ENGINE CODE P0430 DIAGNOSTIC HELP

Since i bought this truck i have had the same engine code:

P0430 ( Catalyst system below thresh hold bank 2)

I have patched and fixed all of my exhaust leaks.

I took out my bank 2 02 sensor which looked very clean and compared my ohms to the front 02 sensor they were the same .

So now i do believe it is my catalytic converter but i don't understand how to read these charts from my scanner. Can anyone confirm from the photos that it is my Cat?

The first 2 photos are from idle

The next 2 are driving around a small neighborhood slow 35km

Have you tried replacing the rear O2 sensor?

or even removing it from the exhaust stream and letting it dangle in clean air, clear the code and do a test drive?

 

Have you tried swapping your rear sensor from passenger to driver side to see if the code goes with it? I understand you've compared ohms and don't visually see a problem but I would try that before messing with the cats.

 

I would just get the same code since they are both the rear. Unfortunately i cant swap them front to rear to see if I would get the p0420 if it's the front bank.

 

Your upstream sensor is an A/F sensor. The ECM compares the A/F sensor and 02 sensor readings to determine CAT function. One or both could be giving false readings. Swap both pairs of sensors side to side and your code will switch banks if it's a sensor problem.

Hey guys here is the update.

Went to swap the rear o2 sensors but they were different lengths and could reach. After re wiring i was able to run the test and my code went from

P0430 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)

P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

So it is a faulty 02 sensor! thanks for the advise everyone

 

I got the same code on mine a few days ago. The day after I bought it from a local dealer. Cat converter. It's getting replaced today. Dealer's covering it!

 

Yeah you got lucky since you just bought it. Alot of mechanics will tell you that you have a had cat when really it's just the 02 sensor and you get charged for both

 

New to the forum, had my tundra since 2006, this is the first trouble I have had after 176,000 miles. I read through the three here, and I'm having an issue that I can't seem to figure out, and neither can my local Toyota dealership.

I replaced my Bank 1, Sensor 2, O2 sensor, and cleared all codes. The check engine light came back on after about 50 or so miles. I took it to my local dealership, and they replaced both rear sensors with OEM O2 sensors. After about 50 miles of driving, the light came back on. In all cases, I received an error code P0138. Changed out the O2 sensor again, new gas cap, cleaned the MAF, still getting the error code. I need to get my smog certificate but won't pass until I get his fixed. Does anyone have any ideas?

 

Hey guys. I was driving today. The check engine came on. I went to orielly to check. The obd2 read P0430 . Should I change the o2 sensor if so which one?

I know my car has a exhaust leak. It ticks when I gas it. And I sprayed some soap and water on area where the muffler pipes connect before the cat on passanger side. One of the bolts is missing. Could this be the problem? If so shouldn't have the cel come on before?

As mentioned by @PCJ and @Darkness a few posts up, swap the 2 rears with each other. Your code mentions Bank 2....Bank 1 is driver side and Bank 2 is passenger. If after swap the code changes to P0420, that’s telling you the rear sensor on passenger side was indeed bad. Personally would change both rears if indeed one is bad !

 

Seems you have the same Code as the OP. Try replacing the o2 Sensor ($50 Denso Store).

Also, re-bolt those bad areas if you can as its not good having leaks ahead of the Cats.

 

I just fixed the P0430 code last week on my truck. Replaced the passenger side O2 sensor with a sensor unit from rockauto. The old one was in pretty bad shape and corroded into the pipe. About 500 miles so far and the light hasn’t returned, fingers crossed.

Had a hell of a time removing these without damaging the threads

 

Used an Oscillation Cutter with High Dolla Carbide Teeth to score a slot and then punch the nuts off with chisel. Note the rust gnar gnar on the gasket. Did all 4 sensors at the same time and the 2 rears were at Zero Ohms when tested. The front 2 sensors were 6years old aftermarket Bosch and out of spec. The fronts sensors are on their 3rd replacement (Originals->Recalled->Bosch->and now Denso Sweetness).

 

Do you know what the nut is? I went to pick n pull grabbed a nut from a tundra but it doesn't fit mine.

 

M8 x 1.25 for the rear O2 sensor nuts

Even though it's a major OEM supplier for most high end Euro brands (Mercedes, Volvo, BMW, etc.) Bosch quality is nowhere near that of Toyota/Denso OEM parts. Toyota is recognized in the industry as having the highest quality parts.

 

That tick is more than likely a cracked exhaust manifold. It's a know issue on many trucks.

 

Only reason they were on there was because Friendly High Dolla Service Station put them on about 8-10 years ago. Guessing because most shops don’t do Toyota Parts because of $$$ of having to go through Stealer. Plus NAPA delivers etc.

 

So I did today swap the two back ones. Went to oriellys ,checked and the same code popped up. Was I supposed to clear the code before and drive it till the code pops back up?

 

Indeed....clear codes, drive until Check Engine light comes on, read code and report back.

 

Its been over 150miles ive driven it..light has not come back on?

Been over 250 miles check engine light hasnt came back after swapping the two back o2 sensors with eachother.

Should i go smog or just put in a new o2 Sensor first?. had the p0430code
