I am a proud new owner of a 2003 Tundra Access Cab SR5 TRD 4WD. I have owned two 3rd gen 4runner before jumping on this truck, which I have been wanting for a while. My needs have changed and I needed a truck, but didn't want anything too new where I wouldn't be able to repair it myself. A guy I know in town decided to sell his truck and was looking to get rid of it quick because he had ordered a new truck, so he quickly sold (basically gave) to me. He was the original buyer/owner, but let his son have it for 2 years before selling. This guy is meticulous with maintenance and all that was confirmed when I pulled the service records, the only worries were the two years the son had it, but luckily there wasn't much harm he could do in two years.

This is my T4R before I sold it.

Issues: are a dent and missing fender flare in the bed, some surface rust from the son in Colorado, a torn CV boot, and some clear coat missing.

Goals: I'm hoping to make this a very capable truck, but not over the top. Toyota makes a great truck and I don't want to ruin that or hide that. This will be my daily driver and also my "go anywhere" vehicle. I live in Idaho and I need something that can get to climbing crags, trailheads, and to the ski hill.

First up, I replaced the CV with a new axle from CVJ. I also ordered Noico sound deadening and bright LED Reverse lights. I also decided to upgrade the interior to leather seats. I repaired some leather seats in my old T4R with some new synthetic leather covers from Wolfman's Upholstery and he is going to help me with some new gray leather interior seats for the truck.

Also, decided to try and fix the dent the son did to the truck bed. I didn't take a before pic, but got crafty with my dent popper

I haven't made a lot of progress but I sold my old 4runner to a local guy, which frees up some funds and time to go towards the new truck. I got some of the immediate and easier improvements and maintenance done. I addressed some of the surface rust inside the frame. It really wasn't bad, most of it turned out to be dirt or mud that had been there too long. I coated the rear axle with POR15 just to be careful and for future protection.

    - Replaced driver-side torn/destroyed CV axle with CVJ reman
    - Replaced the fuel filter
    - Replaced Driver/Passenger front window belt trim
    - Deep cleaned the interior- removed seats, trim, etc
    - Sound deadening throughout (except in the roof)
    - Replaced back window latches (won't pop out when you close the door).
    - Replaced speakers - Infinity Reference all around

Now I have to wait around for my parts to arrive and a window to work on the truck.
    What's on order:
    - SPC UCAs
    - ADS remote reservoir coilovers
    - Wheeler's Add-a-leaf
    - Front OEM Lower Balljoints
    - Alpine iLX-W650 headunit

    Small updates:
I had plenty of time to get a bit of work done while self-isolating after traveling home and being in my best friends wedding.

Got my new coilovers in as well as the rear suspension components. Waiting for a chance to install them.

Also order some Rago ditch light brackets, some Rigid D-series pods, and a Sequoia center console. I love the newer console and it has spot for switches.

Need to find/order a bracket to bolt it down in the back, and then maybe use/re-use one of the other brackets to make the front one able to bolt in.

Have to head out of town again for a week, and I'm hoping to drop off the truck and get the hood and roof painted while I'm gone to repair/correct the peeling clearcoat.

Also managed to install the rear diff breather extension. Ran the line along the frame and popped it in by the MC in the engine bay.

Got some new tires delivered! All the suspension is going to go on pretty much at once, along with wheels and tires.

Thanks. I read all over and looked at so many damn tires, but kept coming back to these and I had them on my old 4Runner and was very happy with them.

I ran the previous version on my truck for a few years, they were good to me.

Some nice updates on the way. I am gone this week and don't need my truck so I dropped it off to get the hood and roof repainted. The clear coat on the hood was peeling really badly, and the roof had some bad patches and scratches. Hopefully that will make it look like a new truck.
Also found a rear driver-side fender flare from a 2003 and same color to replace my missing one.
Lastly, I got a great birthday present from my wife. She offered to pay for me to get my truck bed lined with the liner of my choice. Thinking of having the same shop do it that's already painting it. I'm not sure of the stuff they use (Speedliner) so I'm also looking at LineX.

Ahhh shoot, your ahead of me, at least you’ve done something to Your’s. I haven’t touched mine, been waiting on my rear suspension stuff to come in and getting ready for paint

Thanks. I don't remember which Rigids you went with, but these things are nice. I think you'll be pleased with them.

I came back home after being gone for a week and got to pick up my truck on the way back into town. I got the roof and hood repainted to correct all the peeling clearcoat. What a difference!! One of the shop guys offered to buy it when I came to collect my keys. I also had my driver-side rear fender flare show up and I got that mounted in minutes. It isn't brand new by any means, but I think it looks a lot better than holes in the side and only 3 flares on the truck.

And then due to unfortunate circumstances, I was able to spend the whole weekend swapping out the front suspension. Replaced the UCAs and shocks and coils. The upper balljoints were dry as a bone and empty of any grease and the bushings on the bottom of the shocks were toast. I was surprised the coils seemed to be in good shape and there might be someone that can make use of them.

Thanks for the reminder, but I didn't. I waited until I torqued everything to spec and then put the cotter pin in.

I got the suspension all finished up. I didn't take photos like I was supposed to because I was working feverishly (punny) to get it done while I had some mandatory down time. Deaver AAL installed in the back with the overload left in. Hoping this will help retain some towing capacity. Fox 2.0 installed in the back to replace the KYBs. Then it was off to get new tires and wheels mounted and an alignment.

    Not too bad.

