A 5.7 hybrid would be nothing short of magical...

    A bunch
GM tried something similar, but screwed up in one thing - the V8 was crap and they expected the hybrid to make up for it, not be a boost. Ford has basically duplicated what GM did, but they were smart enough to pair it with a strong engine to begin with.

Would a small boost like that get me to buy it, not likely, but if they put a crazy hybrid on it that gives a 150 HP boost then I think the thing would sell like hotcakes. Imagine a V8 hybrid with 500+ HP and 550+ lb ft that could do errands around town electric only.

If that's true, it's only because the other manufacturers lie about their trucks' capability. No one else makes a 1500 with a 4.30 rear end or that weighs 6000 lbs (which are both bad for fuel economy but good for towing heavy loads).

I am then in the small percentage of owners who rarely sees a highway. Reno is a small town, and everything can be achieved without a highway for the most part, and faster. In my 16k miles on the truck, maybe 1k have been on the highway total.

    I get 12.6 mpg average.

I doubt a hybrid is coming out anytime soon. Not really Toyota's MO to release two power plants at once anymore. Think of the Rav4. They went basic engine, hybrid, and then prime over the course of a few years.

If the next gen is a fully boxed frame (which is likely from the 5-link rear suspension shots) and has a hybrid drive, I bet our big 5.7L v8 will be gone. How else would they get vehicle weight down enough to increase payload? With that v8, turbos, a hybrid, and a fully boxed frame, they would need to do more than go to aluminum body panels.

Almost every Toyota model has a Hybrid variation, With a few models exclusively hybrid. Toyota has stated their path forward is hybrid. I believe this is where they change the game and make their trucks\SUV that are not hybrid now to having a hybrid option on new generations.

I know, but I don't think Toyota is going to release their hybrid variant at the same time as the TTV6. They don't pull Ford's.

I think the front and rear axle ratings at 4,000 and 4,150, respectively are still at the top of the half ton list. So maybe just add bigger brakes, coil suspension, but most importantly change the sticker. It's not like "Payload" is an actual measurement;).

You know what, I'm going to say it...I hope they push it to 2023 so they can have a big unveiling at an auto-show. The next Tundra deserves to be center stage in front of a crowd. Who's with me? Rex, you got my back? Everyone else can come at me! :crapstorm:

Im 50/50 on whether they will have a hybrid option.....Im leaning toward they will just to be the game changer. They have been in the hybrid business for over 20 years way longer than Ford.

The rumors early on were TTV6 at launch, 6 months later for the hybrid. Works nice so the rest of the truck will have 6 months of buyers on it before I even get to test drive so will have some idea if there's any big issues.

My best friend works sales for the busiest Toyota dealer in Arizona.

    Our convo;

Me: Let me know when you guys are getting in the new Tundra. I might want one.
Him: Alright. Those ain't coming out until the end of the year.
Me: Yeah I know, it's cool. Just let me know when you get them. I want to be in line.
Him: You know it's going to be a 6 banger right?
    Me: Yeah I've heard. 100% going to be a V6? No V8?
Him: Yup. 6 cylinder. Not V8.

There is a guy on Tacomaworld who seems pretty knowledgeable about the auto industry. He has mentioned multiple times that the Tundra has been delayed to Q1 2022. Take that for what it’s worth.

As they get more rare, the price will only go up! Once production officially halts, the price goes to $100,000! From there, TO THE MOON!! :rocket:

Hardly a surprise. Originally was slated for Q4, and late in that as well, 2021 so even being pushed back a month with the supplier delays they're all dealing with would have it right at the end of December - and a Christmas on sale date just doesn't make sense to me. So mid to late January makes a lot of sense with what's been out there

This makes a lot of sense. Ford and GM are currently building incomplete trucks at the moment due to the chip shortage.

Toyota needs to re think this engine thing out one more time.
Fossil fuels are here for another 24 years min.
Having their 5.7 variant in forced induction model would be readily accepted by the truck masses.
Having a Diesel / Electric hybrid would be earth shaking and put them on top of the truck heap for years.
Pure Electric trucks for hauling purposes would not be practical for fleet as well as personal usages.

im sure Toyota has enough people on their payroll to run all the numbers and make the most profitable decisions based on rules, regulations, and market direction.

I think a lot of people overlook this point. Toyota is in the business of making money, full stop. The way they do that (i.e. their value proposition to the customer) is primarily based on reliability. (And they have other aspects as well, such as lean manufacturing and such.) But this change, frankly, has nothing to do with our individual trucks and everything to do with their bottom line - AS DOES EVERY OTHER DECISION THE CORPORATION MAKES.

They ran the numbers and determined it was cost effective to remove the cooler. So they did.

Personally, I'd prefer they kept installing the external cooler as they did years prior and just raise the sticker price by the $500 or so dollars. Win win. Buyers keep peace of mind, Toyota boosts profits.

Does it concern me at the moment? No, because we currently don't tow with it. But it does give me pause as to considering a travel trailer in the future. It's an annoyance that I should have to crack open an unmolested truck to add parts they used to provide from factory for this very purpose.

One would hope so but, I've seen many times where automakers screw the pooch due to internal politics then all of a sudden BOOM it happens.
    Late but there.

I drive about 10k miles per year. So far I have averaged 16.5 miles for every gallon I have pumped into the tank. That is 606 gallons a year. Let's assume the 2022 can get 25 mpg with my same driving habits. That would be 400 gallons per year, saving me 206 gallons per year. If gas was to spike to $4.85 per gallon, that would be $1000 per year in fuel savings. Given the new 2022 would probably cost me $25k in addition to my trade, it would take 25 years to "break even" if I don't consider the lost opportunity of investing that $25k in an appreciating asset, and the likelihood of higher insurance and repairs. From a MPG perspective, it makes absolutely no financial sense to trade up for me, just as it made no sense for me to buy a Ford, Chevy or Dodge.
