Synthetic Oil Change

I am a new owner of a 2014 Tundra. With that being said, I understand the maintenance schedule for changing the oil is at 10,000 miles. I realize that the Tundra is using synthetic oil, but how many of you wait until that kind of mileage. What are the other owner doing ? Most Tundra owners are either towing or hauling. It's not built for the Sunday School or joy riding.

 

My Toyota Care booklet says I get a free oil change every 5K. That is my limit on how far I will go. I changed it at 1500 miles the other week just because...

I just got my Toyota care reminder card in the mail yesterday. So it states 6 months or 5k miles. I will hit 6 months in June with over 1k miles. Being that I don't have many miles on the truck should I go ahead & do my 1st service at the 6 month mark (change oil, rotate tires, check fluids etc..)?

 

I say absolutely. You paid for the maintenance in the cost of the truck. If you don't drive it that often, do it on the 6 month schedule and you'll get 4 "free" oil changes. New oil never hurt anything. Stick it to them...

 

I used the regularly scheduled maintenance up to 75 thousand miles and changed the oil every 5,000. Once the free maintenance contract was over, I changed to synthetic oil and still change it every 5,000 miles. My truck has 167,475 miles on it as of this morning. No issues whatsoever. Runs as smooth as it did when it left the dealer lot.

 

From what I can tell, most Tundra owners will change the oil at the 5,000 mile mark.... I am thinking this is cheap insurance and peace of mind to avoid issues. For what I paid for my Tundra, a $70 oil change is almost the cost of a fill up !! The 10,000 mile oil change in their maintenance schedule, I feel is Not looking out for their customers !

 

I always do my own oil change in my garage. I have it down to about 25-30 minutes. I've been putting full synthetic oil myself, that way I know for sure what I am putting down in my engine. Plus, its a whole lot cheaper than paying 70 dollars for an oil change ! I look for specials on full synthetic oils, and if you look, you can get 6 quarts of oil and a good filter for less then 35 dollars. The most I have paid is around 38 dollars, because of the extra quart I have to buy to top the oil off.

 

Just got an letter in the mail from Toyota the other day offering to extend the 'free' maintenance through the 45K mark for $299. I'll probably take them up on it when the time for the 30K service comes up. Even when I do eventually get around to doing my own oil changes, it'll be strictly by the OM sked.

 

I had some issues with one of the local Toyota dealerships with my wife's Camry.
Seem the dealership didn't like to spend money on Toyota care and they were short cutting the service. My first indication wasn't good enough for me to keep an eye on things. I went to pick up her car and asked why they hadn't rotated tires. They claimed they had. I told the manager if he looked at the paper work I had asked they replace a missing valve cap on the driver front tire. Well the driver front tire was still missing the cap.
Well after the two years were up I took her car to a shop that changes all my work vehicles. That oil change cost me over $200.00. It seems they check everything but add or change nothing. All the filters were plugged and all fluids were low. The oil was black and I can't say if it was changed. A friend of mine found the same issues with his Tacoma at the same location. When I complained they sent me gift cards for 2 free oil changes. 9like that would happen) On my Tacoma I took it to a different dealer and after every service before I drove off the lot I opened the hood and checked the oil to be sure it was clean and I marked the tires so I knew they were getting rotated.
That was another issue on the wife's car the tires wore out by 25K and the dealer said it was normal. I asked three different tire shops to look at it they said they wore due to lack of rotation and I should have gotten 50k out of the tires that came with the car.

Just keep an eye on them.

I change my own oil on my personal vehicles now that Toyota care is done.

 

Dealer in my town is worst i know of 5 engine failures as the dealer failed to put enough oil in the case for the engine. All engines seized up most i know two the transmissions has to be rebuild when the engine locked up at highway speeds.

 

Yeah the dealer I use now does great work so far. I have checked everything they have done and so far they haven't missed a thing.

 

My step daughter keeps taking the Camry we gave her to the dealership that does crappy work and when we gave her the car we told her it needed rear struts. One strut was leaking oil all down the outside and they told her the struts were fine. I got tired of telling her so some day when the struts fall off she will believe me.

 

Don't know that I'll take Toyota up on their "free 24k service" Need to drive 30 miles round trip to the dealer. Don't really want them washing my truck, rotate my own tires as I have a torque wrench (don't use an impact gun), and I have 3 cases of Mobil 1 in the shop from the sale at Costco. So all it saves me is the cost of a filter and I can do it myself faster than going to the dealer and waiting....

 

Purchased my 2016 Tundra used with 18K miles. I have done M1 & Filter every 5K miles and currently have 72K miles on the truck. I did this with my Tacoma and sold that with 236K miles and the engine was still just like new.

 

Got my '16 Tundra with 9800 miles on it 2 years ago. I changed it every 5k until I hit 50k and now have moved to 10k intervals. I check the oil often and it still looks very light brown and in good condition. I've been torn with it but it seems fine and have had no issues with the truck. I change it every 10k on my wife's '14 Highlander too.

I drive about 4k miles per month so going back to the 5k intervals would be a little more costly to me.

 

10-12k here never a problem with 2 camries and 2 tundies

 

nothing wrong with an impact as long as you start them by hand first then hit with the impact and follow up with torque wrench. That is what I do on my boat trailer when I have to do axle maintenance. I let Discount tire rotate mine. It is free. As far as oil changes I have no problem with 10k miles on today's synthetic oils.

 

If you just cruising, don't haul or tow 10k is fine. I own a tacoma b4 been doing my own oil change since new. hate the dealer, 1hour for tire rotation, another hour for oil change. i could do that at my comfortable home drinking beer in 30 min flat.

 

I have a FFV and do my own engine oil changes. Have since I drove it off the lot. NOOOOOOO touchy-touchy my truck by others. I run Mobil 1 full synthetic 0W20 and change it every...........every............every.............wait for it.......10,000 miles. Blackstone Labs reports it is all really good.

 

I would like to know the oil change interval on the first million mile tundra.

I’ve always changed mine at 5k with mobile 1 full synthetic.

With my 99 Tacoma 3RZ I’ve gone 7500 a handful of times. Even at 245k miles the engine still runs like a top and compression is still at less than 10% difference from spec.

 

Been changing mine every 5k. Used the Toyota care for the first time ever letting a dealer do services on my car and regret it. Lost some of the pieces associated with the skid plate, way over torqued the oil filter to the point I broke it getting it off myself, and ended up keying my driver’s side door on the last oil change. Happy to be doing it myself now. Haha. I used Mobil 1 EP every 5k miles. Cheap insurance as far as I’m concerned.

I’d rather “waste” $40 on an oil change sooner than have my engine eat itself up because I was too lazy to do it.

 

Both my last 2018 that was totalled and my current 2018 call for 10,000 miles oil changes. I change at 5,000 miles. I do take it to the dealer and will as long as it's in warranty and it never fails that they will come out and remind me that Toyota says 10,000 mile changes. I just remind them that I bought the truck and future problems outside of warranty will be my problem....not Toyotas so I could care less what Toyota says. I check behind them and they always do the change.
