2021 F150 Adding Onboard Scales

Got to hand it to Ford. I'm not a fan, but they are pretty innovative with their features:

Another feature/sales gimmick to break, and it's still a Ford....I don't care what you add to it lol.

What they fail to disclose is the part where the Ford won’t start if you go overweight.

This is not due to the same reason the Ford wouldn’t start to begin with.

 

Fords just suck period!! My neighbor has one.....it shuts off while he's driving.

 

This is the same redundant feature as the trailer backup assist.

if you don’t know what you’re doing or towing, you probably shouldn’t be towing.

 

I guess it's a kinda cool idea.
But honestly, I dont think its too practical for me.

 

The biggest thing about Ford innovating is that they push the other manufacturers to keep up. Yeah, they can't build anything reliable, and that is a huge letdown, but they pioneer tech that might actually be useful. Sure this gadget isn't something I need, but their trucks with generators in the back have proved useful to contractors and folks who have had power outages. Imagine if Toyota were to take the best ideas and bring Japanese engineering to them? I think we'd be all over it.

I can just see the Ford forum complaints now:

“My bed is empty and it says I’m over payload!”

“The dealer wanted $500 to zero out the scales!”

“These things are way off from certified scale tickets!”

 

Another gadget that can be used against the owner to void the warranty or in a law suit or that can break. No thanks.

 

You realize you can’t do this on here right? You have now awoken every grumpy old forum member to chime in with “I’ll take reliability over ________” hahaha

 

Ha! Not trying to get people fired up, but I’ve read a lot of threads in the forum about the relatively low payload of the Tundra and the concerns with that especially when towing. I think this type of feature could be useful, especially if you are pushing your payload limits (and you care about that sort of thing).

On the other hand, some excellent points were brought up here. Does it keep records of the payload being over the limit? Will there be a constant audible/visual alert or will the truck not start if over the limit? Will hauling over the limit void your warranty? All good points that I didn’t think of when I first saw what looks to be an interesting new feature.

 

Yeah there's no way in HELL that I'd own one of these trucks now, if they include scales. That may not be why they're installing them, but we all know Fords aren't the most reliable trucks (based solely on increased warranty claims). As such, I pretty much GUARANTEE that in no time flat they'll be leveraging the use of those scales as a way to reduce warranty claim payouts and the like.

 

More crap to break and will cost a small fortune to fix

 

I realize I am beating a dead horse here......BUT it stands to reason that Ford would have many many more warranty claims each year simply due to the volume that they’re selling. That is all.....back to your regularly scheduled programming

I think it's pretty cool, I've never weighed anything I've towed and always completely shoot in the dark (an educated shot I guess) that my weight distribution is correct. Sure I could go weigh my trailer, but doing that every single time I change configuration? Pass. I think it'd be a super nifty feature. Still won't buy a F150 though

 

Sure nice they’re coming up with all these neat ideas, but it won’t be available on any of their truck for a while due to the global chip shortage....think they need to focus on that first before focusing on gadgets and such. Our local Ford dealer lots are looking pretty vacant this year...
