Question I'm not sure has been addressed yet. Do we have a picture of just how, exactly, the exte sion lines to the front cooler are supoosed to look in the engine bay? Specifically, with relation to the fender well and the power steering line? I left some slack but I'm not co vinced touching the well is right, not am I sure the tightness of the line is right if I reduce the slack to being it off.

A factory example and any clamps would be helpful.

This is just my OCD, btw and figured it could be helpful for others as well. The kit is amazing and an extremely liesurely install time of about 5 hours. I couldn't be more thrilled and look forward to lower numbers. I was concerned about knowing a trickle vs drip vs pour, but I think it was really straight forward. Harbor Freight for the 5mm allen socket and 1 3/8 step bit, fyi.

Pic of my lines for comment/review:

Looks good, that's just about the same slack I have in mine. You don't want the lines to touch the side engine walls. Of course you don't want the hose super tight either.

Copy that! Thanks! Everything about the kit and instructions were so color by number I apparently forgot how to think for myself. :)

You need or want any kind of online review or endorsement?

I don't have anywhere to post reviews besides here. I'm glad the install was simple and went well.

    Hello,
I installed the MHX kit from Nick today on my 19 Trunda. It went fairly smooth except I didn't see any grounding information when relocating horn. It shows how to ground horn on youtube video but It's not on written instruction neither I received grounding cable.
I was wondering If I need to ground horn!! I'd appreciate any info on this. Thank you.

I didn't see anything about it either. The original spot didn't have a grounding wire, it was just bolted on. You've moved the horn to a new location, it's still bolted on and IMO it's still grounded there via the frame.

I don't really honk my horn, no idea if it still works

The new location for the horn in the current instructions does not require a grounding wire as where it is bolted on the cross member provides a ground for the horn.

For those that live up North, did any of you pin the thermostat? we are worried it may get way too cold in winter up here.

Just installed, but also just had this conversation via direct message. I'm up in MA and decided to go unpinned for now since the temps are right at about 185. I kept the pin and will be monitoring the summer temps and might repin if they climb too much. Nice to have options.

The pin is not going to make a difference on how the cooler works. It's going to cool the trans fluid to it's maximum ability. Pinning it will increase the amount of time the fluid gets up to temp, that's it. In normal operation the thermostat remains closed until the fluid gets to a certain temp and then it remains open so it has no effect on how the cooler works. I only use the pin to check the fluid level, after that, I just let the system work as it was designed to work. YMMV

I’m not sure I agree, although I see the logic in your statement. The puck keeps 185ºF engine coolant constantly flowing in to equalize with the trans fluid. But if you’re just cruising and the TC is locked, the constant flow of cooled trans fluid *could* bring the temp down if your thermostat is pinned open. That is, I think the aux cooler could overwhelm the heat exchanger puck if it’s pinned open.

Mine is not pinned open. When my temps get to 195ºF Pan (which often means TC is 220-225ºF) the thermostat opens. It brings the pan back down to 185ish and then closes again. So my transmission doesn’t ever really get below engine coolant temp. But I would think that it would do that if you pin the thermostat open and have a constant flow of cooled fluid coming back into the transmission. I’m kind of speculating though.

I don't pin mine. I _want_ the transmission to come up to proper operating temperature. Let the thermostat control it, it should "pin" my cooler open when things are warmed up.

So many repeated questions about pinning the thermostat.... Look up a thermostat and how it works, then explain how there is ever any reason to pin the thing during use. It won't ever run any better than with it unpinned. It will just take longer to warm up to operating temp. Nick has explained this..... You can lead a horse to water...

I live in Canada and left mine unpinned. That's how Toyota did it back on my 08. Regardless I tow a 6000lb trailer in the summer and rarely did the temp go over 200, generally 190-195. Seems to pretty much run at 185 winter and summer empty once it gets up to temp.

Can the aux cooler running wide open defeat the puck's attempt to keep the transmission temp at 185? I would think so. If you want that, contrary to Toyota's design, pin it open. I don't want that, so mine is not pinned. But I see TC temps of 220ºF+ running unloaded on the highway. All conventional transmission temp wisdom says this is bad. Toyota says nope, ours is designed to run like that. I'm trusting Toyota on this issue, since pre-2019 trucks with the puck and aux cooler seem to be doing just fine. BUT...I can understand the hesitation some have for letting their TC regularly see 220+ with no load.

220 in the pan is a nope. The TC will fluctuate very frequently. The pan temps are what really matter.

An I have no clue where you are going or what you are talking about with the puck being defeated?

Puck being defeated is a bit of an overstatement for effect, I think. As the puck's job is to warm the fluid, you are making it's job much much harder if you pin the thermostat open and are running fluid through the cooler all the time. It will take way longer to get the fluid up to operating temp vs letting the thermostat work as designed and close off the cooler until operating temps are achieved by the puck.

The pinned-open thermostat doesn’t stop working against the puck once operating temp is achieved.

This is why I think it is possible for a pinned-open aux cooler to bring temps down below where the puck is trying to keep them. It is constantly bringing a higher volume of cooled fluid back in than the volume of fluid that passes through the puck.

Again, I don’t pin mine open. I want my transmission to operate just like a pre-2019 Tundra from the factory.

Yeah, that's possible as well. If that's the case it's even more of a reason to not pin it. Devils advocate, even if the puck could keep up once it was up to temp it would still take way way longer to get up to temp. That is reason enough to unpin it and let it work as designed.

My initial comment on this was just an expression of confusion and exasperation at the "controversy" of leaving it unpinned. Unpinned will never hurt it, but pinned open there is the possibility of running too cold. Super simple answer is to leave it unpinned.

I don't think it's a good idea to pin the thermostat open, the system was designed by Toyota to keep the tranny as close to proper temps as possible.

As far as I'm concerned, the only reason to pin the stat open is for setting the tranny fluid level.

Pretty sure the only reason for having the pin/unpin thing is for when changing/flushing trans fluid. It's the only way to ensure fluid flows through the cooler at lower temps.

Initial impression after some interstate time. Using the OBD/Fusion setup before I regeared and before tranny cooler I reached at least 211 F ATF pan temp on a mild day around 70 F. Below when a high temp light would trigger of course but that's no trailer, empty truck, but 37's and high profile being lifted. After regear and tranny cooler 191 F was the high observed on similar mild day but with stout headwind. The temp climbs to 188-191 with new tstat seemingly opening somewhere in that range and cooler brings it back down and the cycle continues. With the big tires and lift the regear helps with less shifting and ability to get out of tc drive thus less heat but for sure it's the cooler that's keeping temps in check. With 37's, summer weather, towing planned and hopes to keep longer term it didn't feel like passing up the remote cooler was a viable plan for my rig. No leaks - just the smell of the radiator black paint I used baking on the cooler. Will be interested to see how it does this summer. Thanks again for the kit!

I’m guessing the pre-19’s aren’t pinned open right? I’d prefer to have it work as close to factory as possible as we’ve seen the reliability of this trans in those setups.

Does the thermostat open as much when operating normally vs pinned. I imagine it may open a tad bit more when pinned, that would improve flow to heat exchanger and better cooling.

    Review of this cooler setup.

Pulled a Heartland Mallard 185 from KC to Table Rock Lake this week. Highest pan temp I saw was 208F, but only briefly. Pan temp stayed under 200F 99% of the time. Only while climbing Ozark hills would the pan temp break 200F.

Very satisfied with this kit. (My kit uses the Haynes heat exchanger).

Forgot to add...ambient was 60F on the way there and 50F on the way back. Also, I use a scangauge for pan and converter temps.