An aside: I love where I live in the mountains with access to some really fun things year-round and great people. I get my ass kicked by ex-olympians, pro athletes, and retirees that have nothing better to do than be really active and ski, mountain bike, or hike every day of the year. But, we are a small community without big box stores and limited options for things like car repair or tire shops.

I took my truck to the shop right when they opened, after making an appointment to have new wheels/tires mounted and get an alignment done. I also stressed that I needed my truck back for tomorrow (hence the whole reason to schedule and appointment). By 4PM I called and my alignment had been done, but the tires hadn't been mounted. I got a call at 7PM that they were about to mount the tires. The tech called back 10 minutes later saying he couldn't mount the tires because they were rubbing the UCAs. I tried asking some questions, and explained I left the instructions for the UCAs in the truck and asked if he adjusted anything. He told me the alignment was done and nothing could be adjusted to make them fit. I asked him to mount the tires/wheels and throw them in the back of the truck; which he did. I picked up the truck and argued down the price a bit since he didn't do the services in order and only half completed one of them.

Then this morning, after cleaning snow off the truck and moving in the garage I jacked up the front and loosened the UCA balljoints until the slid to the furthest point in the UCA. Then I tightened them up, mounted the new tire/wheel and bolted everything back up and lowered to the ground. FITS AND DOESN'T RUB THE BALLJOINT.

The lack of good auto repair shops is what caused me to start working on cars myself. I have heard horror stories where it takes 3 tries for a shop to change the oil or where car is damaged when going on or off the lift, and many others. It's still frustrates me when I have to have a shop to do some simple things and they can't seem to do it right, or at all, and I have to go back to have them do it right because I can't do something myself. Now that I have y wheels/tires mounted I have to take time out of my day to schedule another appointment and drive my truck there to get the alignment done again.

    Done venting.

Thanks. I've been a bit busy and distracted when I'm not busy so I haven't taken any pictures with the new wheels. I keep meaning to. I dropped it off for the airbag recall on my way to Salt Lake City and will have to do it when I pick it up next week.
You've made some really good progress on your rig, can't wait to see where it goes.

I never added any pictures after new wheels. Here is the truck with the new F-5 wheels from SCS. These things are great. I love them!

Love those wheels. I’m debating between those or the Enkei RPT1.

Those look good too. I ultimately chose the SCS because I've only heard great reviews, they had the exact size and backspacing I wanted and they were pretty light compared to a lot of others. They also just happened to be available at the right time, because I don't think any others were at the time.

Love those wheels! I almost went that route, but lack of patience (they only had 2 in stock) took over...

I love the Sun Valley area. One of my favorites...

Seems inappropriate to have a thread with a pic of a 4Runner on the top. Might have to change that. Although, you can see the Tundra photobombing.

    Write-up: Backup Camera Install

I ordered a backup camera from Master Tailgaters. It's a camera integrated into a tailgate handle.
Initial impression is that the handle seems sturdy and the camera is out of the way and seems secure in its location.

Here is the new handle (left) next to my 18 year old OEM handle (right)

First step is to remove the back panel on the tailgate with T30 bit.
Next you will need to remove the white plastic tabs that operate the handle and lock. You will need to use a screwdriver to pop them to the side and then lift the rod-end out of the white tab.
There are 2 nuts on the sides (8mm I think) and a small plastic tab on the bottom to keep the handle in place. *This is also a great time to grease the lock cylinder if needed*

Once the new handle is installed, reconnect the rod for the handle and lock to the tabs and use a piece of stiff wire to feed the RCA cable-end of the harness up through the drain hole in the tailgate. You can attach the connection anywhere but I decided that I wanted it close to the handle in case I needed to access it at some later point. I found that it was actually easier to plug the harness in together and then route it up the tailgate and secure it with a ziptie next to the handle.

Here it is installed. Nevermind the dirt.

The next part was routing the wiring for the RCA cable and connect the power and ground ends and finally tap the reverse trigger wire.

When connecting the power for the camera, you can either tap into the reverse power and ground in the taillight or you can connect via the trailer/towing harness. I chose to connect to the towing harness because it will give constant power to the camera if I want to have the camera on even when I'm not in reverse. There is a harness under the back bumper with two connections together, a black (with 3 wires) and gray (with 4 wires). I chose to splice and solder the connections rather than tap into the wire. More an opportunity to practice my soldering and hopefully have a stronger, more secure connection. The red power wire from the camera harness will be connected to the black wire on the towing harness. Connect the ground wire from the camera harness to the white wire in the towing harness. (Red=Black+ and Red/black=White-). Then leave slack in the harness until you have routed the wiring into the truck before bundling and securing the rest of the wiring.
I borrowed the next 3 pictures from @MrDirtjumper because he did a great job showing the tow harness and the wires to connect for power and ground for the camera. I hope he doesn't mind.

To route the wiring to the stereo, you can secure the RCA cable along the wiring harness on the driver-side of the truck. There is wiring that runs along the top of the frame all the way to under the driver-seat.

**Waiting to get pictures of routing along the frame and from inside under driver’s seat along door sill to stereo.

The reverse trigger wire is different for different years, but the most important note is that the wire location according to Crutchfield is not correct.

In a 2003 (other years may differ), you will need to access the connectors behind the glovebox on the passenger side, and just above the air duct there are two connectors. On the top row of the gray connector, there is a red wire with black trace (2nd wire from right).

And if everything goes as planned, your camera should turn on automatically when the truck is shifted into reverse, and depending on how you chose to wire the power, you can also turn on the camera view anytime the truck is on, whether in reverse or not.

This write up is exactly what I needed. Ordering the kit this week. Thanks for documenting the install!
