After thoroughly enjoying my new Katskins, it’s now time to overhaul the sound system.
I went to Crutchfield and greased up my Visa card. My double Din outfit comes with a rear view camera. I want to mount it in the pocket of the tailgate handle. I bought a new handle so I can do the install on the bench. The camera is tilt able on its mount. I would like to center
the camera in the handle. If I do that then it would prolly get bumped more often.
I can slide the mount to the opposite side of the key lock. Would a few inches off center cause
a weird picture angle? Also, how much of the lens needs to be exposed? I read another poster tried a flush mount and the picture was not good. If anyone has a picture to share of the camera mount, please post. I do not want to make a license plate mount, because I just replaced my plate lights with LED, and it would wash out the camera.

I have no experience with any rear view cameras and am almost black out :drunk:

You should flush mount it in the tailgate. Drill you a hole underneath the tailgate handle, and pop that camera in that dude.

Do it for science! I don't think anyone has done that yet. :headbang:

I second this. I would love to see how it turns out. I'm thinking about adding a backup camera myself.

Would it be easier to mount it by the hitch somewhere? I would hate to run wires through the tailgate.

Dead stock with oem 16" starfish wheels. We'll see how long that lasts. :) Topper of unknown origin.
FWIW, I replaced my license plate lights with an LED fixture and had to cover at least 7/8 of the lights with black tape. There's no reason for license plate lights to light up the tailgate like Yankee stadium. I figured a cop might pull me over for displaying a white light to the rear (illegal). Plus, it was just obnoxious.

So, dim the license plate lights, improve your rear cam vision and don't look like Yankee stadium.

    FWIW, YMMV.

Sounds like you are overthinking it a little to me but I also like to measure twice before cutting into the truck at all so......
Mock the damn thing up once you get it!

Since I have no actual idea at all what you are talking about regarding the exact camera and how it is designed to mount, get the radio connected and powered up and connect the camera so you can see the image and just run the camera to the rear with the cable on the ground and take a piece of cardboard or anything at all and drill the size hole in it you will drill in the truck and stick it back there and see what you think before drilling the actual truck parts.

This way you will be able to see if anything gets blocked or not by the install and also whether you have any field of view issues with fixing the mounting position vs leaving it visible where it likely would be more adjustable.

    Trust but Verify!

I mounted mine in my tailgate handle. It's worked great so far. It wasn't difficult to run the wires as there are drain holes in the tailgate. My only regret is that I ordered white. I intentionally did mine off center. No issues.

I did mine offset to the opposite side from the lock, image is great. I cut a piece of heavy duty rubber hose I had laying around in the shop and used it to run up in the tailgate where the wires came out. Ran the tubing all the way under the bed and ziptied it in place. Protects the wires in that gap between the bed and tailgate.

The first step is admitting you made a mistake, this is great progress! Don't worry, your truck still looks good even though its the wrong color.

Like some others, I chose tailgate handle centered and has worked great. If that is your choice, lube up the side catches and handle mechanism while you're there. Less stress and 2 fingers can open tailgate. I'd also take a look at an on going thread just below your thread. Many good suggestions there also.
