Ok, lets look at this - Gas prices are as follows roughly: South Africa $2.62/gallon, Australia $1.402/liter, Thailand $1.128/liter. So gas prices are cheaper than they are in Canada in some places. Import duties and taxes - not really much of an issue to go from Hilux to Tundra if they actually made them there, and changing engines doesn't change it for the Hilux.

So your theory has a few holes in it. I'm sure lots of people want a big V8 there, but as what you quoted said they don't need them, and we don't need them here. I'm just glad we get 450 HP variants and not 200 HP variant which would do the job that's required.

“Game changer” would be a HD 3/4 ton NA or TD Tundra for those needing the capacity and a 1/2 ton turbo V6 (and V6 hybrid) for those just needing a light duty truck.

When you start breaking down what people need vs what they want, it becomes a silly exercise with no real end. But a couple practical observations:

1.)Don't get me wrong, I love Canada, but the entire country has about the same number of registered vehicles as the state of Georgia. No manufacturer is thinking about the fuel costs in Canada when they design vehicles.

2.)Try merging or changing lanes on to 285 in ATL, and then tell me 200HP would get the job done in a full size, you will end up wetting your pants.

It's funny how the course of the thread has turned. Lots of cognitive dissonance, refusal, and finally acceptance (reluctant). This is the funniest thread I've read on a car forum in a long time.

    Again opinion of a person.
Most roads / paths in those countries can't handle large vehicles.
If you see the well to do people there, they have larger American vehicles as they can afford the cost of acquisition.
Mercedes trucks are seen all over the place there and some very large ones also.
I for one would like to see a pole developed that showed just what type of hauler vehicle(s) people would want to own.

All Toyota had to do for the 4th Gen was add a factory supercharger, locking rear, transmission cooler, bigger brakes, and a 35" tire option. It could get 8mpg and they would still never be able to meet demand.

Aren't you guys glad he's obviously a truck guy? You're all worried about the next gen not being what you want. What if the next gen after that is designed by some accountant named Karen instead of by Mike?

I’m not worried about the next Gen. I’m not against the new engine or anything else. But if Karen doesn’t up the payload, I’ll have to get a different brand next time. Nothing against Toyota, I just want a truck bed camper for retirement.

I’m not worried at all, I just like playing on the hype :D

We’re gonna get what we get at the end of the day. Sweers got sandbagged for putting drum breaks in the back of the 3rd gen Tacoma, but he did it for a reason. Even after hearing the reason (which made sense) he was still a pariah. Can’t please everyone no matter how hard you try!

I consider the Tacoma to be a really unremarkable truck (despite sales figures) and the Tundra has been mostly unchanged for 14 years. At quick glance it sounds like guys on here generally like and trust the Tundra head engineer. I know zero about the guy so my serious question is, what is there to be positive about or look forward to? Do people with any in depth/insider knowledge have faith in his ability to bring about the 4th Gen? Not trying to be a dick, just seeing what the consensus is.

So they would still operate if caked with sand or mud while off-roading. It really helps the crawl control do it’s thing when the back axle is buried.

So really, the ones complaining are the ones who aren't going to use the truck as it's intended.

Like the people who complain about bed bounce in the Tundra... :crapstorm:

Okay but literally no other Toyota with crawl control (that I'm aware of) has drums in the rear. I'm sure there's some valid reason for why the Tacoma has drums and the 4Runner/Land Cruiser/GX/FJC doesn't, but I have yet to hear anything convincing.

    Yep :D

I’m one of the ones that are bummed the new gen is (allegedly) ditching the V8 because I do tow and haul fairly regularly. Will the TTV6 handle what I do? Probably. But the whole time I will be wondering in the back of my mind what I’ll do if it can’t.

That’s a really good point and idk if Mike has addressed that outright yet. Do the 4runners and gxs have lockers standard and maybe that’s the difference?

I don't own any of them so just know what I've read, but I know the locker has been an option on all the 5th gens in the TRD Offroad package and TRD Pro, both of which I THOUGHT had crawl control too. Land Cruiser (maybe GX?) I thought had crawl control and no locker option, but I know less about them than 5th gens. Either way, always thought it was weird the Taco had drums and somehow there was a reason that justified them enough to go over discs but I don't know of any other Toyotas since like 2003 that have had drums. But, I don't own a Taco either so don't care and just making observations :D

I'm really just guessing here. But crawl control was introduced in 2008. Something like mud and sand caked in the brakes isn't going to show as an issue immediately. The 200 series and fj are already out and the 4th gen 4runner I'm sure by then was already in development with disc in the rear. The only full redesign with enough time to see a benefit to drums over disc was the Tacoma. It'd be received horribly to do a face-lift like the did on the 4 runner and 200 and drop the disc brakes

The TTV6 will handle it just fine, it'll just suck back the fuel and not provide as good of engine braking. In my experience a TTV6 won't be an improvement over the 5.7 loaded up at all or at higher speeds. A TTV6 Toyota hybrid - well that's the huge question that I want to see answered so badly. Can the hybrid overcome the TTV6 shortcomings or will it just be a mall crawling specialist?

Hell if I know, but since the “locker” is brake actuated, I can see where logica might say “make sure the brakes work in unfavorable conditions”, like mud or sand. There’s a video somewhere of mike sweers demonstrating crawl control on a third gen taco and that’s where he addresses the drum brake question.
