Hey all, nice to see an active forum for Tundras. I picked up a used one owner 2006 double cab limited, now I need to make it reliable and practical as if 60 & 70 year old geezers own it (yep that’s us) and less embarrassing to drive.

I have no idea why the previous owner let the wheels get to a rusted looking state with peeling plate metal but that’s what they look like. I’m looking for some OEM/original gen 1 limited wheels (ie, 17 inch with 6 lug pattern) that don’t look like they died from curb rash if anyone has some take offs.

I’m going for reliability and practicality in my choice of an older Toyota truck, it doesn’t hurt that it still looks good for it’s age (except for the wheels, OMG!). I know it won’t get good fuel economy but we’ve got hybrid SUVs from Toyota & Lexus for that. This is my 9th Toyota product so I’m biased towards the brand. My projects will be to make it even more reliable and practical, if it looks better as a coincidence that will be serendipitous. Except for the wheels, first project, won’t make it run better but makes it less embarrassing to be seen in.

See you in the forums ...

    It's good
Why buy OEM when these are 3-4 pounds lighter cheaper new?

Welcome. I’m new too. Congrats on the new/old Tundra. Those 4.7s are great engines. You didn’t say how many miles or mention prior maintenance, so right out of the gate I’m thinking timing belt, water pump, anything else your trusted mechanic thinks is good to replace while he’s in there. I had a 2000 that decided to drop its transmission on I5 in Portland—super not fun, so to avoid that kind of surprise might want a thorough evaluation of that system. My understanding is that the 1st gen transmissions are great but towing is hard on them, so if your prior owner pulled stuff, an inspection would be high on my list. And fresh oil. This site has a ton of technical help so if you have something specific, try a search and you’ll probably get several hits.

Good ideas, thanks. On the day after its arrival it’s in the shop getting checked over and brakes done. Miles are 130k so I’ll have some things to check for sure. Next stop will be the dealer who will update it for recalls & oil change.

Unfortunately I don’t have any records other than what Toyota service might have so I’ll see if anything shows up there. The first thing I checked on it was the air filter which was almost new which is puzzling. Also the previous owner left a box with new rotors & pads locked in the bed, they are going on today. So if the previous owner was on top of the air filter & brake parts why did they let the wheels fall apart? Unless someone knows the previous owner from Northern Virginia I guess it will remain a mystery. For my part I’ll take nothing for granted & get everything checked out.

I’ve also got a TPMS mystery to solve. At least one tire is low or missing a sensor according to the light on the dash. Hopefully when I get some wheels & switch them out I can get the TPMS issue cleared up.

Thanks, I can get OEM wheels delivered for about $700, they might be heavier but does that matter on a multi-ton truck? What is the delivered price for these BTW? They look great, not quite as good as OEM lol

If you can get OEM at that price, sweet. These are Method 701s, 200/ea. I don't think the weight is a big deal unless it becomes significant, I certainly didn't want to go heavier like some wheels out there. Welcome aboard!

The TPMS issue is likely the battery in the sensor. When one of mine went out, I bit the bullet and replaced all 5.
