Hey yall! i picked up a 2002 Toyota Tundra 4x4 with 106XXX miles on it about a year ago in Oregon. I noticed shortly after I purchased it as i was driving back and forth up into the mountains that often times there would be a lagging thud between only the first couple gears.. its has started to get a little worse now at 122 XXX miles and it is annoying because i feel it takes away from the acceleration as i dont want to punch threw the first gears..

i read on some forums a while back that the 2002 tundra transmissions have been known to go out early and some people were throwing in 2003 or 2004 trannys to help resolve this issue.

Any advice on what i could do or where i can find a solution to this issue?

Congrats on the truck. Hope you're enjoying it outside of shift issues. There are a few different things regarding the transmission that I've heard. You can try putting in some ARX (Auto RX) a whole bottle, drive on it for about 1000-2000 miles at operating temperature and it will dissolve any contaminants in the transmission. After that 2000 miles or so, do a complete flush and inspect, make sure you aren't wasting time.

You can swap a 03/04 trans into it, they made a few upgrades that would resolve hard shifting and shift latency. But if the name of the game is cost savings it'd be worth doing the ARX and inspection. Drop the pan, check for shavings, put in a magnefine filter.

yup did the auto rx and full flush already with new filter.... still has been doing itt....

now whats my best bet for finding a 04 tranny and making it compatible.. i know its pricey but i want to do it soon to regain that power loss from the hard shifting and latency..

eBay man. Unless you've got a parts shop around town that has a used one on hand. They should be compatible without and trans adapters to my knowledge. Don't quote me but they only changed the planetary set if I'm not mistaken...

On eBay they run around 4-600 bucks and new they run around a grand.

May also be worth looking around a salvage yard for a 04-06 trans. The last few I've bought were about 200-500. So you might save a buck or two.

The "thud" you're feeling may be the drive shaft carrier bearing is shot. Make sure that's not it since it's much cheaper than trans work

Can I get some clarification on this? The transmission from an 03 to an 06 will mate up to my 2000 driveline without modifications and is stronger than my original jive ass trans?

    I'm running a 4x4 access cab with the 4.7...

Sorry I didn't get back to this sooner Mark!

The Transmissions are the same 1995-05 on Toyota 5VZ-FE model engines which is the R150F for the 3.4, and the 1GR-FE RA60F for the 4.0. V6's.

For the 4.7 V8 the H151F is the trans model and it runs 2000-05 - This would of course be for the 2UZ-FE. As long as you stick to the model of the engine, and match the trans, it will fit. I've pulled one just recently from a 00 Land Cruiser for an 04 Tundra and everything worked out just peachy!

    Hope this helps man.

    Thanks for that info.

My 2000 is the 4.7 4x4 automatic and it just shifts.... well, weird. It doesn't insure confidence pulling a pop up across country and I'd like to have this thing bulletproof.

I've located a '04 tranny out of Kenosha and will be following up with that.

Thanks again for the info brother.

Not sure about your issue, but Toyota bought me a new tranny at 35k. Mine ate the OD gear. If you are towing anything much you should tow in D, punch the button and turn the OD off. Mileage will be as good or better in D when towing and the OD gear is a serious weak link. Replacement tranny has 100k+ on it now with no issues. When mine went out it would "clunk" when upshifting.

Just found an 04 trans with 24k out of Kenosha $525 shipped to the fire station.

I'll have my trans guy ("tranny guy" didnt sound right) do the filter/flush/fill and install for 800 more.... removing the weaker trans with 113k on its clock.

After that we'll start looking at lifts. Gotta get closer to the stratosphere

This was completed shortly after the above post. After running the "new" trans serial numbers I did find out the donor was a 2wd tundra with low miles.

I can report that the truck hasn't had any issues since the swap. I also have the original in the event the current trans dies. No issue with the swap from what my trans guy stated.... he didnt need the $99 trans dipstick tube
