Portable or Onboard air compressor

Hello Group I’m looking opinions on an air compressor. I’ve heard great things about the ARB unit, I’m just worried about dropping the coin and it not being great. I am a mechanic and mainly want to use it for occasional flat tires or Good Samaritan stuff.

I use a cheapy green slime portable compressor. If i aired up and down regularly I would get an ARB.

 

I use a TJM unit like this. It's a bit loud and comes with a crappy hose. But it seems to work well enough for occasional use, and for inflating rafts, and so on, and was not a bank breaker at all. Because it's portable it makes airing up the tires on the camper easy. I would probably not pick it if I were airing down/up regularly, but certainly OK for $100 or so.

 

I have had the arb unit for a handful of months and has been nothing short of great. Airs up my 295s really fast, install was a breeze. Only down side I have seen so far is the price point , I’d be interested to hear from a more long term user on the overal reliability of the unit , you also need to consider some sort of mount for it. I will also suggest a 90° elbow for ease of access

 

Have a portable viair that I nodded to use the trailer 7 pin instead of batter clamps. Works great and has a nice long cord and hose.

I’d get on board if I was going to do a tank or have airbags etc.

 

Same as above, works great, cost effective option vs the Arb onboard.

 

Im currently building a CO2 air system. Lot cheaper and faster than compressed air

 

I thought about a tank but I don’t want to deal with filling it and wouldn’t want to waste my tank filling up other cars lol

 

Hahaha, makes sense! I think I saw somewhere we’re someone is selling a direct bolt on for the ARB compressor

 

Which Viair did you use and do you mind sharing your mod..

I used a viair 400p, keep it in the cross bin of my diamond back cover.

i got the idea from here this morning, and promptly came home with a 7 pin in hand and spliced it in, keeping the battery clamps (in case another vehicle don’t have the 7 pin). Going to like this a lot better than raising the hood to use it every time. Thank you for sharing.

 

Viair 88. Fills up 285/33's. I had mine down to about 15 psi. Took about 30-40 for all four tires back up to 35. Enough to get me to a gas station. Cheap, not quite as fast as OBA, but easy enough. And I can transfer it to another car if I'm using something else for a trip.

 

Keep the battery clamps too because you can add a 7 pin socket and wire it to those clamps and use it elsewhere if you travel with someone who doesn’t have a 7 pin

 

Is this compressor faster than the typical cig lighter compressor that takes 15 min to add 15lbs of pressure?

 

Yea it's the 400p you can't use it with a cig lighter because it will smoke the fuse

Rated for 35's, says it can fill from 15 to 30 in 2 min45 sec but I haven't tested that personally as I don't have 35's yet. Once my new bumper gets on I'll be getting new wheels and tires

 

I kept the battery clamps on the compressor, that way I can use either/or. I spliced a wire in both negative and positive and soldered/ heat shrunk, then attached those to the 7 pin plug. So I have both.

 

Nice! I tossed my clamps and then later on I was like....hmmmm. Oh well lol
