What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Initially I wasn't a fan of the red stripe until I saw the red ignition key light. Now I see that it really it really ties the dash together.

 

Hey guys! A lot of you have been wondering about the progress on my rig and where we're at with the engine rebuild. The engine is all installed and looks so clean; unfortunately I'd put in the wrong rear main seal, causing no oil pressure.

I'd love to tell you a lot has been done since then, but that ain't true. I've had zero motivation these past few weeks to drop the transmission and get to the seal so this project can be finished, it just seems like one problem after another. The other day I finally started on it and got essentially nowhere. The driveshaft has to be removed according to the Factory Service Manual, and those bolts are in there so tight.

This "forced" me to upgrade my 3/8" to a 1/2" impact, and that got the front shaft bolts out, but the ones on it in the middle of the truck will not budge. The transmission crossmember in the way forces the impact into an inefficient angle. A breaker bar spins the shaft and doesn't seem to work even with my buddy holding it. I've had the bolts soaking in PB Blaster and will maybe try again today. At least he brought a trans. jack which is safer.

Looks like I might be able to get away with not dropping the exhaust. After the drive shaft comes out, I have to remove the bell housing bolts (for the sixth time), crossmember bolts, trans. mount bolts, make sure all the wires/cables are off, and disconnect the torque converter from the drive plate. I am hoping I can pinch off the coolant lines right before their radiator connections and angle everything back and down without disconnecting the lines at the trans. and having to drain it. Also hope there's no more driveshaft stuff, that crap scares me. It's all so tight in here.

Anyone know of any tutorials of 1st Gen Trans. removal, or have any advice from doing this job? I'm guessing most have had a shop replace their transmission... The FSM makes everything look more complicated. The thought has indeed crossed my mind to have this truck towed to a shop so they can finish out this rear main seal job, but I'm sure that'd be $2,000... I want to get back to working on more fun stuff like painting the truck and building the camper.

I can totally imagine how you feel after all that work, just to have to drop the trans again. Keep your head high man, seems like you've done a great job from what I have seen in this thread. Almost there!

 

Sometimes it's the little things. Finally removed the broken vent visor from the rear window I've only opened to see if it opened. Then, finally removed the old dead dried on double stick tape. It took 2 days, goo-gone, rags, lots of goo-gone, & finally a razor blade & more goo-gone. But it's gone.
(... & I finally called the previous owner to find out when the T.B. was last changed. Left a message w/ Mom who's house sitting until they get back next week.)

 

Had a solo road trip today, about 12 hours, 380 miles each way. I discovered a few issues.

1, it’s overheating. I went out empty, coolant temps about 190-195. On the way back, with a 3000lb trailer, I was running 200-205, and it got up to 215 for a moment.

2, I think it’s running lean. At cruising, idle, or partial throttle, my long term fuel trims are 21.88%, with short terms bouncing from 5%-19%. From everything I can gather, that’s not normal.


Any advice or help would be appreciated.

Did my "Rustoleum Professional Grade Bedliner kit" today. Also put on my side steps. After that, the only thing I'm good for tonight is drinking beers.

 

How old is the radiator? 215 isn’t HORRIBLE. But it is high. As for running lean, yes it is. very. Surprised it didn’t set a code

 

I think they had a real leather one or all black or maybe brown too.

Thanks. It says it's only for 03 and up Tundra but I wonder if that's incorrect.

 

Radiator is most likely original. I pulled the radiator cap and found some gunk, but the coolant is only 2 years old as it was swapped when the frame was swapped.

I ran this sucker up the black hills wide open in the 95 degree heat with the AC blasting pulling 4500lbs last summer and it didn’t go over 215, so something is definitely up.

as far as the lean condition, everything goes down to 0.0 at wide open. LTFT, STFT, and upstream 02 voltage. I’m sure the running lean isn’t helping my overheating either.

I’m going to clean the maf sensor and and give the fuel filter a good soaking.

 

If your steering wheel looks like the one pictured it should fit. If not they might have a different one. The pictures tell the story.

If my commute stays the same I'll get my 400K sticker in a year or two. Sitting around 340 iirc.


October was one of my most "driven" months, but I average a little more than 2k a month.

Do you get reimbursed by your employer for it or are you driving for personal reasons? That would easily be $1000+ in reimbursement money.

 

Most places won’t. My pops does at least 60k a year and they won’t cover the gas... hence the corollas with ungodly miles

 

Might be worth to itemize on the taxes. At least before it would have been. I’m not sure now with the increase in the standard deduction.

 

Eh it’s never been an issue. His commute to work is worth it in his eyes because the pay is almost 4x as high compared to local places

Nope. Now, if they send us to another plant for training (at least 350 miles away) we can take a company sienna or our personal vehicle. On paid trips in our vehicle we get a per mile, per diem for food, and a gas card.

I've only been on a company trip once and it was for bogus ass training. We were supposed to be learning these new machines, but weren't included in any jobs or repairs done during that week. Kinda a bummer.

Oh well. I got to look at all the Cape Girardeau college girls that commuted to the factory there.

I was with my ex at the time, and wouldn't have dreamed of crossing that line. I would have lost my dick. Cut off like John Bobbitt.... or worse.

Straighten that bent bar. Hook a tow-rope up to that lower bar on your bumper guard and the other end to a tree. Looks like it would come out pretty easy.

 

That is after I straightened it. Real thin tube steel. It rebounded back to there. I'll have some output shots uploaded tonight. I'm gonna update my build thread soon with my couple of jobs I did in the last two days.
