Same problem here on my 2019 Limited from day one off the lot. To me its definitely a clutch issue that has a clunk where it jars the belt so hard it slips and makes more noise for a second too,, that cannot be good for the belt. Also, when I turn engine off there is a wind-down sound that is embarrassing as well. As far as I can tell its probably also the compressor dragging when it shouldn't as the belt slows and stops spinning the ac wheel. Just havnt had time to bring it in yet...

The problem is...you have to leave it with them for at least 24 hours...so they can try to replicate it (most people report that the loud clunk doesn't happen much unless it's sitting for that long...or longer....)...

p.s. I just saw another series of posts on this forum from about 5 years...discussing this problem....i"ll look for the link......
It's wierd that with all these posts, slmost noone has actually brought it in to the dealer for diagnosis (except for maybe 1 or 2 people
    recently)...

Eventually I will get in there to tell them what problems is, i.e. sidestep their bs attempt at something else. I am "fortunate" that it always makes noise and just is super bad after sitting and like getting hit with a sledge as you accelerate and turn ac on. So bad when u do that it causes vehicle to lerch as the ac tries to stop the serpentine.

Parked it next to a shiny new 2020 at work and listened to the smooth on-off of that trucks ac, and no noise at shutdown.

I think yours is the first case I've heard of where it does it all the time. Mine is a really strong clunk if it's sitting more than 12 hours ....but very weak otherwise.....I just avoid the clunk by driving around for a few minutes before turning it on (so as not to cause possible damage).. I just don't have the time to leave it overnight at the dealership.

Some people here (above) said they "told the dealer about it so it's on their record if anything happens".....I doubt that does any good at all. Dealerships need to replicate it themselves to get something covered later on if it breaks. I mean, If the aircon breaks at some point, and you say "well...I told you about a clunk last year and you wrote it down".....I doubt that will help.

Just south of the city in La Salle, bought mine from birchwood as the salesmen was a friend of a friend. Never again, it's like having one arm tied behind your back. My truck's TPMS system just outright died when the cold weather arrived the other day (no pressure detected from any tire, but no mention of the issue on the app, either), so there is another trip to crown in my future. I've been going there for all dealer maintenance work since I'd rather push it to crown than spend another dime at birchwood.

Youve got to be driving for a nice long while before it goes away when you turn it on. Unheard of on any of my other vechicles, this is just one of the many issues Ive had with this thing, the other unsolvable thing is the pulling to the right, they just gave up.

Crown is garbage just like birchwood. You having any other issues with yours? I have an unsolvable pull to the right, after the 3 times in they tried to charge me for an alignment. Rattles like crazy after it sits in our recent cold all from the dash.

I pass through La Salle everyday to work in Rosenort, we have the exact same truck, Id love to take yours for a spin around the block and see if we have the same issues.

My 2020 tundra tss is doing the exact same thing... i bought it new and around the 6month mark i noticed after it sat for a day or two, it would make the clunk noise when i turned on the ac for the first time... I live in south texas and weather is nice so it isn't caused by a cold weather issue... And yes, my dealership is USELESS...

Hey guys I’m new here. It seems I’m not the only one whose AC makes this noise. 2021 with 1400 miles, truck sits all week usually drive for weekend fun with kids. I’m taking to Longo Toyota next week and will update.

I have few complaints about my Tundra, but I got this from time to time and its very annoying. Like others here have stated, I found that not instantly putting on the heat or air after initial startup and giving it a few minutes to come down off fast idle pretty much eliminated the clutch noise. Worked for me, just my 2 cents.

My 2021 SR5 with about 1400 miles on it has this same issue. Bought new November 2020 and never used the A/C until about a week ago. First time turning it on, KaClunk!!! Thought maybe it was a one and done type of thing. Nope...after sitting overnight, next morning loud clunk when the A/C first turns on. Sounds horrible and cannot be normal. Every morning it makes this god awful noise. Brand new vehicle should not be doing this. How has Toyota not had a recall on this after so many people saying the same exact thing? Has there been any updates from the people that have had their dealers look into this?

2021 SR5 with 700 miles on it has been doing this since I've gotten it. I already had the dealership give my driver side door an adjustmentbecause it didn't close fully and when it did, it would make a loud popping sound when opening it. Now I finally decided to look into this issue and I'm glad others have had some success with getting this issue resolved. I'll be contacting my local dealer on Tuesday to see what they say.

I bought my 2021 in February and it has made the AC noise twice. It sounds like somebody hit it with a hammer, then it runs fine.

I have a 2021 1794 edition with the same issue. I let it set for a few days at the dealership and met with them when it was time to replicate my concern. After letting it sit, I video recorded the startup and a/c engagement. It made the loud clunking sound in their presence. Dealer ended up replacing the clutch and explained how the component’s measurements are so fine, that 1/1000th of a difference is enough to make that brief clunking noise from the AC when it’s first engaged. Was annoying, but seems to be fine now.

I leave my AC/heat on when I shut the truck off, so its already on when I start it the next time. Never heard any sort of clunk or weird sound from it. Just curious if this is happening to everyone at engine startup or when pressing the AC button. I don't use the AC much at all up here but maybe as it starts to warm up I'll keep an ear out for it.

The A/C clutch cycles when you have the heat/defrost on also, so it seems you're one of the lucky ones who has never had it clunk. Mine does it if I instantly turn on the heat/AC after I start it, If I give it a few minutes till it comes down off fast idle, it doesn't. :notsure:

I've always wondered if that clunk is causing any damage (or pre-mature wear, etc...) .....or is it just an annoyance (I can live with that, given the
hassles of having to leave it at the dealer for a few days so they can replicate it (assuming they refuse to use videos as evidence)......
Also, we all have zero idea how common this problem is.....no way to know from number of forum posts (the numerator), with an unknown denominator
(all recent tundra owners). I've just been letting it warm up a little before turning on the AC to avoid the clunk....but that's not a great solution. Even
after doing that, I still hear a "little" thud when turning it on. ..i guess thats normal.

I definitely don't have any sort of AC clunk. Just hit over 10k miles and the heat/defrost/AC is always on every time I start the truck. Never heard anything weird from under the hood at start up.

You wanna try and not have the ac on when you start and turn it on after you start it, it'll clunk. For some it's so severe it jolts the truck.

Why would I try to make it happen? I’m not going to change my normal daily ops just to try to create a noise in my AC. Maybe you should try to leave yours on all the time so you don’t have this issue.

Lol because it still makes a noise regardless. I'm trying to find a solution not a workaround. People here have the problem when turning it on. One had his fixed maybe if enough complaint to toyota he they will tsb it

So you're saying my truck makes the loud noise regardless? That's weird, because I don't hear it, and I haven't seen you hanging around my truck when I start it each day.
I'm just putting it out there that its not every truck like you think it is... just like not every Tundra has a cam tower leak, or a PCS system failure, or any of the other "common" problems discussed here.
