The current 5.7L does not have D4S technology (direct + port injection). They can take the 5.0L from the IS-F and retool it to up the torque, and it would be great. If Ford can put out 400/400 with their 5.0L, Toyota can too.

The other option they should consider is a 4.0L TTV8 if they were just gung ho on a TT application.

I'm sure that the 3.5L TWIN-TURBO V-6 ENGINE would be a great choice for a vehicle that weighs about 3,000 pounds, but it's not really what you want in a truck that weighs closer to 6,000 pounds and is typically used to haul & tow heavy loads.

I talked to my service manager and he said that him and the master mechanic were briefed on the new tundra mechanics. It will be the V6 from the LS platform. So its really what transmission are they mating to it. If its the 8 speed I am staying far away

Well back when the 2nd gen tundras came out, they took a gm block, and reworked it to give it much more hp and torque. And that is what changed pickups from that point on.
I think this time it will be the hybrid drive train that is the world beater. Look at what they did with the rav 4 prime. Lots of power and mpgs

Anyone holding out hope for a v8, should get inline for a 2021 with the 5.7

It's curb weight is nearly identical to my RCSB...

What is it's towing rating? Payload is about 1000 lbs.
What happens to it's performance when it's lifted on 35" tires?

Not sure on the Toyota. But, most of those metrics have gone up significantly with other manufacturers TTv6 applications.

I can't wait! Call it what you want, but 10mpg's suck balls for a daily driver. Don't get me wrong I can afford 8 bucks a gallon before I start to jump up and down but Why would I? Especially if that stupid little TTV6 can tow and then give me at least 25mpg daily driving then I'm game. Bring it Toyota! You've got a buyer here.

I doubt we will see a million mile TTV6, and we probably will see few that make it past 250,000

Heavy truck, plus a small, high stress turbo motor, less low end grunt, no thanks. Wait till those turbo components wear and you have to do turbo seals. Gas mileage wont be that great, maybe a few mpg more. V6 turbos belong in sports cars, not trucks. I dont know where or how this trend started but i just cant get behind it. Who cares if its slightly faster out of the box, nobody cares about speed in a truck. You can make a toaster go fast if you throw enough money at it. Im glad i got my 21 V8 tundra. Cant wait to get top dollar for it if i ever sell it since it will be the last year of the venerable V8 that everyone will come to realize belongs in a truck.

Ford already has a powerful TTv6 hybrid drivetrain. You're probably right, but I truly hope that "world beater" doesn't just mean catching up to Ford except with Toyota reliability. And it'll be years before we see if Toyota's new Tundra drivetrain is as reliable over the long term as everyone expects.

The 5.7 is derived from the LS460 engine. So it will continue to be derived off the Lexus LS engines.

There's Ford's with over the 250k mile mark, so that should be expected from 95% of Toyota's. The 3.5 EB is not the issue anymore in them. 1st gens had some turbo issues - good old Ford not thoroughly testing stuff and putting it on the consumers - but they've kept working on them and now with proper maintenance most of those engines will do 250k like nothing. Other stuff on the truck not so much.

You're correct that there is only so much energy in a gallon of gas, but that doesn't mean the current engine is efficiently using all available energy in said gallon of gas. With improvements in technology, it's not unheard of for a newer engine to be able to more efficiently use the energy in a gallon of gas, and get better performance, and fuel economy. I would actually say it's kind of ridiculous to think those things wouldn't improve, especially when we're working with a 14 year old engine.

IIRC, 1st gen Ecoboosts (and some of the 5.0s - specifically in 2011-2012) had some misformed cylinder issues. I'm not going to say they were all unreliable as hell, but I WILL say that I worked with 4 guys who all bought Ecoboost F150's between 2011-2013. Every one of them had at least 3 or so recalls; one needed a short block replacement for the issue I describe above.

The 1st gens were not good, and that's being nice. But they've worked on it since the Ecoboost lineup was their main draw and they fixed the problems. There's still manufacturing issues in some, but that's a Ford problem across everything they do and not on the engine.

    This.

Also, until you experience the power delivery of a good modern turbo engine, you really don't know what you are missing. And no I would not consider the 3.5EB or even the HO version in the Raptor to be good in that regard.

PS I also do not fit the average Tundra owner you described and I like turbos. Though, if Toyota would build their own version of a Mercedes M177 or BMW B58, that would be preferable to the V35A. Of course that doesn't seem likely to happen any time soon.

You guys sound so ridiculous. Total luddites. I was curious who was still buying these trucks when the only benefit they have over a Ford/Chevy/Ram is "reliability" and resale value... after coming here it's very evident the answer...

Anyway you can go on autotrader and search F150, then filter by V6 and sort by "mileage: highest" and see a ton of them that have over 300k miles and are still running. But hey, I guess it feels better to just sit around whining on the internet about change.

Suuuuurely if *gasp* Ford can figure out how to make a TTV6 reliable, Toyota can do even better...

Does anyone know what the thermal efficiency of the 5.7 is? Just wondering how it stacks up to the 37% of the TTV6. I'm for damn sure not smart enough to calculate it myself
