I'm taking my young bride to Scotland in May for our anniversary. I got brave and decided to rent a car rather than do the public transportation thing. I'm a little nervous about driving on the "wrong" side of the road. Any of y'all ever driven in Scotland? Tips? Suggestions?

I'm thinking maybe this is the way to go ...

    yep....tank it.

i'd definitely be a little wary, but i'm sure it'll get better once you drive a day or two.

just drive slow and keep thinking "right is left.....left on red is OKAY, right on red is WRONG!!"

Good luck and hope you get insurance options! LOL

I would not advise turning left on red...that's NOT allowed and will get the boys in blue on your ass in a heartbeat! Red means STOP simple as that!
Besides once you are behind the wheel 'on the wrong' side it's easy...the driver is always on the side next to where the oncoming traffic is coming from...no matter where you drive.
Biggest issue you are likely have is roundabouts, but if you just think and look at what the other traffic is doing, piece of cake and aids traffic flow IMHO, however they now seem to like traffic lights at roundabouts too...this is confusing but driving with due care and attention and being aware and NOT distracted is the key anywhere.
Good luck! and No you do not need a tank, it's not Iraq or Afghanistan.....

Oh one more thing, gas works out at around $7 a gallon!!!!, so get a small compact for a rental, 75mpg is very common in Europe!!!

    so
So.....you can't turn on a red light (the equivalent of our right on red when clear) "across the pond"???

that sucks. But I would have to agree with you on roundabouts. it's efficient as hell!

    ...and there is more!
Speed cameras are everywhere, I mean like everywhere. Unmarked cop vans with laser and radar are numerous.
Speed limits are rigid; 70mph means 70mph, NOT 74/75 and 50mph is 50mph same deal. In towns and cities 30 and 40 are common...do not exceed these either.
Drinking and driving is taboo.....1 pint (20oz and not 16oz US Style) and you are over the limit!!!, it's not exactly 0mg, but damned near it (I guess a slice of Aunt Bessie's rum cake would be fine?).....penalties are harsh and jail time is not uncommon, big fines and bans are your medicine!!
Apart from that, it's all good, hahahaha...have fun!!!:amen:

yeah... they don't eff around with Drunk Drivers over there. There's no excuse with taxis & public transport options. Comments about Speeding are also true... It's possible to lose your license over there within an hour of driving from Heathrow. Speed cameras aren't marked, you just get a nice fine in the mail 2 weeks later & minimum of 3 penalty points. (lose your license at 12) Although, they rarely will chase US citizens for the fines which is why when i'm home, i always rent cars on my american licence.

    Other random things...
Rental cars default to stick shift. If you want an automatic - you gotta ask for one.
Diesel cars, may sound like shit, get about 70mpg hwy. (European gallons are a little bigger)
You can't "undertake" on the motorway/interstate. You can only pass on the right.
Motorcycles can split lanes... if you're in stop/start traffic check for suicidal bikers splitting lanes at 70mph if you're changing lanes.

Lastly, Scotland's beautiful... you def need a car & a pair of hiking boots to explore it to it's fullest potential. If you're flying into London, look at taking an overnight train to Scotland rather than driving... because...

Driving over there is a pain in the ass. I hate it. Most people drive like morons. Traffic is beyond ridicuous. My rule was, more than 2 hour drive and i'd either train or fly.

    Lastly, have fun!

If you know how to drive a stick shift, make sure you rent one. You'll pick it up quickly and may never get another chance.

Yeah until you get to one where nobody knows what the fuck they are doing lol. Then its just annoying. Its kind like a 4 way stop when everyone gets there at the same time and everyone all of a sudden goes brain dead lol

Let the locals drive you around. Don't need that distraction on your vacation. Definitely take pics. The scenery is awesome, and the architecture on the churches is amazing. Oh yeah I forgot to mention the best thing.....Beer! Enjoy .

Thanks for all the tips, advice and humor! I did not know about the speed cameras and the strict speed limits. They tried those in Texas some years back but got tired of picking the buckshot out of them. Didn't know about the prevalence of stick shift, either, but I grew up driving a stick so no problem. What the hell, I may be crazy but I'm gonna go for it. Will advise if I need bail money. Will also send lots of pics.

What everyone else said is true! Be aware of the smaller roads, and roundabouts. After a few days you'll be fine it's easier then you think. Enjoy

I was just there in September, we rented a car straight from the airport and took off to the Ilse so Islay to hit some scotch distillerys. Once we got out of the city it was a lot easier to get ahold of. Just make sure you have a good navigator and realize you will miss some turns and that it is not a big deal! You can always catch the next one and flip around and come back, no need to add stress to the drive when you are already on the wrong side of the road!

I enjoyed the coutryside the most and loved the little town of Port Ellen. Once back in the city we ditched the car immediately and trained everywhere though. It was a great trip and would definitely go back!

Shifting with my left hand took some getting used to. If I took my left hand off of the shifter, my right hand would smack the door the next time it was time to shift. Also the roundabouts took a lot of getting used to. If you're staying in the larger cities really public transportation is the way to go. Glasgow and Edinburgh and the surrounding areas have excellent train service. If you're looking for the country side or highlands, and you should be, driving is a must. Make sure you try the scotch, local ales and pubs.

The people are great, but they really do talk like this.

I drive a lot in the UK...always remember to look the opposite direction, whether driving or walking across a street.

And once you starting thinking everything backwards, it's a piece of cake. Have fun...

Especially the walking across the street. I was there for about a year, and then when I got home I had to learn it all over again. Best just to keep your head on a swivel.

The Doune castle is also pretty cool. It's where a lot of Monty Python and the Holy Grail was filmed. Rent the headphones for the self guided tour. It's narrated by one of the group, can't remember which one and includes sound clips from the scenes filmed where you are. The Trojan rabbit, knights of the round table, French taunting...
