I have truck commitment issues--Tundra vs Ford

Based on the fact that I pretty much only see Rams in rural areas and less affluent neighbourhoods, I'm thinking these guys must be able to buy them the cheapest (or think they're the cheapest, maybe).

 

It blows my mind. One vehicle in particular had a massive chunk of metal grenade out the side of the rear diff with 15k miles on it. Some of them you hit the turn signal, then the headlights go out and the fog lights come on but that was it, no turn indicator. Then one I remember would go all out crazy wipers full speed, flashers and horn randomly while driving. Another would have major transmission malfunctions whenever the A/C was on and basically every Chrysler made transmission was failing (sounded like it was processing marbles) under warranty (less than 36k miles).

 

What years? I thought they were using ZF transmissions now that are (supposedly) more reliable.

For a couple years. I use and abuse my vehicles. Was constantly spending 2000-2500 every 2-4 months on repairs. Half that was my fault for bringing a show truck into the oilfield but half was just Ford being Ford. Don’t think I’ll ever own a Ford or a dodge again. ‍♂️
We will see how the tundra does. Right now it’s the Chevy half ton for the win.

 

Just had a 2014 Ram 1500 Laramie. Thing was sweet, fully loaded, awesome interior, I had just put a 6" ProComp coilover lift on in August. Then started having unexplainable stuttering issues. Brought it to half a dozen shops and dealers and no one could figure it out. Got quoted a new transmission for $5500. Had multiple other issues with the truck over the 3 years I owned it, but man the interior of that truck with the heated/cooled leather was leaps and bounds better. Anyways, cried a little, traded it in and got a Tundra. Zero issues so far, which is enough to make me happy. Though I do wish it had Auto 4wd or at least a smooth transition when switching to and from 4wd, as well as an interior that didn't look like it was from 2005. But at least I think I can put some faith into the Tundra's longevity.

 

I bought a new Ram 1500 in 2012 before I got home the thing was giving me trouble after two years
and many trips for warranty work I traded to a 2014 was supposed to be way better. My wife getting in to the passenger door shifted enough that it wouldn't close took the paint off where it hit. Hinge had to be tightened before we felt. Had multiple problems again with this one.

Just about switched to a 2016 Ford but where my daughter works they had lots of problems with the new fords and her brother in law a loyal Ford technician didn't recommend getting one with what he was seeing. I like the look and the way the Ford drove....nice truck in many ways.

I am not loyal to one brand but have to say being this is my first Tundra and will have owned it 5 years this coming June with no problems at all with over 100k I am impressed.
Not so with the Rams. By100k both my Rams had major front end work and the 2014 had to have paint work because it was starting to rust .

 

I was watching Tim on Pickup Truck plus SUV Talk on You tube a couple weeks ago. It was the Ford vs Toyota discussion. As I was watching a flatbed drove past my house with a Ford on the deck. Tonight, I was out riding my mountain bike and rode past my highschool, I never left the neighborhood, and there was a truck sitting in the bay with a scanner hooked to it, yes it was a F150.

I have had 1 Ford and had to call the Tow Truck, I have owned 7 Toyotas and never a major repair. I can deal with shitty fuel economy, but can't stand for poor reliability.

 

statics suck. Ford sales over 900K F150's a year Toyota sales 100K Tundra's a year. So you need to see 9 busted Fords to equal one busted Tundra. I owned a F250 and went to a Tundra. Only thing about F250 that was absolutely stellar was resale. Drove 2.7 years and MADE $500. Bought new also. It was fun driving for about 30 minutes than started to wear you out. Only reason to own a diesel is if you are towing 8 hours a day over 20Klbs. Complexity of the engine and emission is insane. turning radius horrific and straight axle death wobble (how can Ford get away with that?) Appearance wise F250 look incredible. It had it share of ticks and clicks but the Tundra appears to be developing some also. Diesel get 1 mpg better than tundra but diesel cost 15% more than unleaded so its a wash. In the end I love the Tundra and if ever required a diesel I would go GM with independent front suspension.

 

If one needs a BIG truck, one looks to Ford and GM - not Toyota.

