Road Trip with almost 200K miles

I know that every truck is different but just curious, what is your thoughts of taking a high mileage vehicle on a 2,000 (round trip) road trip?

I am planning to drive from Wisconsin to Texas in July with my Truck to visit family. Truck runs great, been taking it all over Wisconsin fishing without an issue. Truck has 195K on it and during my ownership, I had the radiator and alternator replaced. Got the valley plate reseal due to a leak. No issue with the water pump but I'm planning to get that replace along with upper and lower hoses, serpentine belt, tensioner pulley, and spark plugs. Just for a piece of mind due to the heat down south.

I bought it used from a dealer about 3 years ago with 160K on it. Just trying to do some maintenance before hitting the road in July.

I quoted out a rental van/suv from $780- 1300 for a week. Figured mind as well put that towards maintenance and take the Tundra instead since it will need it in the future anyways.

 

If you have no issues driving it around everyday, then you shouldn’t driving for awhile on the highway. Anything can go wrong at any time though. Does you insurance have free towing or anything if something did happen? Will you be out of cell range anywhere?

 

My husband and I have been doing 3k mile trips to FL with a 24’ camper in tow every year (except this spring, we used my Tundra for the extra space) and hes got 300k on his 2003 Tundra. Zero issues.
He meticulously maintains his truck. If youre doing a once-over and maintenance before hand you shouldnt have any issue.
Saw that rental car bs on the news where people are renting u’haul vehicles instead because its cheaper. What a time to be alive.

 

No tow coverage and I don't know about cell coverage since it'll be the first time driving to Texas. Usually we take the plane but wife is not too comfortable with that yet.

 

That gives me a little piece of mind. I too also maintain my vehicles pretty well. I fix every squeak, rattle or thump that I hear. Just not sure how well the previous owner took care of it. The fun of buying it used.

 

In 2017 I took my new to me 2007 on a road trip when it had a little of 270,000 miles on it. No problems.

The truck is about to hit 300,000 and I am ready for another road trip in it.

No you SHOULDN'T have any worries. Do your standard (smart) pre-road trip checks. Adjust as necessary. Fill the tank. Drive away as you put on Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti. GO FOR IT.

We did a couple of trips from Houston to Orlando in a Sequoia that was pushing 200k at the time. I had the same worries, but there were no problems. My in laws are planning to take the same Sequoia to Tennessee in a month or so, and it has about 211k on it now.

Of course you never know, but my experiences were just fine.

 

I would have no reservations at all, as long as it runs good and no leaks. We just made a 1500 mile round trip to FL on our 07 with 178k and plan to do it again in June.

Hell we just took a 1000 mile round trip to Chicago a couple of weeks ago on our 06 Prius with 242k!

 

This is the reason I own Toyota vehicles. I shouldn't have to worry about if a vehicle will have an issue on a long distance road trip, at any point in time I am using it as a daily driver, towing or not towing. I am pretty spontaneous and will go on short notice long trips every year (just did a 2K trip in just under 48 hours), and if I can't count on my vehicle to be able to do that - then I need to flat out get rid of that vehicle.

 

260k on my '07 & had I the time & money, I'd take off for anywhere at the drop of a hat.

I road tripped in my 2008 Tundra from when I bought it all the way till I traded it in (at 297k miles). Never thought twice about it. Always stayed up on maintenance and made sure brakes and all that stuff were in good shape, but never hesitated to jump in and take it on a long drive.
