2022 Tundra

Modifying the 5.7 and sticking a 10spd behind it would boost sales numbers quite a bit imo. Buyers that tow frequently will be pushed to other manufacturers for this very reason. The bad thing is Toyota hasn't and never will aim to take on the big 3's sales numbers so losing the daily to weekly towing crowd isn't going to hurt their feelings.

If they really wanted to put a hurting to the domestic trucks we'd see a v8, ttv6, and something like a 4.0 i6 diesel. Throw a hybrid option on all 3 and you've got your world beater

 

The rest of those vehicles were designed and built in Japan. Maybe if Mike designed them, it would be the same story.

This is why I can't see Toyota dumping the V8 completely. I wasn't planning on replacing my 2017 TRD PRO for 10 years, but without a V8 option, it won't be a Toyota UNLESS there are no V8s to be had. May just keep my Tundra till they take my driver's license away...

 

My work truck is a crew cab long bed f350 (which I daily drive on occasion) No issues parking it. It’s 2.5’ longer than a current crew max. I don’t get that fear of being able to park it logic. Should I never haul a trailer because I won’t be able to park that either?

 

5.7 with 8-10 speed would be awesome. It’s night and day when driving a Ram 6.4 hemi with the zf 8 speed vs ford 6.2 with 6 speed. I can only imagine how great the tundra would be with an 8 or 10 speed

 

I rather have drums in the back. More surface to grip for stopping power and to protect brakes from dirt and rocks getting caught between pads and rotors.

 

I would think the same thing. It doesn't make sense to completely go away from a V8, but all evidence points to the fact that they will, at least in the short term. Based on that lonnnng TFLtalk video posted yesterday, it seems as though Toyota is all set to turn the Tundra into an oversized Ridgeline in looks and functionality.

It reassures me that I won't be wasting money on a new 1/2 ton anytime soon, unless GMC somehow blows me away with their interior redesign for 2022. That probably won't happen. The golden age of 1/2 tons started in '07 and looks like it may end in 2022. The golden age of muscle cars really only went from '65 to '71, so it more than doubled that. Hang on to your 5.7L people, they are the today's 427s and 454s, built just before admissions standards changed and the entire muscle car industry went to crap.

 

To each their own I guess, I hate drums completely just like carbs I see no advantage whatsoever to drums even in the most extreme environments

 

I own my Tundra and a Ram 5.7 with the 8 speed, and all the extra gears do is keep the RPM's high when accelerating and right at prime RPM when cruising (side note, the Ram is currently getting worse fuel mileage than the Tundra). The 5.7 has more than enough power to compensate for the fewer gears. The extra gears may be worth 1-2 MPG at most and I have never felt the Tundra ever drops out of the power band when hauling.

 

I'm not sure where you are, but around here there is no way a long bed F350 would ever fit in mall/office parking garages. In fact one reason I started out with my 2008 Crew Max and recently went to a 2021 was that it was that I can park it virtually anywhere.

 

Lucky you, I can't even park my Tundra in half the parking garages around here - it's too tall. I've had a few scares with the antenna touching concrete. So I don't even try anymore, it's outside parking all the time so 2.5' more is no problem.

 

I liked how it was more responsive and never bogged down in the final gear when driving in town vs the 6 speed trannys that get to 6th gear ASAP. Just my personal experience. I highly doubt I’ll get the 2022 tundra or move back down to a half ton again, but want to see the damn thing already

 

Agreed. If Ford can do 400/400+ on the 5.0 with similar gas mileage to the 3.5 Ecoboost, a few tweaks on that 5.0 IS-F engine could do the same. Or even add the D4S technology to the 5.7.

I've seen that video and his reasons are complete bullshit from a market and engineering standpoint. They just cheaped out on the Tacoma and kept fundamentally the same rear axle and brakes they had been using rather than spending the R&D money. Mike might not have made that decision, so you can't blame him necessarily. It has nothing to the with locker or ATRAC. Very few Toyota models have a factory locker in the US (or globally), but all of the offroad worthy ones do have ATRAC. ATRAC came out in 2000 for the 100 series Land Cruiser and eventually made its way into the other platforms (Prado, HiLux, 4Runnner, Tacoma, Tundra, Etc). Other brands also employ similar traction control systems for off-roading.

He claimed they run drums in the rear because most Tacoma owners don't tow a lot and that they are "better" off-road due to being less exposed. Neither of these reasons hold water.

The Towing argument makes no sense since the Corolla has rear disc brakes and it is not even intended to tow. Same with a just about every other sedan, crossover, and SUV on the market. You don't need disc brakes just for towing. Also everyone of the Tacoma's competitors have rear discs and they are going for the same market and use case.

The off-roading excuse is also easily debunked. All of the vehicles below are marketed/intended for off road use and have rear disc brakes.

I could keep going, but you get the point. Again Mike might not have made that decision or even liked it, but he has to answer to someone. The fact that Toyota did that with the Tacoma is why some people, myself included, are not sure how the 4th gen Tundra is going to turn out. Sometimes Toyota is too conservative with their product updates.

 

The corolla is a good example because the disc brakes on that are very new. Just 1 or 2 generations ago the corolla had drums. Further evidence that drums on the Tacoma is Toyota simply trying to squeeze every last penny out of the R&D budget to develop that axle all those years ago.

 

I was at the boat ramp this weekend with a guy I'd never met before he was there with his 5.6L titan, 2018 I think he said it was. He asked me about my mileage on my 2011 5.7. I told him, 15.5-17.5 town/highway and about 11 towing the boat (21' searay with a v8 in it 5L 305). He said I wished I got that mileage. he said he's at 8 towing and lucky if he hits 14 normally around town. His boat looked a little bit bigger, but not that much. So, I guess it's all relative. He said he likes his Titan, but would prefer a Tundra. But, it was only a couple yrs old, so he'd be hanging on it for a while.

 

That matches the experience I had with my Titan.

 

My titan was nice other than a shimmy it had on the highway. I thought getting a tundra would relieve me of my worries, boy was I wrong. Hoping the new one will impress

You must have stock tires to get that mileage. I get 13-14 mpg

When the hell is this thing going to be revealed? Good grief! Toyota is missing the boat. Some folks are gonna use their stimulus checks for cars, they should put a lure out there in the water for potential truck buyers. This thing should be getting hype articles about it daily.
