All valid points. I remember doing work for the guy who started diesel bros back before it was much more than him flipping cars. He had a diesel conversion land rover that I drove a bit when I did some bumpers, roof rack, and sliders on. That thing was very fun. I bet it was great just chugging around off road

I do 10k oil change intervals on all of my vehicles. For the last 15 years. My oil is good for 15k and my filter for 20k. Hell, I'm leaving money on the table!!

P.S. - none of my vehicles consume any significant oil.
Also P.S. - your vehicle will consume half as much oil at 5k intervals. It's science.
last P.S. I swear - you can't go wrong with more frequent oil changes. Fresh oil is best. I agree that 5k oil changes are great.

oh i did 20k OCI on the corolla. never burned oil. but it was all highway driving. the issue stems from the modern cars using 0w-20 (0w-16 now) and people doing 10k miles over a full year with short trips. the rings are seizing up.

How does an oil change remedy this?

Over the 10k the oil breaks down to the same extent as if I went 30k. It’s the breaking down of the oil that causes this. More frequently driven cold motors will wear the oil faster than something like the corolla goes through with its 2hr plus drives every day

most of the excessive burning cars are older folks who have lower mileage. Correlation points to this being an issue

Maybe if you're using conventional oil ;)

"Unlike synthetic blends or conventional oils, fully synthetic oils won't break down and will protect your engine for longer."

"Most synthetic oils are rated to last between 10,000 to 15,000 miles, or six months to a year. Manufacturer recommended ratings are typically applied to "normal driving," and don’t reflect severe driving conditions that may require more frequent oil changes."

Fully synthetic is all that’s used on the new cars. It’s not so much the mileage they’re going to. It’s how they’re getting to the mileage. ALOT of people fall under “severe” duty use case if they read their manual which would put them at the 5k OCI.

that being said the engines that burn oil are always able to be cured of this... but it involves beating the absolute piss out of the motor

Synthetic oil doesn't break down and sludge up like conventional oil, but it absolutely still gets dirty. Those conditions would definitely necessitate more frequent oil changes. I don't live on a dirt road. Most of our driving is streets and interstates. Light duty for us.

Yea it’s an odd issue that only really affects the 4 cylinders these days. But the holes for ring expansion are what get clogged up. So the rings in turn effecting sized causing the oil burning issue. The people who put a ton of miles on the cars 0 issues, the people who do the 5k oci? 0 issues. The people doing 10-15k a year driving around locally? Burn like 1 quart every 1k miles (which is technically deemed OK.) there are a few cases of 12-14 Camry 2.5a burning 1 quart every 500 miles though.

I do 3k in my GTI on synthetic. That oil comes out black as hell. It is mostly for short range driving and hits 22psi often so plenty of blowby. I only run Liquimoly in that car too, expensive German stuff.

Most of my driving is on the weekend. I’m lucky if I do 20-25 miles during the week with work only 5 miles away. Engine only begins to warm up by the time I pull into the front gate. Needless to say, but I change twice a year on 5k intervals. Oil doesn’t really get dirty until 4K. I do get the mayonnaise condensate on the underside of the oil cap that’s over an inch thick in the winter time though.

Prius is a bland appliance at best, but I got one used. Holds a ton, just works. You can get one under $5k, 45mpg, small enough to park, big enough my head & shoulders aren't rubbing the window.
I had to change a cell in the hybrid battery. Actually, if you have an engine crane it's wicked easy - otherwise it's kinda heavy getting that pack flipped to work on. New cell cost me $40. Really is a good run into town for the shopping car, or running about town. Great in the snow with those skinny tires.
Dunno why everyone says they're not sporty. 60 on the S's of the exit ramp...
    I did have to have a little fun with 'typical' buyers of Prii;

No - i wish I had. That battery pack comes out as one unit & it's kinda heavy & want's to fall into the spare tire well, & all the edges are sharp & want to scratch up the car & tear your skin.

The few I drove around 2005/06 seemed pretty fast. At least off the line. My favorite new vehicles to drive from that time period were the tundras (go figure) and the cummins. The manual cummins were fun because you couldn't shift fast enough. Powerband like a two stroke.

I'm with you. A bland appliance, but it comes with some great utility. I still laugh when I see one with an HK or Glock sticker or something. Good stuff.

This product may not exist, but if it does one of you all surely knows where to get them.

    20210418_222738.jpg

I'd like to find a 180° flat blade terminal. Something that would let me run jumper wires with ease. (For the hot leg of switch. Black wire.)

Like a flat blade "T" (pink would be another wire insertion point.)

There enough room to use something like this and just two of the flag connectors you have now?

I'm not sure there's enough headroom in the compartment. I know I had to bend the other two heat shrinked connectors down so they'd fit, and allow me to close the door.

I heat shrinked them with marine shrink (glue inside tube) because I knew I had to bend them. I couldn't find my 90° connectors.

Couldn’t you just get a larger flag terminal and then stick two wires in the same end, one being a tail for your jumper? Does it have to come out the other side and form a T? If so; maybe drill a hole on the other end of the insulation to fit it in?

:homer: D'oh. Here you come again with the simple solution I over look.

Doesn't have to be a T. Just thought it would look cleaner is all.

That’s good on you for taking pride, I totally get it and know exactly where your coming from(I’d always see “big shop” installs, that looked like absolute dog shit, so as a diyer I always strive to be better than the boobs that are out there claiming to be Pros)

My wife drove home her first v8 vehicle last night. I said "this vehicle will get all of that 12 mpg if you continue to drive like that" she just smiled and explained she was still getting used to the way it accelerates.

Fair enough considering her MB actually had a good deal of bottom end power. We are now at two 6'ers and two 8's!
