1st Gen. Lunch Table - General Discussion

I can appreciate just about any camping setup. RTT in a camp ground have always been a bit of a mystery though. I can understand it when no one else is in sight, but your picture is what see around here. I will pitch a ground tent that I can stand up in I think.

 

What's the story?

 

Same as all the others I guess. The LBJ's are a known weak point on these trucks, especially the earlier 1st gens. You have to replace them when they start getting up there in miles, and don't go aftermarket.

 

I just meant had they been replaced before and what kind of mileage.

anyone ever run one of these kits, or know anyone who has? I was thinking it might be a good alternative to getting my leaking Axle seal replaced, and custom fabricating a 9.5 or sterling full float to fit.

 

It still looks WAY better than this....even with the mismatched colors...

 

This looks super rowdy, but after all that money and work, why not just swap in some DANA 44s or 60s?

 

a 44 is no better than my current 8.4. at that point if I'm going D60, I'd have to buy the housing, rebuild it, re gear, install new shock mounts and shock relocation brackets, new shocks, all new brakes, so it would end up being about $1000 more than just full-floating my 8.4", and easily triple the labor.

 

If you full-float the 8.4, you're likely to re-gear anyway, so I'm calling that a win. The D60 R&Ps can't be more expensive than the Toy 8.4.
Installing new shock mounts means there's no reason to buy new shocks unless you're buying them anyway...so again, no extra expense from the swap.

Shock mounts and relocation brackets are just some 1/4" plate. Easy enough to cut at home, or buy from Barnes for cheap.

I can see it being more expensive, but IDK about $1000.
And what's this 'labor' you're talking about?

 

Those look really cool. I read the description, but I'm still struggling. Can you dumb down the purpose of these? My rear wheel bearing is out in my sequoia and it's a stupid design where the bearing alone is $150 and has to get pressed. Would this make it easier to replace wheel bearings in the future?

 

I would love this night stand.

Bought one of these to try out. Seems to work, okay'ish with carb cleaner. The 25 or so injectors I tried it with (3 sets of 8 and one spare) had matching spray patterns.

I'd say it's at least good for seeing if the injectors have problems and need to be professionally cleaned.



You can't really see it from this angle but the 12-hole injectors have a 'V' shaped spray pattern. If the injector placement on the intake manifold or cylinder head is positioned right (on a 4 valve head) it will direct the spray to both intake ports/valves.


I haven't pulled the stock injectors to try. Yet.

 

I like how there are $100+ (in the early 90s) Crupi/JP pedals on this contraption.

the purpose is to remove the load on the axle shaft, so that it only deals with the force of turning the wheels, not supporting the weight of the vehicle as well.

It also makes it so that if you broke an axle shaft, your entire wheel wouldn't fall off and you could line the vehicle home. this is how HD trucks have their axles.

Labor is just meaning my time. I'm no fabricator, so it'll take me a ton of time. I assumed buying an archive garage shock relocation kit at 400.

I'm already re-geared to 4.56 my 8.4, so I'd be saving money in that sense.

D60: bearings and install kit $250, ring and Pinion - $350, custom drive shaft, $500, figure 400-500 for the housing assume no shock work new brakes cutter bearings and seals, $300. TOTAL: $1900
8.4 full float conversion: Toyota front donar $250, full float kit $750, new bearings and seals brakes $300 TOTAL: $1300

Good eye, they do stand out huh. I had bear claw pedals for less than a year, first time they grated my shin I sold them.

 

I ran JPs on my Kastan XXL back in 96 or 97.
When I switched to MTB, I switched to platforms...but I always think about my old JP squares.

Those things were meat-grinders. But man, they held Vans like no one's business.

My friend thought I was crazy to sell him my bear claws and I bought Odyssey twist pedals instead. Took about 2 weeks for him to grind his leg and he asked how I like the Odyssey hahaha. They didn't grip nearly as well but they worked, not having the fear of becoming shredded beef helped me out.

Aw yeah! You’ll be stoked. Truck will feel so different you’ll wonder where the old boat you were driving went.

 

Used to get excited for the road grader, but tried not to drive for a couple days after. They use that nasty mag water here and it's terrible to clean off. Now, I don't really get excited about the grader because there is so much big rig traffic that the smoother road only lasts for a week if I'm lucky.

 

Went in a salvage shop here. Aisles packed with tourists like us. Maybe 1.5 square feet of footing between aisles. Sardinage.

Most people that appear to be my age were talking about the latest celebrity gossip. I didn't follow what they were conversating about. Revealed to me just how far outside the "normal" I am for my age group. I started to feel very much like an outsider. Reminded me of the Geto Boys, Mind playing tricks on me.

Decided it best to leave the establishment as I have nothing in common with any of these sheeple. Went outside, and hung around the cigarette smoking guards woman. Now heres some comfort. Someone I can relate to, and tell incredibly fucked up jokes to. It was refreshing to be able to have healthy, unrestricted discourse about some of the most fucked up topics. I always have related to the "vintage" models. It's hard to make macaroni noises in a 4 person tent in the same site as your parents though...

I have nothing in common with my age group except just that. My age group. I don't even know how to initiate conversation with them without sounding like a Craig. Something to be avoided at all costs.

My entire life I've never fit in with these new age shit heads. I've spent every moment people watching. Learning from them. I've always seen the couples. They stand out. Few I've noticed are comfortable with their significant other.

I find myself in a strange time. Born in the wrong generation perhaps.
