When you can’t find that pesky oil leak.....

I was surprised to find this out. I had an oil leak around the oil filter housing.
I could not pin point it. Thought it might be the oil pan, maybe the oil filter.
Perhaps the oil pressure sender.
NOPE to all that. It turned out the the the “figure 8” O ring. PN 15692. I bought it at the Toyota
Dealer. I asked him how many he has ever sold. He said I was the only person to
Order that part. Any way, after months of chasing oil spots, it was that O-ring.
Bone dry under there now.

Oil filter housing gasket I have done many 100s on GM trucks very common leak but never done one on a tundra

 

Hmmm...I've been getting 1-2 drops from time to time on the garage floor under the oil filter, I'll have to check this out!

 

According to the parts salesperson at Toyota, not a common part.
It’s buried enough to not see the actual leakage. I really didn’t know if
mine was leaking there. The oil would travel along the oil pan rail.
I thought it was something else till I pulled the parts catalog.
That is where I found the “double barrel shotgun” O’ring. Sure enough,
That cured the leak.

 

How difficult was it to replace? I can't even picture where that is from the diagram.

 

It wasn’t hard to replace. It’s the flange that mounts to the engine block.
Gotta move some stuff out of the way.

 

Gotta be lower front driver's side of the engine in front of the motor mount where the oil filter is mounted.

 

If you get it at the Lexus stealership it will be cheaper than the Toyota stealership... it was 1.61 at Lexus, and 5.80 at Toyota parts counter.. if you get it online in Toyota is. 69 cents... same figure 8 gasket part number.. I got mine at Lexus, then I forgot to remove it from my Toyota cart and bought it again with other parts cuz I'm a dummy...

 

Is your truck a v6? I tried that part number for the V8 and didn't get anything. Here's the V8 diagram

Your picture is not of the V8, mine is.
Perhaps my supplied part number is incorrect.

 

Your number is correct sort of...McGregor shows it as 15692-50020 and only fits 2000-2009 Tundras

I intended to show where my Tundra oil leak was coming from.
I didn’t cross reference the part number.
I failed on that.

 

This was great info! I have a leak around that area and I never thought there might be on o-ring inside.

 

Second gens had the 4.7L V8 available for a while before switching to the 4.6L (booooo). I'm guessing the 4.6L was introduced around the 2010 model year.

 

Our 2008 sequioa (2nd gen) has the 4.7L

 

I was not aware they put the 4.7L in the 2nd gen Sequoia. Thought they all got the 5.7L. Muy interesante

 

Clearly needs some PHM, but this rig is not mine. I just get to drive it at times.



The only 4wd automobile in the family. I'm not sure what year they changed to the 4.6

 

Maybe the intake cover is just a typo and that's really a 5.7

How likely is the "engine oil cooler" to leak oil into the coolant? I've been trying to flushing my coolant and currently on distilled water. But there's a yellow tint to the water. I've checked for head gasket leak with the indicator fluid and it checks fine.

 

The ‘cooler’ circuit in the radiator? Its possible.
The external cooler? Unlikely.

 

I should had been more clear, engine oil cooler. Not the transmission cooler. Currently I have the transmission preheater loop bypassed. And currently trying to flush out the coolant in the engine. I have a new radiator installed.

 

My bad, i wasnt paying attention, and daydreaming about aluminum radiators. Almost forgot about the filter cooler. And i have no idea, gonna try to find pics of the innards.

 

I tried to replace this on my 2001 4.7 Tundra, but the ac compressor is blocking the top bolt. Did you have this problem and, if so, did you have to move the ac compressor to access that bolt? I finally had to put it back together and it leaks more now. Here's a picture of what I am dealing with. Thanks for any help and yes, I know that this is an older thread, but is the only one that I could find.

 

Loosen the compressor. DO NOT CRACK THE HOSES OPEN.
push the compressor over to gain access.

 

Thank you SO much for your help! That's what I thought. Do you remember if you had to loosen or remove the serpentine belt also? I imagine that you would have to. I'll look to see how many more bolts there are than the one showing. I couldn't find ANY information on this repair other than Sequoias that didn't have this problem with the ac compressor. You rock!

 

I 5hink there are 3bolts holding that flange on.
You have 2 out already. When you get in there, see if
your “double barrel o ring is hard and useless..

take off your serpentine belt. Much easier to access.

 

Thanks again! Yes, the ac comp is in the way, so I'll have to get the belt off and see what other bolts are securing the ac compressor. By loosening the lower ac compressor bolt, I was able to gently rotate the oil filter bracket around that top bolt but I didn't want to remove the ac compressor as the truck was half way out of the garage door at my shop and the door couldn't go down. Also, the 67 Corvette was sitting outside. Couldn't leave it out overnight or the door up.
