New Tundra - Few Questions

Hi Everyone,

after years of 4runners and tacomas I have finally grown up!

I just picked up a 2021 Tundra.

Looking to do suspension and tires sooner rather than later.

Thinking 2" frt 1.5 rear. Icon AAL plus icon shocks.



Questions are;

1. will there be maint required with the icons? I have only ever had OME and Bilsteins. I am looking for on road comfort plus ground clearance.

2. with a 2" lift do these trucks need UCA, diff drops or anything else to avoid any accelerated wear? avoiding prob is very important to me.

3. thinking 275/65/20 tires. 95% road driving, but daily short stints offroad (construction) sometimes in deep mud, snow or ice. Of course, gravel and dirt. Any suggestions?

1. I believe Icons are rebuildable but I don’t know the interval.
2. You should be good at 2 inches in front. 3 inches seems to be the tipping point.
3. Lots of choices for tires. So far I’m very happy with the Trail Grapplers on mine.

Just did a two inch lift on front and all that was required was an alignment.
Tires are really complicated as most want beefy knob jobs but when they see that they ride rough, make lots of noise with most of off road designs being horrible on ice and packed snow, they wish they would of gotten something less nasty looking.
There are lots of "All Terrains" that give the 90% of truckers that stay on asphalt most of the time good road manners in most environments.
Again your idea of quiet might be different than some others.
For me, if a tire can give me good rain manners, dry manners, snow / dirt manners as well as Ice, I'm happy.

1. i dont want to rebuild anything. I would like them to last 75k miles without needing replacement or rebuilding.
2. cool. good for alignment. i worry about CVs, difs, etc... still
3. i have used them all and over analyze the options. paralysis by analysis.

 

yep.... I have DD swampers, BFG AT, Cooper discovery, cooper ST Pro, Duratrac, wrangler, and i dont even know how many others. too many friggin choices! my recent KO2 shook my little tacoma like a rag doll!

 

1. The Icon service interval is 40,000 miles for on road driving only. The service interval decreases the more off road driving you do. Be sure to use some white lithium grease on the friction pads on the Icon AAL otherwise it will squeak over smaller bumps.

2. No you will only need an alignment.

3. 275/75r20s will probably clear without rubbing. I run 285/75r18 which measure 34.8” tall and you 275/65r18s will measure 34.3”. My tires just barely run on the swaybar at fill steering lock. You will have to remove the front mud flats definitely.

 

Great info. I want to avoid a service interval, this leads me towards something like OME, Bilstein, Eibach. How about the Fox? I dont want my truck to have downtime.

Fox has a service interval also but I don’t know it off the top of my head. I only knew the Icon service interval because I have their suspension. All shocks wear out eventually, most auto manufacturers recommend changing the shocks every 50,000 miles but most people blow right by that until the shocks blow out. I would recommend OME or Bilstein if you don’t want to worry about service, basically when the shock goes bad you just replace it. The shocks are “inexpensive” compared to an Icon, Fox, or King shock and perform very well. I had OME on my Tacoma and loved it, sometimes I wish I had gone that direction with my Tundra.

I am with you. I have put a ton of miles on OME for 4runners and tacomas. I wish they had a shorter lift option, don't need 3" on this truck.

 

Dobinsons and OME are good stuff, but do run higher lift wise than advertised. They last really well, have OME suspension on my 06 4runner- about 60k miles on it and it is still in great shape and drives and handles better than a new SUV.

I also am not into the whole rebuildable shocks thing- cost about $100 per shock to rebuild and your truck will be down for weeks unless you can find someone local or do it yourself. Not to mention that you have to tear it all apart, reinstall and new alignment. rebuild every 40-50k if street only, every 20k if you offroad. No thanks. Id rather just install new stuff that will last for 80k miles and replace it when it is done.

May want to look at the eibach pro truck suspension- about 2 inches lift and have read some good things about it. Toytec has some options as well, Aluma 2.5.

 

I agree with you 100%. I like the bilstein option, never had eibachs before. i like shopping headstrongoffroad.com. most things are out of stock everywhere right now though.

 

Narrowing it down to bilsteins (whenever they get back in stock). Plus SDHQ hidden winch mount and warn platinum.

Look at the Eibach Coilover 2.0 setup as well.
