Put about 100 miles on the Ric Flair Air Box Job since doing the mod. No CEL. OBD numbers look good in terms of Short Term Fuel Trims. MAF was set on cfm instead of gfm which I was used to, but from memory the cfm numbers seem in line from when I used that calibration. I don’t have graphs to show.

Definitely notice more power in the low end when in spirited accelerations. Mid/High End... a slight betterment can be felt. I’ll know more in terms of MPG on the next fill up. I’ll buy a new box if the MPG really goes south.

Was a little worried because as far as my research nobody has done this. All the concern about air flow everyone has and this spot is the main blockage point. I get the MAF and Turbulence Factor concern with the area so tight. Took a chance based on Intake Theory: Square Pipe bad and Tapered Pipe good.

I’ll report back some more after a few weeks driving, but right now she is real peppy in the City low end. Engine sounds/acts/idles its normal smoov self.

I’ll post some pics of the final job after the Toy 103 FIPG that smoothed out the rim scratches. Current Air Filter is a Toy OEM (important to reduce turbulence the experts say) with about 18k miles on it. Everything else is stock Air Box with the 12 Hole Denso Injectors.

MPG 16.5 in Rural Type Highway driving with some City driving on Winter Blend Gas. No ill effects from what I can see so far.

5 more days of City Type driving and no CEL. Might add a little more Flair on the intake tip in the fender well just to see how far it will stretch and fold. Looking at Fuzeit Caulking the pipe penetration into the box to seal it off from Hot Engine Air. The caulking adds a little sound dampening, as well.

Interesting that this came back up.
    I keep getting alerts.

I never did get one personally. Probably won’t at this point, got better things to spend $200 on.

    Nice job.

So far mine has been for free. Looking to Open/Flair the Intake Tip a bit more and grind some more off the MAF Tube portion.

Went back and tried to flair the Intake a bit more. She budged a little, but didn’t make a whole lot of difference. In the end with the stretching, she is enlarged more than factory and the MAF Port is MUCH smoother.

In theory, all this should help. Whether it does or not I can’t say I feel it. Also, caulked up the Intake Pipe around the box for better flow/less leak around the pipe.

Bottom pic is the cleaned up MAF Porting that I didn’t capture last go around. Just used some Toy FIPG to fill the scratches and wiped clean.

Mine came with the K&N kit installed. Not sure if it does anything but it sounds cool. I replaced the element with a non-oil washable cone.

If I didn't have the secondary filter to prevent fuel vapor escape, I'd see about doing something like PHM has to the airbox lid.

I'm considering adding a K&N filter. It'd basically be a TRD setup if I did (TRD uses oiled air filters made by AFE for them iirc).

I think my box is suppose to have a secondary filter, but it is not there. I know I didn’t remove it anytime in the past 20 years because I always had others doing the tune up stuff until recently. I’ve heard other members say they just remove that charcoal filter without ill effects.

I don't think they came with them until the VVT-i motors, which also use a different MAF sensor and airbox.

The charcoal filter can be removed with no ill effect. It’s just there so fuel vapors don’t come out the air box when the trucks off... (because that’s totally a major issue, not)

    Yep. I'm aware.

I just haven't, as I may throw a K&N filter in. The extra may be good to catch any excess oil.

I've done the same for both my 2008 Tundra and 2014 Fj. My own 3 inch added air intake for double the suction. Easy and cheap mod.

A cai won’t net you any noticeable power, but the sound effect are cool. I been down this road and it’s a dead end. I had an 06 350z I started with bolt ons and ran the dyno’s. Saw little to no increase in performance, but when I installed a vortex blower and started spraying water methane things got fun! 69279E47-D8DA-4DAB-AC88-CADBD2335FAC.jpg

Cold Air intakes remind me of something you'd see on an infomercial. I feel like Billy Mays would have sold them. They promise a lot but don't actually do much.

I open the front passenger side window closest to the air box, and get the same great sound effects and performance gains. It makes me happy. :anonymous:

Does that have any affect on your mpg's? A bit concerned about that.

I did make one upgrade to my air box, I siliconed a piece of wire mesh over the inlet tube from the fender to the box to keep critters from nesting there. I consider this a performance mod, pics available upon request. ;)

I’ll be more worried about your Transmission Temps guys.

Looks like you’ve both run out of reading material about suing Toyota for lack of Coolers.

You might notice that was already mentioned some in the prior 3 pages if you didn’t suffer from skim reading. You’ll also notice we spent very little to none (in my case) monies on this. Kinda like an freebie experiment. Nothing lost and nothing gained in my case but in theory rounded ports are better.

We’ll never know either way unless I post a video about it and you might believe!
