Tonneau Cover w/ Factory Cleat Rail

Purchasing a tonneau cover here shortly. Wondering if the factory cleat rail/cleats can be/if they should be relocated?

 

Yes there are small flat brackets to drop them lower. When you purchase make sure you have the option that specifies you have rails so they will send you the brackets

 

I think it depends on the brand. They used the rails to mount my ARE. Didn't move them.

Like another said it depends on the brand. For bakflips they have brackets that extend down. You drop the rails lower. It's basically a flat piece of metal about 2" wide x 3" or so long with 2 holes. 1 bolt goes in the existing threads, the other bolt goes through the rail and clears it out of the way for the clamps to install the cover

 

As said above, some brands require the rails to be lowered and some not. My tonneau is attached to the rails in the original location - no need to move anything, but I have seen others that require moving them down. did not like the idea of moving them because of the way the lowering brackets are so I specifically looked for a cover that can be used with the rails in the original location.

 

Gotcha. Looking at a Bak and see the options of with or without deck rail system. Appreciate it.

This is what the drop brackets look like. The attach to the original rail screw hole, and then the rail bolts to it in a lower location. I did not like that idea - it seems like those plates can bend, reducing the capacity of the rail.

 

It depends if you want to go hard of soft cover. I have a soft Rough Country cover. It connects to the rail in 2 minutes. Easy to take off and put back on if I need to for whatever reason, and the factory rail location is still used.

 

Going for a trifold, but I'll keep that in mind.

 

Yeah I need my brackets secure for a $10k track bike. The drop brackets look flimsy as hell.

 

I had my Rugged II cover installed on my 2020 Platinum by the Toyota dealer when purchased. As far as I know, the rails were not relocated & plenty of room for the cleats. It sits on top of the bed. I assume if it were a flush-fit cover, the rail would have to be lowered.

 

I have the Extang trifold that mounts to rails in original location. Didn't need to move them.

 

Just curious, I bought a tundra 2 weeks ago and had them throw in bed cleats as part of the purchase price. The dealer is now trying to say they’re only giving me one cleat because they are only sold in singles. Tell me this, when you order a truck from the factory with bed cleats does it come with a single cleat? Based on the pictures from build and price they look like they come in a set of 4 when ordered from the factory? That’s how it was on my Tacoma at least. The picture on Toyota’s website shows multiple cleats in my opinion but apparently the dealer thinks otherwise. Feels like they’re pulling shady dealer tricks... Any info would be appreciated.

 

I think they are telling you a story. Coincidentally I had never looked in my under seat storage for over 2 years and have been recently looking into upgrading my stereo and look what I found. Hopefully you can see the part number as well - clearly says 4 pack. Part # PT278-0C01B
