2020 LandCruiser comes with transmission cooler, why not Tundra?

Without knowing exactly what shift logic is changed by putting the shifter in S mode I wouldn't take that bet, particularly in T/H mode where we know for a fact that (at a minimum) AI Shift is not active in S6 while it is active in D.

Do you know exactly what changes are made in the shift logic when the vehicle is put in S mode other than capping the gear that it can shift into?

2: Selecting shift ranges using S mode restricts the upper limit of the possible gear ranges, controls engine braking forces, and prevents unnecessary upshifting.

    Per: http://www.ttundra.com/48/automatic_transmission.html

Per my previous S"4"to D comment. Unfortunately that's a dual variable that cannot really be used as an apples to apples comparison (IMO).

AI is not always programmed to have X variable in mind but rather a system as a whole.

Example: they might map a downshift once a prelim temp threshold has been reached. But until a programmed variable/threshold has been reached, general powertrain performance, based off rolling sensor feedback, does better in Y mapping.

This banter surrounding Hoe/Tall mode is all well and good but we're completely neglecting the addition of Auto LSD to the equation.

    Hoe/Tall + D/S123456 + Auto Lysergic acid diethylamide = perfect ATF temperature.

Agree. Can’t find Hoe/Short mode though. Is there a reference in the owners manual?
I remember having perfect ATF temperature one day on my way home from a concert at Three Rivers Stadium circa 1990.

Everyone knows the perfect ATF temp can only be achieved by adding an ad-hoc aftermarket cooler to the 2019-2021 Tundra. I feel sorry for those sub 2019 models with the dinky factory hybrid ATF cooler.

He gets it, it's only the gear that matters, not what button or mode you're in. The persistent 'S' users have simply restricted their gear selection range.

Except that those aftermarket coolers are even better than the pre-2019 factory coolers. I would only feel sorry for those who choose to live without one.

I have mine. I haven't installed it yet and it rides in the bed of the truck. ATF temps are down 17 degrees already.

What he's really saying: "We found an easy way to save $200 in manufacturing cost and most Tundra owners have no idea what a transmission cooler is."

We have plenty of anecdotal evidence from Tundra owners showing increased transmission temps.

I'd like to know where the performance hit is WITH a cooler. He conveniently omits that.

Am I missing the point here , if Toyota removed the cooler, then its probably not needed. Your truck comes with a 5year/60k mile warranty on the powertrain. If Toyota was worried about failure they would have kept it on other than waste more money on warranty claims. Also the Toyota extended warranty on the tundra are insanely cheap.

Getting high trans temp alarm in middle of trip sucks. the thermal efficiency penalty of a cooler is negated by a fully external cooler not tied to the condenser or radiator. Guess I should have worked for Toyota as an engineer but doubt they pay as well as my current petrochemical employer. Toyota knows 95% don't tow and therefore wont be an issue, the other 5% that do tow 1/2 of them will make it through warranty. Good financial move by Toyota. They are in the business of selling transmissions. I saw 230F trans temps hauling an ATV in the bed in mine going over the houston ship channel bridge the only hill in hundreds of miles. I have zero doubt hauling my boat to florida in June I would see temps well in excess of 250F. Am i supposed to pull over every 20 minutes till the temp light goes off? I put aftermarket cooler on havent seen a temp above 195F hauling or towing anything. If I sale truck I will remove the cooler system. If I keep truck it will increase longevity.

Well, there was a change to refrigerant on MY19+.

With that said, the OE cooler pre MY19 was tied into the condenser. With that, I going to venture and say there might have been issues tied into the HVAC system.

Did you pull the pin that leaves the thermostat open (so that it’s closed until pan hits 195ºF)?

I pulled the pin on mine, and I can still see 206ºF pan 224ºF TC if driving aggressively up long/steep highway grades in D. I just wanted to see how high it would go. There is a long climb up I24 from Nashville, TN, toward White House. I think mine is working as it should.

I will probably pin it open if I tow a boat longer distances. Lots of hills/long grades around here.

He has an aftermarket cooler. All the aftermarket cooler kits come with the pre-2019 OEM parts required to hook up the cooler (like the Toyota thermostat and hard lines).

At least I haven’t seen any that mate to the transmission in any other way. 2019+ Tundras come with a thermostat-shaped plate blocking the in/out for the cooler lines.

I know we've seen the documentation from Toyota saying that tow/haul doesn't work in S mode but I'm curious if anyone can confirm if it still increases the throttle sensitivity.

    I'm driving right now.

Yes TH + S still as increased sensitivity and higher shift points. Tip-in downshift sensitivity still present as well.

I have the Toyota transmission thermostat. After I installed I have never seen temps above 200F even pulling my boat around Houston (Very Hot) but very flat. It didnt matter if I was in D or S5. In D the transmission hunted. Boat weighs 5Klbs and I drive 70-72 mph in a attempt not to get run over. When I had a F250 trailer limited towing speed to about 85 mph, with Tundra much less mass and much more soft suspension 70 feels right. Power is not the issue! Once transmission stabilizes my trans temp is always above 180F.

Your right of course. I should have but forgot to mention that the upside of towing in s mode is that you get to decide what upper limit gear to tow in and not the truck ai. I can't imagine towing through the mountains in D, for me it's generally 5th or 4th with T/H.

By the way I did add an external cooler.

Based on this and the guys who report lower temperatures in S4 when towing, I'm planning to just tow in S4 with T/H on unless I'm towing something light like the small aluminum trailers I occasionally rent or my dad's boat.
