Hello all, this is my first post on the site. Last May (2020) I traded in my 2012 Tacoma and bought my first new vehicle, a 2020 Tundra TRD off-road in voodoo blue. I was very happy finding the exact configuration I was looking for and have been overall happy with the truck. Well now after about a year of ownership I am noticing a lack of pant and frame quality. I just so happened to crawl under the truck to grab a bolt I dropped and noticed a couple large-ish rust spots on the frame, they're both about the size of 2-3 quarters shown in pic below. Upon further inspection I noticed another large surface rust patch on the frame in the front drivers side wheel well. I have owned several older trucks, so I did what I normally do in this situation, wire wheel off the rust and spray the frame to prevent further rust. While doing this I also noticed tons of small paint chips on all 4 doors that are starting to rust (picture below). I am very worried this condition is only going to get worse. The truck only has about 8k miles on it and just got done with its first salty new England winter. My Tacoma never even had a patch of rust that big after 8 years and no noticeable paint chips. So I guess my questions are: Is this about the same surface rust as everyone in the salt belt has been seeing after 1 winter? Why did my tacoma hold up so much better under the same conditions for years? What can I do about the paint situation? Is there dealership assistance available for the paint? This is my first new vehicle purchase and I love the voodoo blue, so it hurts to see this condition. I went a little wild with the warranty and got 7 years 100k bumper to bumper, but I assume this does not cover paint. Thank you.

    As I found the frame:

After wire wheel to eliminate the rust:

Re-spray black (not my best spray job Ill admit):

Paint chips, present on all 4 doors mostly, a few here and there on the bed. A few here and there on the front bumper and hood. The doors are really peppered though:

I'm not really concerned with the frame, just wondering what people have seen. I am going to clean up that excess/drippage though. I'm more concerned with the paint chips leading to brown rust spots all over my doors.

Get the truck oil under coated, literally the first thing I did with my 2020. I’m also salty (pun intended) that you got the exact truck configuration I wanted.

Yes, absolutely look into oil spray, Woolwax or Fluid Film treatment. It’ll save your undercarriage from rusting to pieces in those salty winter months.

Are you sure the “rust chips” on your doors aren’t embedded brake dust deposits? I also bought a 2020 last year and noticed this on all my doors this spring. If thats what it is an iron remover treatment will take care of it.

I would suggest you pull the Toyota maintenance records online, and there may be a possibility it has visited the body shop... someone probably hit something which required work..

VERY happy with the Woolwax coating I did on my 18’- except for when working under truck -running wiring for auto-open tailgate and bed lights - got covered in oil but hey it’s all worth it

I really doubt it has been to a body shop before, I bought it brand new off the lot with 27 miles on it.

I have been thinking about an undercarriage oil treatment. I will definitely have that done before next winter.

I'm not sure on the door chips, the brake filings would make more sense, being along the length of the tuck behind the front wheel. I didnt even think of that, was really wondering how I have so many rock chips on the side of the vehicle.

The rust spots your seeing is probably rail dust from transporting. It embeds into the paint and can be a pain to remove.

Have you done an initial deep clean on the truck?
Meaning wash it, try bug and tar remover, Iron-x, clay bar, 2-step wax on the spots? trial hand buffing or very light polish to see if "Pepper spots"
Those dark spots look like tar to me, but hard to tell from the photo.
I would try some of those options first.
If the spots are still there I would take it to a reputable body shop for a outside opinion.
Then circle back to the dealer and voice your concern once you've confirmed above options are not successful.

Welp... I got mine with 15 miles on the odo and left the body shop at some point before I purchased it... if its below 500 they don't have to tell you and charge you full price

I have not done a deep clean. I am new to any real methods of cleaning, for my tacoma and ranger before that I jut went through the car wash to remove salt in the winter, and every few weeks in the summer. So far you all have provided very good information. I have a couple friends that work in detailing, Ill have to ask them for opinions. I just assumed they were rock chips, but hearing about other potential causes combined with the location makes me think I'm wrong on that.

That's interesting, I did not know there was a minimum mile threshold for a disclosure. Not really sure what kind of accident or bodywork would result in the condition I am seeing though.

I didn't either until years down the line when I pulled their records... and its $500 dollars not miles.. my stealership owned the body shop on site.. I did Have paint issues, door alignment issues, dash and door panel rubbing issues, driver seat issues as well as electrical issues... I chalked it up as 1st gen issues till I pulled the records.

AS far as rock chips on the sides, I believe a good set of running boards, step rails will help

The black dots in the last picture seem like tar, it's usually from freshly paved roads. Anything that looks like rust sports are most likely rail dust. Rail dust is more visible on light colors cars. It has been discussed many times here and in different threads. here is one.

Don’t be so sure... there’s plenty of brand new cars with body work. You think they manage they ship those things all over the world and none of them ever get dinged up?

rock chips on the sides can be from landscapers taking care of the grass around the lot or streets and you may not even think about it. Food for thought.

Clay bar will get rail dust out, it's labor intensive, but very doable with great results.

Can vouch for that. Use CG de-con or Iron-X though. If you clay bar, you may be scratching paint.
