Looking under the truck it seems like they had to drop the tank to change the canister anyway. Seems like a simple test to vent the tank to atmosphere to see if the issue is still there. And that would definitely diagnose the canister or not

So my issue was dirt in the canister. The fuel filler neck is a filter for the canister. I cracked that filter but I thought it was just plastic around the filler nozzle do I didnt worry about it. but over time dirt/dust was falling down the tube and filling up the canister.

I found a canister on ebay for $200 and decided to try it just to troubleshoot. When I pulled the old one out a bunch of dirt fell out and I followed the hose up to the filler neck and thats when I found the problem. Swapped the filler neck "filter" thingy ($30) and canister and now I can fill up like its a brand new truck.

Well I just picked up my truck from Toyota. They said they found nothing wrong. Low and behold I go to the gas station and the truck fills up fine.
The only thing I can think is that yesterday I was able to completely fill the tank completely by siphoning in 5 gals at a time. Filling my jerry can in between every call I went on then letting it siphon while I was on the call. Maybe a full tank with gas sloshing in it dislodged the roll over valve. Hopefully it fixed its self and I won’t have the issue again. If I do you’ll guys will be the first to know.

Like I said, mine got dislodged when they removed the neck. They had to drop the tank right? Perhaps that did it.

They didn’t drop the tank at the second visit, only the first and It still wasn’t working after the first trip. Unfortunately I’ll probably never know.

Just heard back, they want to replace the whole tank. It will be around 1750 if Toyota won’t cover it under warranty. Waiting to hear back on the warranty claim now, hopefully they cover it.

Take that sucker off road and give her a good thrashing. That should shake that rollover ball valve thingy loose.

I think that might be what cause my original issue. I was thinking back to what I was doing right before I had this issue, and I remember I was taking a couple rough dirt roads to get to a fishing spot. It was the next fill up after that weekend that the issue started. Who knows maybe something got rattled loose.

Got the truck back again, has a new fuel tank I guess will see if it’s fixed over the next couple weeks. I did have to pay the 1750 because they haven’t heard back about the warranty. They said it was under manual review and when they hear back they’ll refund me or let me know it was declined.

I almost got the transfer flow tank instead but I’m holding out hope Toyota will come through with the warranty. If they don’t, I’ll definitely be kicking myself a little.

As well they should. What could you possibly have done to the OEM tank to disqualify warranty coverage?

The service manager at the dealership originally told me not to get my hopes up because my truck was past the 36,000 mile power train warranty. And that as long as I could get gas in the tank there isn’t an issue. I got frustrated and had my office deal with them after that. They told me they talked to his boss and after that he got real nice.

That’s pretty shocking. Emissions equip is covered for far longer than the 36k warranty, I’ll bet the charcoal canister would be covered through that

federal law with emissions components is 8 years 80,000 miles. should be no issues getting anything warrantied in the EVAP system

Thanks for info, my truck is at 67k miles and been trouble filling tank since bought certified used at 65k ..waiting on first oil change to let dealer know.

other minor things noticed : no tire change kit, just the jack. Parking break needs set. Tailgate damper needs replaced as well as shocks (wondering if stay with plat blacks or trd blues ?!)

Yep, brake fluid. Nearly impossible to see the level, I've always had to remove the lid to see the stuff. Maybe it's just my old eyes???

    Interesting topic.
I've topped off every vehicle I've ever owned or worked from. Live in Maine. Owned 3 Toyotas the last 30 some odd years all with over 100K on them and hunt/fish/camp over the worst roads you can drive on, the farthest from civilization I can get so I always topped off. Work trucks also with cable and phone companies the farthest reaches of Maine systems in the woods always topped off as much as I can get in there.
I have never ever had a fuel problem like this.
Is this only a problem with Tundra 38 gallon tanks? Cause thats what I just got in my new Tundra. I'll have to pay attention from now on I guess. Whats this rollover valve? Does it keep gas from coming back out if you roll over? Interesting also if it is cause my first Tacoma I rolled over and slid on the roof a bit in my only accident. I think the only thing they didn't have to repair was the engine and the gas tank/fuel system. Never had any problems after they replaced radiator and did the cosmetic stuff.

This has only been an issue with the big tanks and it hasn’t been that common of an issue. I believe what happened with my truck is I had a mostly full tank and went on a really bumpy road the damaged the valve by slamming on it.
