While we are on transmissions, my wild @$$ guess is that Toyota will put the Asin TR80-SD transmission that was originally designed for Volkswagan-Audi and their line of powerful engines in the new Tundra. It is an 8 speed that achieves an equivalent installation to the 6-speed AT based on the conventional high torque capacity 6-speed AT. This makes sense since it would require minimal engineering to replace the existing 6 speed in the Tundra. It boasts fuel efficiency and weight savings while taking advantage of the high torque from the engine. It also replaced 6 speed automatic transmissions in the VW-Audi lineup so it has a proven track record.

Basically, it would be a low risk move to use a transmission that someone else paid for to be developed, that is pretty much plug and play compatible and addresses the fact that every competitor has at least 8 gears.

Above is a list of current 8 and 10 speed Aisin transmissions. This is wiki so take it for what it is worth, but @vanapagan could be on the right track.

Interesting little tidbit I found. Not sure if this is fact or just some automotive writer's hypothesis. (Emphasis mine)

    https://www.motorreviewer.com/engine.php?engine_id=192

It is difficult to say at this point how reliable this engine is because it has not yet become widespread; in fact, it is currently available only for the premium Lexus LS 500 model. But like 2.7L EcoBoost and 3.5L EcoBoost engines in Ford's model range, very soon, the 3.5-liter V35A-FTS twin-turbo engine will take a place under the hood in numerous Toyota models such as Toyota Land Cruiser, Toyota Tacoma, Toyota Tundra, etc. And then only time will tell how reliable this technically sophisticated engine is in the long run.

I can't see Toyota putting the same engine in the Tacoma as the Tundra (maybe a TRD PRO option?) Maybe this author knows something we don't? I'm not putting that much creedence into it but then again stranger things have happened.

Maybe the writer knows it will be used in more Toyota vehicles in the future but not which ones so he's just making a list, hoping one is right?

An 8-speed manual would be my preference. But I also wanted that 8L Hino diesel, so...

I could see the base 3.5 NA being in the Tacoma, and the Tundra (as well as the other big BOF SUV's) getting the turbo version. Maybe the TRD Pro Tacoma gets a single turbo or 2 small ones for a little boost. I'm hoping down the road Toyota does like Ford and has a high output version like the Limited and Raptor currently get. Just a little incentive to get the TRD Pro.

If the tundra isn't going to have an 8 cylinder option, I really don't think the Tacoma and 4runner will have a 6 cylinder. They'll end up with a 4 cylinder turbo in the 300-325hp range.
I'm still hoping they'll drop a 4.0 tt v8 in the trd pro tundras though. I know it's probably not going to happen but the recent 300 series leaks have shown a GR badge start/stop button on interior schematics. Seeing that brought back a small glimmer of hope for the tundra.

I'd have to disagree. Who and what are they buying all those replacement modules for? Collectability? No. It is because the original part failed and was replaced (probably with a just as crappy module to get a little further down the road).

A turbo six would certainly let them customize output without changing anything but a tune. I would imagine that if they overbuilt the Six the way they overbuilt the V8 to handle the supercharger that this could be a boon for buyers. Imagine a TRD pro with an extra 50 or 100hp from Toyota’s tuning preferences. Or better yet, imagine being able to reliably pump out an extra 50hp on your base tundra that has the same internals. That sounds appealing to me.

It is done electronically but they use a new module that they tweak and keep the original with the factory specs . That way if they need warranty work they simply unplug the new module and plug the original back in . Their way of thinking is that manufacturers will try to deny warranty work for almost anything .

The Ram forum is leaking over here. FYI if anyone ever buys a Ram, stay the hell away from those forums - I can't take that much stupid. Ram is the best hands down, people who have others are so blind. My Ram has no problems so no Ram ever has problems (Found multiple times in a thread about Cam failures). Toyota just fakes their numbers, they had frame issues in 2008 so they still do. Wait you own a Tundra too, you don't belong here your not a real Ram owner.

I just can't deal with the Ram forums. I jump in and out to watch for problems in the 1500's to see if I can prevent anything in ours, or to look up cool mods that the wife might like for her truck, but I can't bring myself to sign up like I am here.

With all due respect, if you replaced "Ram" with "Toyota" your post would fit well on this board.

There's been shades of it, but eventually reasonable people get in and are allowed to say their piece (whether it supports the Ridgeline or that Tundra still has cam tower leaks for some reason). Difference is the reactions to the reasonable posts - Ram they get belittled and driven away that they're flat out wrong while here they get left alone for the most part. Maybe there's good discussions there, but I haven't found them. Go in there and try to say that you can't go wrong with any of the 5 half tons, they're all pretty equal. Here you'll get some ribbing and some personal experiences, there many posts call that out as delusional - Ram is clearly the best. Not to mention the number of posts that essentially read: I don't have issues so there's no way you can have those issues. Like what kind of thinking is that?

I've been on there enough to know I'll never create an account there, yet here I am quite a bit. Online you're also going to have some strong opinions, but it's the reaction that is quite different to the dissenting ones on each forum that will keep me here and not there.

Not so much if they jump to a domestic 3/4 or 1 ton. But who in their right mind would jump from a Tundra to a domestic 1/2 ton?

Why would we be buying Tundras if we didn't think they're the be to own? If dollars are equal why would you not buy the best. Most of the ripping comes after someone rips the Tundra based on the platform age, then the numbers come out and show how equal the field is.

Yes there's some that go to the extreme, but most on here can agree the differences are so small that there's not a wrong choice just that the others you gamble more than with a Tundra.

Yes, we're Tundra fans here. But nobody who posts regularly on this forum is blindly cheering on the Tundra, like it sounds like they do on the Ram and F150 boards. And nobody I have seen is denying the (few) issues that the Tundra has had, including the leaking cam tower and the missing tranny cooler in the later models (though still EXTREMELY low number of catastrophic failures). And a lot of people don't like the entertainment system. Some of the members even acknowledge that they drive other non-Tundra trucks for various reasons.

Really? There may have been some light-hearted ribbing, though I haven't even seen a lot of that, no NOBODY has been "ripped to shreds." You sure you're posting to the right forum?

Can you just imagine how awesome it would be, but would never happen, if they released a 2022 Tundra with a 7 spd manual
