I'm looking at retractable covers. What are the pros and cons? What brands are garbage? How much space do they take up in the bed? The last question is my biggest concern as I haul mountain bikes and dirt bikes a lot and don't want to lose a ton of bed space.

I've got a Pace Edwards Ultragroove Metal, allows you to put a rail system on top of the bed, like a bike rack. Can't speak to other brands but I'm happy with this one. The container takes up about a bed width x ~10" height x ~10" depth

    PROs
    • Secures content in the bed
    • Weather resistant - prevents most of the elements
    • This particular model fits with Decked
    • fairly easy to clean out drainage area
    • Compatible with Thule, Yakima, and Rhino racks
    • Retains rail utility

    CONs
    • Black cover gets very hot - not so much inside
    • Rear drainage
    • End caps and hose drain mounting points are flimsy
    • Takes up bed space.
    • Eats up payload
    • Not easy to remove
    • Expensive if not on sale
If you are hauling a dirtbike you may want to look at Diamond back, one of the models can sustain a significant amount of weight on top of the cover.

I went with the RetraxPRO XR. Biggest con is the price. Even with Black Friday sale prices, it was steep. I’m very happy with it though, and love that I can haul stuff on or over it. Adding Front Runner load bars is a good option for a RTT, but if you want to haul a kayak, extension ladder, or anything else long, I suggest the Yakima Overhaul HD rack instead.

If you have the money, go with Retrax. Top quality, easy open and easy close. You will lose about 1 feet of space upfront because of the canister. If you own a double cab, bike storage is not a problem. I am still able to put 4 adult mountain bikes in my truck bed after losing 1 feet of space because of the canister.

Ditto on the Retrax. I recently acquired one for my DC. Minimal water intrusion. Yes you do lose about 10" of bed space taken up by the canister but I can stow items under it so not a big deal. It's fairly easy to take off. As mentioned not cheap when new. Got mine off Craigslist.

Love my Retrax, you’re gonna lose a little bed space obviously.
    Pros...Easy to install. Looks great.

    Cons...price.

Nice looking truck, cover and rack. My cover, retrax pro XR, arrives later this week. Q about the Yakima rack- is that the HD and did you have to use the foot pad/kit they sell for like $100 more? Curious to know how it all works as thee are some posts out there about bending the t-rails with that setup. Thanks..

Thanks! Yes, this is the Overhaul HD. This one came with the adapters for the Retrax.
    I got it for $715 ($777 w/ tax).
:( I haven’t seen the posts about bending t-rails, but I don’t plan on putting a lot of weight on it. Max weight is around 300lbs I believe, but I plan on using it to mount some 16” lights with enough room between to still haul stuff.
Eventually using it to carry a cargo basket for when we go camping.

I got my RetraxOne used off Craigslist for $200. Crazy, but I can't utilize that Yakima setup without upgrading by Retrax side rails which is $$$. Fortunately I can get an Adarac that uses the stake bed holes for mounting points. I have to use a dremel on the existing Retrax side rails to make the Adarac work.20210502_153251.jpg 20210502_153514.jpg

My Retrax came off another 14. Not sure how old but at $200!.....immediately changed my plans on getting a SoftTopper. I jumped on that Craigslist listing. Jumped on it. Now I need to carry my kayaks. 1st world issues. Ha!. Here's a pic. I sealed up the tailgate. I get a bit of water intrusion. Minimal. I'm good with it.

It wasn't so much about the weight on top but what I think is people cranking the feet too tight as if they were pulling the bolt through the t rail from below. Just something to keep an eye open for.

I'm surprised that there aren't more posts here about the Pace Edwards...:notsure:. Reviews quite good too. When most folks inquire about retractable's, Retrax comes to mind first. Lots of advertising $ of course, but word of mouth experience is better IMHO. Can you post a pic of that Pace? Why did you get the Pace? A good deal? More affordable than a Retrax with similar features? From your description it seems to be quite similar to the Retrax.

Pace Edwards is part of Leer, the folks that make bed caps; not sure why these covers aren't more popular.

I wanted something compatible with rails and it was a toss up between Retrax vs Pace Edwards (Leer). A selling point for the Ultragroove is the locking latch inside the bed (accessible only by dropping the tail gate), I didn't want a key lock. I kept the bed rail system too; I don't remember if the Retrax lets you keep the bed rails.

They both looked good and were around the same price. I think I ended up getting the Ultragroove Metal directly from Pace Edwards, on a sale for about $1600 + Shipping. Amazon has it for about $2K. Luckily it is compatible with the Decked system but it is a tight fit. I did have to modify the front drainage system a bit to make the mounting points sturdier and allow for the attachment of larger diameter hoses.

I'll post picks later this week if I can't tomorrow. For now here are two links; Amazon says it isn't compatible with 2020s but it is:

Kuul. Thanks for the post. My Retrax utilizes my bed rails although you can get clamps from Retrax if you don't have the bed rails. Retractable covers are definitely a pricey upgrade but worthy of consideration. Heck, lots of upgrades can get quite pricey. It's nice to have options.

I’ve got the Truck Covers USA American Roll Cover. Had one on my 2008 DC and had nearly 280k on the truck with the cover. Yakima rails on the bed rails allow for cross bars (I had four bikes up on top of the bed on my 2008, then still had all the luggage inside the bed for a 2000 mile road trip).
The canister is only 8” (down from top of bed and back from the inside front of the bed) on the TCUSA and it’s an all metal canister. As others have said, the drains are still a weak point (on all of these covers) and a bit of a pain to clean off you’re in a high pine needle sort of area, but being aware of it helps.
The one bummer with the TCUSA cover is the Yakima HD rack won’t work with it because they don’t have bottom mounts for that profile. The other is that they don’t utilize the factory rails for mounting.

Hey @TheBlackPearl - where’d you source the Overhaul HD from? I’ve been building toward a similar PreLander setup, but can’t find the Yakima rack that cheap. Also, do you have the adapter numbers for the ReTraxOne XR? Thanks in advance and nice rig!

Thanks man! I actually got the Yakima towers from Amazon and the kit came with the adapters for the Retrax rail. It was one of those times when I kept going back in forth on do I really need it…but the price was too good and it was the last one in stock.
The crossbars were also a Amazon purchase but I really lucked out as they were an open box item described as “very good condition”…but figured I’d give it a try as Amazon’s return process is too convenient. Snagged those for $198 and to my surprise, the only damage was the box they came in. They literally looked brand new.
It was definitely a feel good purchase for everything…total $975
Obviously I caught a decent sale.

You are one lucky dog and Captain Sparrow would be proud of your adept deal cutting abilities! I’ll keep an eye on it. Totally hijacking the thread here, but I was going topside with a Smittybilt tent with the static 500#, 300# dynamic limits on the HD w/crossbars ... doesn’t sound like you’re doing that?

    Arrrrr, indeed!

I’ve tossed around the idea of using it for a tent, really want to, but don’t think I trust it…maybe with the optional side bars attached.
Not sure if that would make a difference in load capacity.

Sorry OP…Now back to your regularly scheduled program…

Sorry about that clumsy sidebar, OP; wanted to let you know, the RetraxOne XR is a great cover and I always get compliments, as I imagine others on here do. I do have one area of concern; After sliding the cover open with the bed full of cardboard, I’ve had smaller pieces slip in the underside into the retracting box and jam the cover open when I’ve hauled our weekly recycling. I also need to remember to wipe the top clear of leaves, twigs and debris during Autumn before sliding it open, otherwise, it all retracts right into the box and has the potential to clog up the water drain tubes.

Nice mod! To further the innuendo here, getting inside that box to clear out debris can be a challenging affair.
