Well, I didn't start and run the truck for 3 days. Drove 13 miles to the dealership w/out turning on the AC, hoping that it would make a fuss. Had the head service writer come out to listen and guess what, nothing happened. Sounded normal. So, driving it around a good bit in traffic before engaging the AC stops that awful start up AC noise. Anyway, since it did not make any noise, the advice was to let it go and if it begins to make the start up racket more consistently, bring it back in. Basically, drive it and if it breaks (while under warranty) your are good to go. Sorry this trip didn't shed any light on the subject. Carry on.

I did the same exact thing, except I drove to the dealer on day that was almost 120 out with no AC, just to hit the ac button for the service tech and look like a crazy person when nothing happened.

Sorry for bringing this thread from the dead. Recently just noticed this sound too and while I'm driving if I turn the AC on, I can feel the whole truck "jerk" or engine brake. This has happened twice lately, anyone else experience this?

My 2002 ranger did something like what people here are describing every once in a while when I didnt use the ac for a while.

My 21 has done it a couple times now in the 4 months I've had it. Both trucks do the same thing but it doesnt sound like the videos ive heard on here or the shot gun blast people have mentioned. Mine happens when I first turn the ac on, for 1 second when the fan starts to move, it will sound like a coffee grinder. Everything works perfectly.

Would anyone here say thats what they are hearing?

I think 99% of the people here who have complained about this describe it exactly as you and I would, a short little grunt, nothing like a shotgun blast for sure.

If it's a coffee grinder noise for a second I don't think it's a Toyota only problem. Quick google search shows its fairly common on alot of vehicles. Maybe it's just an engagement sound.

You're probably right, Its annoying but I don't lose sleep over it. Those who say it sounds like a shotgun, have no doubt, never fired a shotgun before. ;)

Did you describe it like a shotgun blast? Wasn't picking on you personally, but if that's what you said, that's not exactly a figure of speech issue, its a stupidity issue.

He's stating what he has experienced, same as you. His experience is no less valid than yours.

My AC will sometimes make noise when I turn it on, and it's a brief grinding type noise. Nothing like a bang or buck, so my experience is more in line with what he is describing. It doesn't mean others, such as yourself, don't experience a louder noise. It just means there are 2 different experiences happening.

Dude, did you just have a stroke or something? I was asking if what I thought people were experiencing was the same as what was happening to me, and proceeded to describe it, as best it made sense to me. Then I asked if others would agree with my description. If your getting a jolt or blast sound then clearly your answer to my original post and question would be a NO. Move on. No reason to get like I put hot sauce in your condom.

Maybe your the one with the stroke, where in what you just quoted do I refer to you. The thread says ac clunk start a thread that has a grinding noise. 2 different things.

Uhm...you literally said that after quoting MY post. How could you be referring to anyone else BESIDES me? Quoting someone is the definition of refer to someone directly.

It's not like I am completely out of line with my questions to the group. One guy said what I was describing was what he was interpreting the sounds in this thread to be as well. If not, then just ignore it like everyone else on the forum.

I’ve noticed mine do the same thing twice. Very brief. I thought that can’t be normal, but then again my truck makes other weird noises that are normal (ABS clunk, engine sounding like a diesel).

2019 TRD Pro does this. I'm on 5 5th gen 4runners and everyone did it as well. I think its a vapor/phase issue and compressor gulps in a few droplets of liquids.

Yesterday I noticed that my 2020 has this AC clunk. I never noticed it before.

In all previous drives the AC button was already on, and I never heard the noise. Yesterday was the first time I started the truck with the AC button off, and then pressed it about 5-10 seconds after start while warming up. Clunk.

Has anyone else observed this pattern where if the AC button is already on while starting there’s no clunk? I’ll test it a few more times to see if this is a consistent pattern. I don’t drive the truck much - once or twice a week.

Yes we've talked about it here https://www.tundras.com/threads/a-c-noise-when-turning-on.39185/page-6#post-2289831

You still might get something even though you leave it on, personally mine was terrible to the point of moving the truck, toyota is oblivious to it, no fix.
