse signal. You can supply your own key switched power or steal it from pin 19 on the J203 connector - similar to the 2017 solution in my link above except that was all on J135 connector pins 1/2 for older model. I haven't tested this so cannot confirm if it'll work with the CAN integrated head unit. I know it doesn't work on a 2017 Rav4 with 360/birdseye camera setup.

Thank you so very much, I'll hopefully be able to give it a try this weekend and get back to you with the results. I do have the nav system and non jbl, i don't know if that matters?

These pins appear to be the same for both JBL/non JBL. Confirm with connector and wire colors, should be yellow wire on the corner of the grey 28 pin and beige wire on the opposite corner of the white 30 pin. These connector pictures may appear "reversed" if you're looking into the connector from the wire side or the pin side so just triple check.

Not just no, but NO!!! It might work, but that is a BAD practice to get into! Putting any vehicle in Reverse while moving forward is like breathing underwater - DON'T TRY IT!

I tried it and the pin out is correct, it will activate the camera at any time, but, if the switch is on during startup multiple fault codes are set and won't automatically reset until you disconnect the battery.

Nice! Sorta, now just to figure out a way around making sure it's off at start up, need an engine running only power source for the relay.

I think I've got an idea , I'm going to put a diode in the circuit to stop it from sending power back through the shifter, maybe that will take care of it. I'll update you when once I've tried it.

The wiring diagram is correct for the 2020, Amazon camera button, https://www.amazon.com/Reverse-Back...ds=Camera+button+tundra&qid=1628696898&sr=8-3,
    this diode https://www.amazon.com/MCIGICM-15SQ...ld=1&keywords=diode+12v&qid=1628697311&sr=8-4,
    and some positaps.
Cut the yellow wire, attached the diode so that the signal from the shifter would pass through it, but the signal from the camera switch would only go to the head unit, tested it dozens of times in every way possible and it works perfectly.
    Thank you,!

Old thread I know but how exactly do you hook up the switch being that it has 4 wires? and is the diode needed?

I believe 1 or 2 wires are for lighting the switch up. The switch should have info on what each wire is for. The diode is to keep the back up lights from coming on when the camera is manually on. I've not read the whole thread but that's how I used a diode on mine.

Will any 1a diode work? I went to Amazon and there are lots of 1a variants.

I would think so. Probably the lower voltage ones like 20v not 50v or 1000v. I don't know if there's a difference though.
