I just flipped my 2019 Tundra to Carvana for $5300 more than I paid for it new 2 years ago.
I bought a 2021 SR5 with the upgrade package and for shits and giggle ran an offer request through Carvana…

I paid $39,800 +TTL 2 weeks ago and my Carvana offer was $45,200. It has 1100 miles on the clock.

What the hell is going on??

It’s crazy. If I didn’t love my Tundra so much I’d do it.

told my wife the same thing. Carvana offered me about $5k over what we paid for my Tundra 1.5 years ago. If I wouldn't have to settle for something else I'd trade it in right now.

They appreciate instead of depreciate… same as a mint old LBZ Duramax or old Cummins… it’s great! Maybe I should try it with my 2008 haha

There is a global semi-conductor (micro chips) shortage...vehicle manufacturers can’t get the chips they need to make vehicles...therefore new car inventory is extremely low...this is driving the increased value in the used car market.

For example, I have a 2019 Golf R...dealer just called me and asked to buy it for almost what I paid 2 years ago.

The shortage is affecting everything...appliances, computers, etc.

Although Toyota isn’t talking about it, I would expect this to delay the new Tundra launch as well as many other new vehicle launches.

The two Toyota lots I drive by frequently look barren as hell. I’d guess one of them has maybe 25% of their normal inventory. Bad time to be a car salesman.

I mean, you'll make a a profit for the 2019 but wouldn't you pay more for buying new with the increased value?

Not saying you can't do what you want. I've genuinely just been curious if there would be that much benefit doing so?

I had to take my Tacoma for an inspection a few months ago and the dealer (where I took it, a few miles from my house) called me if I wanted to sell it. I didn't ask how much, the Tacoma is paid off and figured if I did it, finding a new truck would be a hassle and cost me a lot more so didn't think there would be much (if any) value in doing so.

I'll be advertising mine very soon, it's too tempting an opportunity not to list it. The driver's door lock actuator is failing at 10k miles, so I figured I might as well get a number from a nearby dealer while it's in for repair. My wife objected at first, saying our fishing trip later this summer would be uncomfortable. I showed her the numbers and proved that hiring a bush pilot to personally fly her there would be cheaper per mile than her plan, so that was that.

I wonder why the perceived value of used cars & trucks increased by about $2,800 recently?

Just did the carvana offer cause I was curious. It offered me $50,693. I paid $48,500. Crazy to think in 2 years of ownership I've gained monetary value instead of the usual depreciation.

Car lots are emptying. Is production shortages this bad? We have hyperinflation in front of us possibly, not normal to see car lots this empty when so many are still unemployed

For me it’s been two weeks and 1,000 miles since I bought my 2021 and I could make a cool $3,000. I might just do it and wait until this nonsense settles down. 2021s are becoming scarce and I’m not a fan about what I’m hearing about the 2022s…

I am very concerned that these “chip shortages” are less supply/demand driven but instead hostile economic warefare. A very small number of countries have a spent 3 decades luring all of the production of these components from the rest of the world.....one of these countries was the only nation on earth to see gdp rise in 2020....i just find it very difficult to believe that in a year of massive reduction in aggregate demand, manufacturers run out of components.
    No conspiracies, however no coincidences.

I'm sure I know why. I had my truck serviced at the Toyota dealer yesterday & they only had one Extra-cab Tundra on the lot. 1 truck on the whole lot.
