Sorry if it's been asked specifically, I've been digging through the archives all morning. I've read on other sites that a few folks have had the bilsteins 5100 fail where they mount due to the adjustability (a clamp failed). Is this common? Has anyone Elise heard of this happening?

I'm trying to figure out my leveling strategy and just evaluating risk of either this or a coil spacer. And since this site is the best, I figured I'd ask.

    Thanks in advance.

5100 > coil spacer even with the spring seat ring failure IMO

Havent seen many in any 5100s fail like that personally.

It depends on frequency. I'll take premature wear over a potential accident.

Then you need to do more research on spacer lifts, talk about problems...

In my post I also mentioned that I have yet to read about (personally) 5100 failures of any nature. I have read quiet a bit - not everything so I'm more than sure 5100s have failed, I just have yet to really remember any I have read about. I'm running 5100s and am very happy

Some Mods :) See build thread for details
Had 5100s in the Toytec Ultimate fully adjustable setup on for 2 years with no problems at all.
Have see failures from people on facebook but not as frequent as those that add the spacers over stock stocks.

I agree I do need to do more homework. I want to run the 5100s, that would be my preference. No one would argue performance. I almost wish they weren't adjustable, eliminating a potential point of failure.

The type of damage that people reported, complete disassembly with fender sitting on a tire, kinda scares me. I'm not sure that type of risk exists with a coil spacer (I won't speak for top spacer since it seems there could be a similar risk depending upon construction quality). Although, I could be completely wrong.

I'm wondering how much failure depends on installation too.

Any coilover is much better than an over the coil spacer.

Give any suspension time or human error, there will be problems and/or failure. It's inevitable.

We live in an age or bitching where you hear and see (social media, internet, etc) of things failing more than good things. Many people on this forum have bilsteins and have had no problems.

    Chances are, you'll be satisfied.

I have a 2016. Had 5100'S installed. They were set at 1,5" Leveled truck out. I tow a 25 travel trailer. I do alot of 4 wheeling out at Big Shell in really soft sand. I have not had any type of issues with mine. I run 20 in rims with 33 in tires. My friend installed spacers. Main difference to me is I think 5100's ride a hell of alot better

I have 5100's and ive ran mine hard enough to blow bushings, compress a stock spring and throw my alignment multiple times. No issue's with the Bilsteins.

I cringe whenever I watch that video, not for what happens to the truck but for the passenger. I bet he suffered a compression injury to his back, and that hurts likes a mofo.

I only had 5100s (top setting) on my truck for around 7K miles, but I put them through the paces a few times and they handled everything like a champ. I'm no suspension guru but I would never run spacers over them...

Bilstein 5100 was redesigned after a few failures (if you see examples of failures, chances they were from several years ago). I have not heard of any failures due to the design flaw after the redesign. I would feel comfortable using them or recommending them. They are definitely superior to spacer leveling kits.
