this will be your most cost effective route. You will want to be able to steam milk to finish it off. I also have a nespreeso with Cuban espresso pods and it steams the milk it’s pretty fire.

nespresso with nespresso pods make good coffee. Easy and quick.
Or a Bialetti like posted above.

I also bought a frother on Amazon for $10 for those cappuccinos or latte

now if you want to taste real espressos..a trip to Italy is in order.
go to a bar and ask for a espresso standing up. costs around 1 euro and best espressos ever.

    This is a rabbit hole.

Bialetti's are nice, but not really espresso, and come out with a bit of a burnt taste.

First, and only, actual machine for me is a DeLonghi my wife got me this past Christmas...pretty sure it was in the $100 price range.

It works, but not very consistent, and has some shortcomings for sure.

There are reasons why expensive machines are....expensive.

This is the way to go. My parents immigrated to the US from southern Italy in the 50's. Drank espresso twice a day. This is the only style of espresso maker we use. I bought them a $1000 dollar machine years ago and they never used it.
Start with one of these. Buy GOOD coffee, I like illy. Play around with amount of coffee and water to get what you want.
cuban espresso is usually a thimble sized amount of very concentrated coffee. Try and find Italian specialties shops or a cuban specialty shop near you they may have brands of coffee you can get other places.

With espresso machines. You get what you pay for. Suck it up get a decent one, and you will have it for 20 years. Drinking one now. Best high quality machine without a lot of gadgets is
Gaggia Classic (about $400 online at wholelattelove.com). Next purchase will be a burr grinder best for the money Rancillo Rocky at about $300. They are the Tundras of the espresso world.

Don't put that pot in the dishwasher. Also don't put it back together if it's not completely dry it can get musty.

I've had that one for about 6 years, great little machine. I like running Illy through it.

I really enjoy watching videos from James Hoffmann, a guy on YouTube who is a coffee wizard. One video of interest would be: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1LUkfpTtu0

I will warn you though, as you build a more and more refined palette for espresso, all other coffee will become "ruined"...

    This! ^^^
My first trip to Italy when I got home and made a cup of coffee I took 2 sips and dumped it. I was pissed because I could make espresso at home, but when I'm at the office I couldn't drink that office crap anymore.

Been thinking about it all day. I picked up a can of Lavazza last night and pulled my machine put of hibernation. Not as tasty as Illy but it's pretty good.

    Yep.

DeLonghi is the way to go if you're good in to $300 range.

Same. I drank your standard crap Folger's until trips to Turkey and Italy; now I *have* to have the good stuff. (Mainly because I've got a sliding hernia; and the good stuff has far less acid and therefore doesn't bother me.)

Illy is the best, its really common in Italy so it must be pretty legit.

I take back what I said about the Lavazza, I went to make a little cup this morning and remembered that my Delongi comes with a single shot and a double shot. I had a double yesterday so no wonder it was acidic and had me bouncing off walls. Had a single today and it was very nice. The double is better to use if you are making a latte or something.

This is one of my pandemic muses, and I really miss Cuban coffee. Since I'm the only one in the house that drinks it, Baratza Encore + Aeropress for coffee. And a 1PRESSO JX Pro + Flair for manual crema shots. In the summer, affogato (6:49)!

Making great espresso isn't cheap, the grinder is one of the most important elements, and you need a manual or machine that puts out 9bar+ pressure. The saying is marry your grinder, date your machine.
