Viktor, I see you in Calgary, I saw Harrops recommend 93AKI, I can't find octane 93/94 here anymore and it's all 91, I wonder how much that affects performance and reliability.

If you plan on increasing performance in the long run I think the Harrop has more top end potential. Base install I think both give very similar or close performance. You also have Whipple as an option; it is slightly larger than Harrop.

 

Give Keith Carty of Dirty Deeds Industries a call at 760-877-4234. He is a guru at all things Tundra and especially Supercharges. He runs one in his '13 Tundra and is always getting orders for them for customers. If there is something to be known about a supercharger, Keith is your guy!!!

 

Yeah I did watch the video which made me like the harrop again. I have talked it over with Keith before and his recommendations would be the Mangnuson since they would both make the same amount of power if I stay the same psi and is cheaper cost. Local Toyota dealership can install for 8200 but if I decide to go harrop I may have to drive to Arizona for SDHQ installation. Not sure of cost for install but it would be at least a couple thousand more most likely.

 

The Harrop S/C is about $1K more total depending on your market, install is about the same. Up to you if it is worth the extra cost, especially if you are staying at a base install. The Harrop has a stage 2 offering that requires a tune (which is available for you year truck), adding this will increase the cost of the total install.

 

Curious why your local dealer won't install harrop? Mine says they will.

 

I guess I haven’t asked yet but good point. Long Beach Toyota seems to do a lot of supercharger installs. I was going by the recommended installers referred by harrop. Only one up in the Bay Area and Arizona were closest for some reason none in SoCal.

 

I emailed harrop and asked about your Octane question. They say they haven’t seen any differences between 91 and 93 and assured that 91 would be sufficient.

 

I asked my dealership, they said it looks just like the magnuson charger in terms on install so they don't see any difference on time it takes.

What would the difficulty scale of putting a supercharger in by yourself be? I say I am pretty handy and have done all the mods myself so far but nothing with engine stuff before.

 

PetroCanada and Husky carry 94 octane here in Alberta. At stock boost levels you should be fine with 91.

 

With stock supplied pulleys they are very close in performance. The Harrop costs a little more, but is more efficient and will run cooler. If you are never going to modify the truck past stock supercharger setup, either one will be just fine. If you are planning to increase power in the future, go with a Harrop.

 

I’ve noticed that too. Wonder why that is?

 

It is around a 12-14 hour job to install the blower system on a Tundra. It is not exceptionally difficult if you have the tools.

Never done a Tundra SC, but I figure it'll be much like typical s/c kit, take your time, lots of little steps and lots of patience.

You can do it easily, the supercharger itself is the easy part, most of the effort is swapping bits out. The Magnuson manual is very thorough, took me an easy day and a half and I was piecing together used components from a box and had never touched a boosted vehicle prior.

 

Were there Any special tools that made the installation easier? I was looking at house clamp clamp pliers at the minimum.

Not really, on the Magnuson there's some 12mm nuts that the supercharger body overhangs and are a royal bitch to reach. The best way (after my 3rd time installing/taking off) I've found is to get a small 12mm (like for a 1/4" drive, though maybe I used a 3/8" drive socket) and then grind down the end of it until it's as low as possible while still fully engaging the nut. Then you can barely tighten the nut while using a U joint and extension. The first two times I used a 12mm open end and then bent the handle at like 45deg and then you could barely do like a 1/8 turn on the nut (a ratcheting open end won't fit radially, and a normal size socket you can't get a drive on without shortening). Literally everything else was just basic wrenching and really straight forward.

 

The most important "specialty" tool I would say is necessary for installation of a Magnuson supercharger is a 12 mm shallow 1/4" drive swivel socket. Otherwise, a decent mechanics tool set + torque wrench + air compressor + vacuum should be all you need to do the install. Other nice to haves would be things like long reach needle nose pliers, a jack (and better, a cross member) to help with dropping the tank, and a lift.

I would very highly caution against attempting the install by yourself unless you either have a lot of time on your hands or are very mechanically versed. I've taken apart/put together many motorcycle engines completely (2 and 4 stroke), and still knew that the installation of this kit is not for the light hearted.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RWDX49R) that fits on 6 of the supercharger bolts perfectly, the last 2 (front nuts) can be done with either a crows foot or a long 12mm socket.

Also super important to use a magnet to place the bolts into place, you really don't want to lose one of those bolts into the V otherwise you're pulling the supercharger back off.

I didn't install the new airbox until after I had put the actual supercharger on the engine. The missing air box provides lots of room. At a minimum, you want 2 people to help heave the supercharger into place, the thing weighs like 75 lbs. An engine hoist with the correct bracket would actually be the best way to get it on, if I were to pull it off again/reinstall it I'd literally buy an engine hoist just so I don't have to deal with the heavy ass supercharger.

For what it's worth, I replaced the intake manifold gaskets (17171-0S030 x2) and fuel injector seals (23291-23010 x8) while performing the install. I used genuine Toyota FIPG (00295-00103) for the coolant crossover RTV.

The green PCV valve uses the Magnuson-provided (but OEM) vent hose (12261-38020), NOT the original vent hose that was on the engine/original manifold. I should have known better, knowing full well that the vacuum ports are a heck of a lot smaller than the original manifold fitting. Luckily for me, I could pull the old one off/put the new one on without having to yank the supercharger off. (other than inconvenience).

Make sure that you purchase Toyota Pink coolant. Red is NOT pink that is concentrated, regardless of what the guy at the parts counter tells you. I luckily caught this before I installed the supercharger and was able to swap the red I purchased out for pink.

If you mess up your intercooler hoses for any reason, know that they are all Gates 3/4" EPDM heater hose. The instructions refer to a 4" x 60" 90 degree hose, but the most recent kits are coming with precut hoses. The part number of the hose that used to come with the kit is Gates 28479. If you're looking for a replacement 90 degree fitting, Gates 28475 is a 4x12 90 degree 3/4" EPDM hose.

The heat shrink clamps they come with are Gates 32929 and the hose menders are Gates 28605.
