RECALL/ FUEL SMELL AFTER REPAIRS MADE

I have a 2019 Tundra with only 16,000 miles on it. I received a recall notice for a fuel pump problem. When I took it to the dealer he advised me they would have to drop the fuel tank to do repairs. At that time I also was having a problem with the remote start. After having the truck for 4 days I got it back. I live out in the country and about 25 miles from the dealer, when I was almost home I started to notice the smell of gas, NOT exhaust fumes, actual gas fumes. Any suggestions on what they did or did not do that may have caused this? When I got home I checked under the hood but did not smell anything. There was however a slight small around the gas cap, I took off the gas cap and put back on. But the smell continues, I do not see a leak under the truck? Any suggestions on what else this could be?

 

I would recommend checking that all the connections to the tank were reinstalled. The filler hose connection is on the rear of the tank. Since you did not have any issues driving, i'm assuming the fuel feed and return hoses were properly installed. Have you tried putting any gas in and if so, were there any leaks? I've read that some dealers forget to reattach the gas fill hose. Also, if you park in an enclosed garage, i would not put the truck in until you get this issue resolved.

 

Both my Tundra and my wife’s Highlander had the gas smell after the fuel pump recall was done. The smell went away after a couple days. We keep our vehicles in the garage so were able to leave the windows down overnight.

If it’s still going on I’d definitely take it back to the dealership for a check.

If that smell isn't gone by tomorrow I would be going back to the dealership. I also wouldn't park that inside a garage until the issue is resolved.

Ugh... which gamble to take? Fuel pump quitting at an inopportune time, or Toyota service tech screwing up my Tundra (and/or my 4R)? One of these instances seems to occur at a higher rate than the other...

 

That happened to me,mine is a 2008,my fuel gauge quit working after a year,I had less than 15k miles.Thats serious in my opinion because fumes ignite first.They dropped my tank,and I went across the street to fill up because they had emptied my tank to drop it, and when I immediately took it from the gas station back over to the dealer they called me the next day and told me the gasket had been pinched. That's just my experience. Come to find out something had chewed through my wire harness, they said a rodent of some sort somehow got into my dash and chewed a bunch of wires in my harness, they replaced the whole harness under warranty. I'm assuming the pinched gasket is the gasket between the tank and cap that goes on top of the tank after the fuel pump has been lowered in.Jerry

 

There is a thin breather hose nearby the filler hose that needs to be disconnected when dropping the tank. both are located at the rear of the tank, near the front side of your rear wheel well. I'd do a quick visual check on both so see if that's the issue, as it will take less than a minute. filler tube connects at the tank on its rear/driver side, and is a phillips head worm clamp (or 10mm). Breather tube doesnt disconnect at tank, its connection is further up the wheel well on the way to the gascap/door, in between your front side leaf spring and the fiberglass. if you find an open connection in that area with no hose attached, then the breather line was probable left laying on top of the tank before tankstraps were fastened and may be inaccessible.

I had my fuel pump recall completed today. There is no gasoline smell whatsoever, thank goodness. But there is a “unique” odor coming from the new TRD Dual Exhaust (with black chrome tips) I had them install after the recall work was done. Love the sound…and the look!

 

Odor and smoke are perfectly normal for a brand new TRD dual. I installed mine at ~1000 miles and had this.

^video is great but note that flex fuel trucks will have a slightly different pump assembly with an additional fuel line connection. For anyone lurking in the future that doesn't want to accidently rip it off while dropping the tank like I almost did.

 

I also had that smell but went away within 2 days

 

After mine was done I had the same thing.....cracked the windows and it was gone. But beware, some of the replacement pumps are defective, lost all of the safety features, cruise control, trade control yesterday check engine light came on, traction control gone.....they think it has to to with the new pump