Fuck GM and FCA/Chrysler/Ram. They took taxpayer bailout money and didn’t pay it all back.

1% of 100,000 is 1,000 and 1% of 900,000 is 9000. So if both models had 1% failure rate then Toyota would have 1,000 tows per year and Ford 9,000 tows per year. Yet they have same failure rate.

 

Your math is correct but if you look at actual reliability statistics you will see that the Tundra is FAR more reliable than the F one shitty, ergo their actual failure rate is much higher.

toyota is good but you’ve fallen into the mythical trap of paying more for less because of a term, “QDR”— If Ford didn’t innovate as well as they do, they’d have perfect reliability as well.

Toyota banks on the faithful tuner crowd to buy their vehicles while their profit margins make them the richest car company in the world.

Have you seen Fords latest innovation?? Super rusty differentials on brand new machines. It's all thanks to their innovative lack of corrosion inhibitors... If Ford could do anything with half the work ethic found in Toyota Motor Corp. then they might produce a competitive product reliability-wise. Innovation means nothing if your innovations don't stand the test of time and won't hold up with normal use.

 

It’s not just innovation and frequent updates/redesigns that hurt Ford quality. QDR is simply not a priority with Ford.

^ if the tundra actually tried to improve/innovate instead of rolling out the same truck since 2007 they’d have issues too. wait til that next gen tundra comes out and see what happens. I ran the dog shit out of a 2010 F150 4.6 and had no major repairs up to 154K miles when I traded.

 

Why did you purchase a TUNDRA - if the f150 served you so well? Just curious!

 

I mean, I *KINDA* agree with that 'innovation' statement. They're so concerned (as is everyone else) about delivering on features, towing, gas mileage, etc., that they're innovating on all THOSE fronts, and I mean, that's great.

It's just that the one front they're NOT innovating on is the reliability front. lol

 

Funny story, my commute changed so traded f150 in for a CPO camry hybrid. Hadn't even gotten an oil change on it and i was rear ended on my way home from the casinos in pouring rain by an 18 wheeler ,totaled it. Got a 2015 F150 and sure enough 3 months later i was rear ended in Dallas in dead-stop rush hour traffic, guy behind me was eating as he got on the on-ramp not paying attention. Smacked me doing like 50MPH. My BS insurance (Farmers) wouldn't total the truck, had rear frame cut/replaced along with entire bed,bumper,tailgate, etc. Around $15,000 in repairs. First time i got it back, they painted it the wrong color white. I told them send it back in. After that i was convinced it was tainted as it should have been totaled. October 2018 i see 0% interest on Tundra so for shits and grins i stopped by and asked for a trade #. They gave me like $2K over what i owed so i said F it let's roll.

 

I ran the dog shit out of a 1985 Mustang GT with only one major problem. The clutch had to be replaced. I didn’t (and still don’t) hold that against Ford because that car was driven very, very hard. It was a well built machine that was a joy to drive. No way in hell I would buy any new Ford product. They’ve cut far too many corners in an effort to remain profitable.

 

My brother's friend had a late 80s or early 90s "Rustang" that he had to Bo Duke because the doors wouldn't open.

 

That’s one vehicle that Ford has always seemed to get right. I’ve owned a 92 Couple, 94 GT, 2007 GT and all 3 of them were great vehicles. All well built.

 

Ford is junk. I am not arguing that. I literally had to wrap black electrical tape around the door jamb to prevent rattles on a 2 month old truck. Oh I found out about this trick on the 2017 f250 forum. fast forward a year later I drop off the boat get all pissed because of this horrible knocking noise. next day I remember to check my tape it had worn through. wtf. You will notice Toyota has spring loaded bumpers on their door to keep pressure on the door latch. I rode around the neighborhood looking for the most annoying ticking noise right by my ear. stuffed the "b" pillars full of pillow stuffing. Then got a recall about the seat belt retractors catching the 1 square inch padding they used to cover the mechanism during some accidents. Oh the PDM rims coated crap would flake off the wheel so god forbid you ever remove a balance weight. cameras fog over in about 18 months, blah blah blah.

 

Ah I had a 90 GT it was great
