Dealership service department screwed me over! Will I have problems in the future?

Two weeks ago I purchased my first Tundra, 2012 Crew max with 60k on the odometer. Very clean truck exactly what I wanted. Before I purchased the truck I made the sales guy put the truck on the lift so I could make sure the truck wasn't abused, no evidence of oil leaks or 4 wheeling underneath the truck. After a test drive I negotiated the monthly payments that fit my budget and I drove home. The next day while trying to figure out the remote start I noticed the valve cover gasket on the passenger side was leaking and the passenger door actuator worked intermittently. On Monday I took the truck back to the dealership and told them I wanted these issues fixed. Without argument they gave me a free rental car and said they would take care of it. That Thursday I Picked up my truck. on the way home I noticed a strong smell of burnt oil thinking nothing of it since they just replaced the valve gasket I kept driving about five minutes later a good Samaritan nearly ran me off the road and got me to stop and then told me that my truck was on fire. Come to find out the mechanic pinched the oil seal and forgot to put a bolt in. The dealership send a tow truck to pick up my new truck. After a frustrating conversation with the service manager they informed me that they were going to put their best mechanic on the job of fixing my truck the correct way and making sure there was no other damage. Yesterday I went to pick up my truck and the first thing I noticed was a chunk missing from the valve cover right at the Dall pin. Now the dealership is going to replace the valve cover I have a few concerns about their craftsmanship not to mention if I should be worried about any permanent damage due to the fire (heat stress). It doesn't appear that there's any other damage due to the fire which by the way I put out by hand!! What should I do now and should I be concerned about Any problems down the road due to this incident?

 

As long as they fix it, I don't see any long term problems as a result of that.

Next time I talk to them I'm going to try to get the vehicle transfer to actual Toyota dealership. They were supposed to call me today but never did.

 

Reset the deal what dose that mean?

 

Not sure what kind of warranty they gave you, but given all the issues, I'd ask them to extend it at least long enough to gain back your confidence in the truck.

 

I'm covered bumper to bumper for a long time! all this crap is under the limited used car warranty. Not to mention the original problem was a seeping valve cover which is common in these trucks. The main problem here is with their mechanics for all I know that chunk of cast aluminum is sitting in the motor. I should have just spent the six bucks on the gasket and done the work myself at least that way I would've known it was done correctly and I wouldn't have damaged the valve cover.

Frustrating. I sympathize with you. Just curious did you see the area of the missing chunk on the lift? If you saw the area and know for a fact the chunk is recent damage then that would be on them. However I know that whenever I've had issues and then had them "fixed" I am hyper-aware of everything on the truck. After the first issue, the missing chunk may have already been there but just became noticeable since you were aware and looking carefully.

I think I know the answer but does anybody know what kind of damage could've been done by the fire other than the obvious melted wires. I'm not too familiar with aluminum blocks and heds as far as I know they should be able to withstand extreme temperatures.

 

At first I was thinking the same thing but referred back to the videos and pictures I took before I sent the truck in the first time so I know for a fact that Damage was not there.

 

Since your truck wasn't a Ford Super Duty miles away from any help and was not on fire for a half hour, and you were able to put the fire yourself then I'd be safe to assume the engine block is fine....imagine there is a fire already going on inside your engine and it still runs....

 

lol I knew someone was gonna throw that out there. the guy that flag me down said it was shooting flames out the wheel well so I'm guessing when I stop and shut the motor off the engine wasn't spray oil anymore so the fire no longer have the fuel to keep burning.

 

Make sure the write-up details the damage, and that it was done by the service department.

The top 2. They are screenshots of the video that I took. You can see in the pictures that the valve cover was not missing any chunks.
