This is a pet peeve of mine. Why do people cover their license plates in photos they post on here? If I was driving down the street next to their truck I can read the license plate, but heaven forbid I see it in a picture on a forum. smh

Lol....very true. There is a site that you can put a plate and state and it will tell you the year and make of the vehicle but no personal details.

Probably for similar reasons that they may obscure the face of someone in a photo post. Whereas they still walk/dive around in public with their face uncovered.

I think that if someone posts all the details about their truck, they don’t want someone to come and take all their mods, or maybe the whole truck. The likelihood is not very high, but better safe than sorry, right?

I'm pretty sure the practice started for insurance/legal/warranty reasons. Back when I was on Mustang and AMG forums folks would post a lot of videos and pics of cars doing things that were highly illegal in North America. Say you wreck your car and the insurance adjuster scrolls the pertinent forums and finds all sorts of evidence of you being a hooligan, they may have cause to deny your "claim".
Same with warranty claims. You say your transfer case just stopped working one day. The photos you post on a forum may tell a different story. Pics of a car meet with activities the cops may be interested in would be a treasure trove of info if the plates were all visible. Say you're at a late night drag race and your car shows up in some pictures the cops are looking at, then you post a pic the next day after your weekly wash and wax with your plate showing... pretty easy to connect the dots.
Not saying these investigative things happen often, if at all, and may just be hyper-cautious behavior, but that's what I've always thought the reason was for blurring out a plate.

This is probably not necessary for most folks around here, but its a pretty common thing for street-driven sports cars doing sports car things. I think the practice just stuck and folks just do it because they see everyone else doing it and think it must be the thing to do.
If you feel the need to cover your tracks and protect your identity, you probably have reason to, and that's fine with me.

I guess another reason could be a simple internet argument turns into a face-to-face confrontation if someone could get your address from your plates. Again, unlikely, but possible.

May be different now, but back in 12 and 13 when I worked at Target AP we could pull peoples license plates online and see where people took their vehicles to get smogged. So you can technically figure out if they're local or not to a certain area. We could figure out how local people are since most people smog their vehicles within a mile or 2 from their home or within a 5 mile radius... makes easy targets which I agree with previous posts... plus insurance may be looking up them Mexico races people post with highways clearly visible in their videos.... good luck finding mine though, LOL...

    I've been a paying subscriber of publicdata.com since 1999.
Ran my current wife thru it the night I met her in 2006.
Told her I was going to, she came up clean.

It has civil court (marriages, divorces, etc.), criminal court, DL #s, DMV/plate search, property tax, voter registration, sex offenders.
Used it for family business reasons for years.
Seems only certain things in certain states is searchable.

The last couple years it has been hit or miss on running vehicle plates and other info.
Maybe public records are getting harder to find.

I recently canceled the service, family no longer needs it, but I'm paid up for another 6 months or so.
So yes, depending on what state one is in, you aren't as anonymous as one might think..:eek2:

I think he meant that the drag race pics might have blurred plates, or have removed plates when racing, but if you post it up on a forum after a wash there are dots to connect.

What I was saying is if there's pics of cars doing illegal stuff but no visible plates, then you see the same car the next day in a different post with visible plates, then you have a name and address. Not saying it happens a lot, but there was a big motorcycle bust a few years ago in San Diego, 100's of bikes hooning around the freeways and causing a bunch of chaos. They pretty much all got away the day of, but the police tracked them by pics and videos posted on social media and were able to match up bikes with owners and pay them a visit.

For me, I don't want anyone I don't know to know where I live. Even friendly forum members might be people you don't want to have dealings with in real life. My state's plates have info on them that make it easier to narrow down where somebody might live.

If you want to show your plate, go for it. If you don't, blur it out. If you are posting a pic of somebody else's rig, definitely blur it out unless you have their permission to show it. Same goes for anybody's face. It's their right to privacy to waive as they see fit, but no one else's.

How is that even legal though, how can you with any certainty say that they are a match? Just because my car looks like your car, doesn't make it your car.

I never said it was legal, or even that it happens all that much. I was just giving examples of why folks who may post pics of questionable behavior online might want to prevent identifying themselves via plate numbers. Like I said, probably hyper-cautious on their part, but I'm pretty sure that's why folks started blurring out their plates on publicly viewed pics.

People are dumb, and police are not required to be truthful when questioning people. Lots of people would cave when shown the two photos of their car. This forum is hardly the place to be worrying about legal/ethical tactics used. An answer was provided to your question, and though you may not agree with it, it is a perfectly valid answer.

Another possible reason would be to avoid being hassled by internet trolls in real life. Have you ever heard of "S.W.A.T.ing" somebody? Same thing can be done with a license plate. Fake call to Highway Patrol or other LEO stating that a vehicle with plate number XXXXXX was driving aggressively, erratically, weaving in and out of traffic, etc. There are people who think it's funny to screw with other people like that.

I may have done some questionable things in cars and trucks in my youth, but I don't do anything like that anymore, so not too worried about that. My only concern these days is Toyota denying a warranty claim because they saw a picture or video of me using the truck like they show in the commercials. I don't think that happens, but I wouldn't put it past some corporate lawyer to do a little "research" in trying to save the company a couple of bucks. I remember seeing somewhere about a guy with a brand new Jeep that basically submerged it in mud, then took it to the dealership all caked with mud and broke to hell and tried to get it fixed under warranty. Pretty sure videos of his antics surfaced and he had some explaining to do.

I also agree that you don't want just anyone on the web to be able to track down where you live. I don't always blur out my plate, but I would certainly never post someone else's plate online.

It's fun to scribble it out in the Google Pixel photo app on my phone.

I usually do it at work, so am getting paid to do it. Plus, I can add "Photo Editing" to my resume and internal job applications now.

    Win Win.
